Readers Shoot Back: Vivian Chung

13 May

Dontcha hate it when your bride-and-groom portrait gets photo-bombed?

Okay, maybe not if it's by a Beluga whale. And for Vancouver wedding photographer (and Strobist reader) Vivian Chung, this well-planned cameo was no accident.

Complicating things, she only had a little time—and a key technical restriction—to make this shot.

How Many dPS Readers Have Had Photography Training? POLL RESULTS

07 May

Last week on dPS our reader poll asked readers if they’d ever done any kind of photography training (a class or course). The results from over 66,000 readers are in and interestingly over 60% of us have never done any formal training (whether it be online or offline).

Photography courses

Those of you who have done some training – what was it and how did you find it?

Those of you who have never done any training – where did you learn? Was it just through practice, magazines, websites, friends, books… or something else?

Best Photos of 2012 by JMG-Galleries Blog Readers

10 Jan

This year the Best Photos of 2012 blog project hit a new milestone with 300 entries, topping the results for best photos of 2011, best photos of 2010,  best photos of 2009, best photos of 2008 and best photos of 2007! Participants spanned a spectrum of skill levels from hobbyists to professionals and covered a wide variety of genres including landscape, macro, nature, photojournalism, portraiture, event, wildlife, fine art photography and more. There are likely many names you’ll recognize below, some famous, and many others you won’t. I highly recommend visiting each entry as I have. Even after 6 years of running this blog project I’m blown away by the talent of those that take part. It is truly inspirational to see so much creativity and beauty. If your curious to see photos I personally enjoyed look out for the entries with *** next to them.

Over the last couple of weeks we’ve highlighted the best selling DSLRs and best selling DSLR Lenses among our readers.

Today we’re moving onto best selling* ‘point and shoot‘ cameras. So if it is a camera and it doesn’t have an interchangeable lens it’s here.

Here’s the list!

*Note: these lists were compiled from reports supplied to us from Amazon.com where we are affiliates. One of the ways dPS is able to cover its costs and be a sustainable business is that we earn a small commission when readers make a purchase from Amazon after clicking on our links (including those above). While no personal details are passed on we do get an overall report from Amazon about what was bought and are able to create this list.

Other Brands

Normally we don’t see a lot of lenses from other brands purchased but in the last 4 months we’ve noticed a spike in sales of lenses from Signma, Tamron and Tokina who each make quality lenses for DSLRS of different brands – many times at more affordable prices than the equivalent lenses from the main brands. Here’s the ones that we saw decent sales of:

1. Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras (also available for Nikon, Samsung and Sigma DSLRS)

The 15 Most Popular DSLRS Among Our Readers

02 Dec

Every few months we like to report back to the dPS community which cameras (and other gear) are most popular with our readers. Today we’re going to take a look at the highest selling DSLRs among our readers over the last 4 months (as ranked by the reports that Amazon gives us*).

As usual you’ll see it is largely a battle between Canon and Nikon (who dominate this class of camera) and that at the top of the list we see entry level DSLRS most popular (mainly due to their price). Further down the list we see more serious (and expensive) contenders.

Note: Amazon currently have some great specials at the moment on cameras and gear as part of their Holiday Promotions.

Reader’s concept prompts question: what would your ideal camera be?

20 Oct

Enthusiast.png

What does your dream camera look like? One of our more enterprising readers has sketched-out what his would look like – creating an interesting contemporary rangefinder concept. Bristling with Nikon F4-inspired manual controls, each dial and switch also has a ‘neutral’ position to allow the on-screen interface settings to take precedence. Easycass acknowledges the concept may not be entirely possible – an ‘ultra-fast’ 24-105mm lens would dictate a fairly small sensor, and autofocus rangefinders have never exactly been commonplace – but it raises questions the question: ‘What would your perfect camera be?’
