All That Glitters – Milky Way Above Yosemite Forest

If inspiration is what you’re looking for then the following 326 “Best Photos of 2013″ entries should keep you busy for sometime. As with years past Best of Photos project entries there is some amazing new talent to discover. I continue to be amazed that this blog project attracts so many talented and passionate photographers. Participants spanned a spectrum of skill levels from hobbyists to professionals and covered a wide variety of genres including landscape, macro, nature, photojournalism, portraiture, event, wildlife, fine art photography and more. There are likely many names you’ll recognize below, some famous, and many others you won’t. I highly recommend visiting each entry as I have.

My only regret now that this blog project has grown so popular is that I didn’t ask participants to categorize their entry along a specific genre of photography. I started to do this manually last night, but decided against completing it myself as I’d end up with 300+ angry photographers who felt their work was miscategorized. Next year I’ll revise the format to accommodate this.

If you’d like to take part next year and be informed when submissions open for the “Best Photos of 2014″ blog project add your name to my mail list. You won’t be spammed. I send out newsletters quite infrequently.

Thank to everyone who took part! I hope reviewing your best photos of the year and comparing them to years pasts keeps you inspired and aware of your progress as a photographer.

The 10 Most Popular Compact System Camera Systems among Our Readers

18 Dec

Over the last few weeks we’ve featured lists of the most popular DSLRs, DSLR Lenses and Camera Bags among our readers. Today we’re turning our attention to compact camera systems.

This last 3 months has seen a bit of a surge in purchases of and interest in this class of camera as an increasing number of our readers seem to be looking for smaller cameras that still have interchangeable lens options. Particularly of interest is Sony’s release of the full farm A7 and A7R cameras which have only been available for a short while but which already feature in our best seller list.

With manufacturers like Sony, Olympus, Fujifilm and Panasonic continuing to develop and improve their offerings in this class I suspect we’ll see it continue to grow.

Here are the the 10 most popular compact camera systems among our readers (we’ve kept it to those with interchangeable lenses) bought in the last 3 months (ranked in order of what our readers bought at Amazon in the last few months*).

*Note: these lists were compiled from reports supplied to us from Amazon.com where we are affiliates. One of the ways dPS is able to cover its costs and be a sustainable business is that we earn a small commission when readers make a purchase from Amazon after clicking on our links (including those above). While no personal details are passed on we do get an overall report from Amazon about what was bought and are able to create this list.

9% of dPS Readers Have Owned More than 10 Digital Cameras

10 Jul

Last month 14,002 readers responded to the question in our monthly poll which asked how many digital cameras they had owned.

The results are in!

Screen Shot 2013 07 02 at 9 34 03 PM

It seems there was a fairly even spread among readers who have owned between 1-5 digital cameras – with 10-20% of respondents in each category.

The interesting category to me was the 10+ category with just under 9% of our readers having owned more than 10 cameras! The comments that accompanied the original poll post showed that many of those who voted in this category reported having had significantly more than 10 too! It looks like we’ve got some enthusiasts in our midst! :-)

Readers Shoot Back: Sergey Zaytsev

03 Jul

I sometimes kill an afternoon scanning the excellent work that Strobist readers upload to the site's Flickr group. Every now and then one will really stop you in your tracks, as did Georgian photographer Sergey Zaytsev's homage to his country's Queen Tamar, seen above. Very cool that it was done with more creativity than dollars (or lari, I should say?) and with a strong historical inspiration, to boot.

Would it surprise you to find this was done with a Nikon D300s and a few bare Cactus KF36 Vivitar 285 knockoffs? 'Cause that's what he used.

77% of dPS Readers Take A Camera Everywhere [POLL Results]

18 Jun

Last month we asked readers whether they took their camera with them everywhere in a poll. The results are in!

Screen Shot 2013 06 17 at 12 47 40 PM

If you include the camera in your phone… 77% of the almost 20,000 people who responded take a camera with them everywhere.

What I find interesting is that we ran this exact same poll in January 2009 so we can track how things have changed over the last 4 years among our readers. Here are the 2009 results (the results were from around 18,000 readers at that time).

Screen Shot 2013 06 17 at 12 47 22 PM

While the changes have only been subtle there are a few interesting observations to make.

Firstly – more people are relying upon the cameras in their phones to capture their everyday events. This is no wonder – back in 2009 the iPhone had been out for a couple of years but since then the camera in iPhone (and other phones) have improved significantly (in fact a segment of our readership ONLY use camera phones).

Secondly the rise in camera phone use has come at the expense of compact camera solutions and those who only took cameras on special occasions.

What surprised me most was the slight rise in those taking DSLRS everywhere because there’s been such a push of late from camera manufacturers to improve their offerings in the compact camera space.

How have your camera usage habits chanced in the last 4 years?
