Kipon releases two Mamiya 645 to Sony E mount adapters with electronic aperture control

29 Oct

Photography accessory manufacturer Kipon is now shipping two new adapters for mounting medium format lenses to Sony E mount camera systems.

The adapters come in two varieties: the M645-S/E E, which adapts Mamiya brand Mamiya 645 mount lenses to Sony E mount cameras while the M645-S/E ES adapters Phase One or Schneider brand Mamiya 645 lenses to Sony E mount cameras.

The two adapters are constructed of aluminum and brass, offer an infinity focus feature, and offer electronic aperture control through the camera. A previous Mamiya 645 to Sony E mount adapter has been available for some time, but it doesn’t offer the electronic contacts for aperture control and features a less pleasing design.

The M645-S/E E and M645-S/E ES are available to purchase for $ 289 and $ 389, respectively. Shipping dates vary depending on your geographical location.

Instagram releases its ‘Restrict’ shadowbanning feature for all users

05 Oct

Instagram has fully released the ‘Restrict’ shadowban feature it first introduced as a test in July. The tool enables an Instagram user to restrict other accounts from posting content on and sending messages to their own account. As Instagram first explained this summer, Restrict is intended to limit the reach of bullies without fully blocking them, an action that may make the bullying worse.

The philosophy behind shadowbans on Instagram is simple: many users, particularly teens, face bullying from peers they know in real life, such as classmates. Blocking a bully on Instagram may cause that bully to increase their torment of the user in real life, which is why many users avoid blocking them.

In addition, and more broadly speaking, blocking an account that is posting abusive content may simply drive the bully to create a new account after the first one is blocked. For these reasons, blocking is not always the ideal way to prevent problematic comments and messages from being directed at an account.

Restrict is a solid alternative, enabling Instagram users to instead limit an unwanted account in a way that doesn’t alert the bully. Comments published by a restricted account are hidden by default and any private messages sent from the restricted account will be automatically sent to the recipient’s Message Request inbox. These restricted DMs can be read, but the sender won’t be alerted to the fact that their message was viewed.

Restrict is now available to all Instagram users.

Exposure Software releases Exposure X5 image editing and organizing software

02 Oct

Exposure Software (formerly Alien Skin) has released its new flagship product, the image editing and organizing software Exposure X5. The new package comes with long list of improvements over the last version Exposure X4.5 which includes the following:

  • 3D Color Masking allows you to control where an image adjustment is applied by color characteristics such as hue, saturation, and luminance. You can select foreground or background areas, skies, skin tones or specific color ranges using the tool.
  • Chromatic Aberration Correction removes color fringes caused by lens refraction. Corrections can be applied by selecting a lens profile or manually for more precise control. Apply via lens profile or by manual adjustment if precise control is desired.
  • Vignette Correction does what it says on the tin and lifts the brightness around the edges of your images to counteract vignetting effects. Like the CA correction, this can be applied using a lens profile or manually.
  • Custom Camera Profiles let you control the JPG color rendering from RAW data for a particular camera. Camera profiles created by X-Rite or other software can be automatically applied by matching a camera model or serial number. Optionally they can also be applied when matching a specific lens or a pre-defined ISO range.

Other new few features and functions include complementary color presets, additional black&white film simulation presets, new image flip options, support for gatscale TIF and JPG images as well as multiple user interface language options.

Owners of Exposure X4 who purchased their copy on or after August 1st, 2019 will be receiving a free upgrade to Exposure X5 soon. Anyone you bought any Exposure version before this date will be able to purchase an update version for $ 89. The full version will set you back $ 119. A 30 day trial version is available. You’ll find more information on the Exposure website.

Skydio releases sample footage captured with its upcoming Skydio 2 drone

07 Aug

Last month, California-based drone manufacturer Skydio teased a follow up to their premier R1 model. Slated for release this Fall, the company recently updated email subscribers with more details about what they’re calling the ‘Skydio 2,’ presumably for the time being. The reel, above, demonstrates some of the new drone’s capabilities including the ability to navigate and fly through numerous obstacles, track subjects, and even perform a 360° spin.

Besides being able to fly autonomously and avoid obstacles, the ‘Skydio 2’ will also boast a breakthrough algorithm that can determine ‘where and how to fly to get the most stunning cinematic shots possible.’ Perhaps this ability was referenced in the second frame as the ‘Skydio 2’ gradually pulled away from a single beachgoer to reveal a stunning tropical island.

With the R1, Skydio positioned itself as a drone maker for consumers and enthusiasts. Using Nvidia’s onboard computer, the same technology that powers self-driving cars, the R1 can map it surroundings, avoid obstacles in every direction and track a single subject. Remote pilots can launch and fly effortlessly with this built-in technology.

Now, with the ‘Skydio 2,’ the focus has shifted to quality cinematography. A redesigned camera promises polished, professional-grade video. This, alone, makes it a huge improvement from its predecessor. If they offer it up in a compact, light-weight frame with increased battery life, they’ll have created the consumer-grade drone to beat.

Think Tank Photo releases Digital Holster 150, a waist holster for super-tele zooms

28 Jun

Think Tank Photo has released the Digital Holster 150, a top-loading waist holster designed specifically for use with super telephoto zoom lenses.

Think Tank Photo says the holster was built to replace a backpack for times when you’ll only be carrying around one super telephoto zoom lens and an attached camera body. Like Think Tank Photo’s other holsters, the Digital Holster 150 is designed to be used with a belt system, such as the Pro Speed Belt V3.0 or other belt system.

The holster features an integrated seam-sealed rain cover, a front pocket that’s large enough to hold a 150mm lens filter, an internal pocket for memory cards or lens cloths and an attachment point for monopods or other modular components. There’s also an additional divider included so you can pack another smaller lens or accessory if your camera setup doesn’t require all of the internal space.

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_6315089572″,”galleryId”:”6315089572″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”isMobile”:false}) });

Think Tank Photo has provided two example setups that would fit inside the Digital Holster 150:

• Nikon D5 with 200–500mm F5.6 VR II attached
• Canon 7D Mark II with Sigma 150–600mm F5–6.3 Sport attached

The Digital Lens Holster 150 is available to purchase from Think Tank Photo for $ 109.75.

Sandmarc releases anamorphic lens for the iPhone

21 Jun

Apple’s iPhone models and other high-end smartphones are increasingly regarded as serious tools for film-making, generating a market for movie-centric smartphone camera accessories. Last year premium lens makers Moment launched an anamorphic lens for smartphones, now rivals Sandmarc follow suit.

The Sandmarc anamorphic lens for iPhones comes with a multi-element design, multi-coating and anti-reflective glass. It uses an aluminum body and can be attached to most recent iPhone models via a dedicated case or a lens clip.

The company says the lens has been designed to create the same kind of image flare you see in movies and, like other anamorphic lenses, captures more horizontal information by squeezing the image.

The end result is a cinematic look with ultra-wide aspect ratio and black bars at top and bottom. The lens is available for the iPhone 7/7Plus and later on the Sandmarc website. The package will set you back $ 160 and comes with the lens clip and a dedicated case for your iPhone.
