Olympus and Pentax have introduced cameras with sensor-shift-driven resolution modes designed to maximize the amount of information collected by their sensors. Ricoh has just launched the Pentax K-3 II semi-pro DSLR with an improved image stabilization system that drives a new Pixel Shift Resolution feature. Retaining its predecessor’s 24MP sensor, 27-point AF system, and durable construction, the K-3 II now offers sensor-shift IS with a claimed 4.5 stops of shake reduction. Read more

Canon has introduced two new DSLRs at the top end of its entry-level tier, the EOS Rebel T6s/760D and Rebel T6i/750D. They both provide 24.2MP APS-C sensor and built-in Wi-Fi with NFC (firsts for the Rebel series), while the T6s assumes the flagship role with a top panel LCD, quick control dial, horizontal level guide and additional manual controls in video mode. Canon has officially unveiled the EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R, both of which offer a 50.6MP full-frame sensor inside virtually the same body as the EOS 5D Mark III. The effect of the EOS 5DS R’s low pass filter has been cancelled out, but aside from that difference the two cameras are identical. Like the EOS 5D III the new cameras offer 1080/30p video but do not feature headphone jacks sockets or clean HDMI out. The 5DS and 5DS R will be available from June for $ 3699 and $ 3899 respectively. Read more

Olympus has unveiled the OM-D E-M5 II. Picking up where its successor left off, the E-M5 II continues to offer weather sealing and 5-axis IS while adding a redesigned 16MP Four Thirds sensor and 5-axis image stabilization. The E-M5 II also boasts a 40MP high resolution shot mode, achieved by shifting the sensor in half-pixel steps and capturing eight images over a period of one second. Read more

We’ve seen a few interesting panoramic camera projects over the past few months but none of them capture panoramic video. Centr, which was launched by former Apple engineers and currently in the Kickstarter stage, is aiming to fill this gap. Filming fire has come a long way since the 1991 movie Backdraft. Emerging Director Brendan Bellomo and DP Greg Wilson shot a slow motion short using the Phantom Flex4K camera, which shoots 1,000 FPS at full 4K resolution. The results are riveting. See video

Frustrated by size limitations when uploading images to Google+, photographer Trey Ratcliff discovered a way to get around the limitations, and upload original full-resolution photos. In a blog post, he has put together a step-by-step guide on how to do it, which involves using Google Drive – Google’s cloud storage service – and sharing images directly from there to Google+. Dozens of two-dimentional aerial photo calibration targets are scattered all across the United States, according to a report by the Center for Land Use Interpretation. Constructed mostly during the 1950s and 1960s, these large outdoor charts were used as ‘a platform to test, calibrate, and focus aerial cameras traveling at different speeds and altitudes.’ The report points out that although some of these ‘charts’ are still used for some optical camera testing and calibration, they are primarily relics of the past.
