LaCie unveils DJI Copilot 2TB portable hard drive with built-in display

Seagate has just announced the LaCie DJI Copilot, a portable hard drive for photographers and videographers who use camera drones. The device features a 2TB drive, as well as an integrated screen for viewing the drive’s available capacity, the status of any data transfers that are underway, and how much power remains on the device’s built-in battery.

The company describes the new LaCie drive as a full backup on-set solution (BOSS) that enables drone users to review their footage without carrying around a laptop. This is achieved via the Copilot BOSS companion app for smartphones and tablets, which supports full-resolution playback on mobile devices and enables users to organize and manage their content on-the-go.

The LaCie DJI Copilot also functions as a power bank for charging USB devices, such as a smartphone or action camera.

According to Seagate, the 2TB capacity is ample enough to store up to 65 hours of 4K/30fps footage and 20,000 or more raw images. Users can directly copy data from USB storage devices (including USB-C), cameras, SD cards, and drones to the drive. Other features include durable construction that is resistant to dust, splashes, and drops, an included 3 year ‘Rescue Data Recovery’ plan, and a 1-month Adobe Creative Cloud All Apps subscription.

WD launches two new portable SSDs designed for photographers and drone users

In addition to revealing the world’s smallest 1TB USB-C flash drive, Western Digital has launched two new portable SSDs specifically designed for “avid photographers and drone enthusiasts” at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

The SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD offers both high performance and durability in an extremely portable package, while the My Passport Wireless SSD gives photographers a solid state version of WD’s popular My Wireless Pro, which features built-in WiFi, an SD card slot, and other convenient features for photographers on-the-go.

SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD

The SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD is a lightweight (79g / .17lbs) pocket-sized USB-C drive encased in a durable housing with an IP55 dust- and water-resistant rating. Thanks to the housing, the drive can withstand operating temperatures ranging from 0°C to 45°C (32°F to 113°F), as well as storage temperatures ranging from -20°C to 70°C (-4°F to 158°F).

The Extreme Portable SSD drive has a USB 3.1 Gen 2 interface, read speeds up to 550MB/s, and out-of-the-box compatibility with Windows and macOS.

The drives are currently listed on SanDisk’s website as “not in stock” at the following capacities and price points: 250GB for $ 100, 500GB for $ 170, 1TB for $ 350, and 2TB for $ 700.

WD My Passport Wireless SSD

The My Passport Wireless SSD, as the name suggests, is a solid state version/update to the original My Passport Wireless Pro that we reviewed and actually quite liked.

Housed in an enclosure with an integrated 802.11ac wireless connection, this drive allows users to access content on the drive over WiFi, including streaming 4K videos to a computer or mobile device. The wireless feature works with the My Cloud mobile app, as well as some third-party apps including LumaFusion and FiLMiC Pro.

In addition to wireless access, this My Passport product also has an integrated SD card reader so that photos and videos can be copied onto the SSD directly from the media card at speeds up to 65MB/s. For other types of media cards, the Wireless SSD supports direct transfers via a cable and connected media card adapter. Finally, the drive also features a USB port for transferring content to a computer via USB 3.0 at speeds up to 390MB/s.

Because this model has built-in wireless, Western Digital has packed a 6700mAh battery into the drive case, enabling the WiFi feature to be used for up to 10 hours before it needs to be recharged. And for convenience’ sake, the device’s built-in battery doubles as a power bank for charging other USB devices, such as a smartphone.

The My Passport Wireless SSD will be available in 250GB ($ 230), 500GB ($ 300), 1TB ($ 500), and 2TB ($ 800) capacities. Pre-orders are available now, with shipping estimated to start on February 15th.

High Sight launches the Mini portable cable camera system

Manufacturer of cable camera systems High Sight has unveiled the latest addition to its product lineup. The Mini System was designed with portability and ease of use in mind, but builds on High Sight’s experience building larger and more complex products. The unit is controlled via a button interface and can carry gimbals, such as the DJI Osmo, Gopro Karma Grip and similar models.

“The High Sight Mini has been a blast to create and will be a game changer.” said Kevin Brower, president and chief executive officer of High Sight. “The Mini has evolved into something more than we could’ve hoped for. With our ping pong mode, you can set it up and walk away, it’s like having an extra cameraman on set just continually getting great footage.”

The Mini uses speed and position sensing for smooth movement and has been developed to be be fully autonomous. According to High Sight, this means the operator can focus on camera control, allowing for single user operation when normally two users would be required.

The Mini is made from machined aluminum and weighs only 1.3 lbs (0.6 kg). It can carry a payload of 3.3 lbs (1.5 kg) and easily fits into a backpack.

Freefly unveils Movi iPhone stabilizer: A ‘portable, adaptable, and intuitive cinema robot’

Freefly has unveiled their new Movi, a handheld gimbal stabilizer designed specifically for the iPhone. The stabilizer—which is lightweight at just 600 grams, and powered by a li-ion battery—offers half a dozen shooting modes: Orbit, Echo, Majestic, Timelapse, Smartpod, and “Movilapse.” The combination of these features and more make Movi “the world’s most portable, adaptable, and intuitive cinema robot,” according to Freefly.

Movi features the same stabilization tech used in Freefly’s professional stabilization rigs—the same rigs used in the production of major Hollywood movies like Southpaw. And if its current functionality isn’t enough, Freefly plans to continue supporting the Movi with future updates that will add more capabilities.

Movi is L-shaped, with thumb controls on the top of the handle and a bracket on the other end in which the phone is placed. These are joined by USB-C and a fast-charging battery, reinforced plastic components, tilt and pan motors, mode trigger, and a physical start/stop button—all of it controlled from a companion iOS app that is used to set up shots.

Vixari is the world’s most portable tripod, but it can still handle DSLRs

A new tripod called Vixari is attempting to launch on Kickstarter, where it is billed as “the world’s most portable tripod.” Vixari has an ultra-portable foldable design that’s only a little bigger than a smartphone, but despite its ultra-compact size, Vixari is still able to handle large cameras, including DSLRs that weigh up to 2kg / 4.4lbs.

Vixari isn’t the first portable tripod, but the team behind it claims that it is the most compact. The tripod features extendable legs that fold into the unit’s body, which itself doubles as a folding case. Each of the three legs have a maximum length of 105cm / 41in, while the body has three mounting options: a slot for smartphones between 6mm and 9mm in thickness, a mount screw, and GoPro tripod mount adapter. And since it can be used to trigger smartphones, it includes a Bluetooth remote shutter that supports Android and iOS.

The tripod body is made from polycarbonate, while the legs are made from aluminum alloy, the combination of which makes it durable and lightweight. The tripod will be offered in black, white, and dark blue colors, assuming it successfully makes it to market. Overall, Vixari measures 19cm x 6.5cm x 3.4cm / 7.4in x 2.5in x 1.33in and weighs 600g / 1.32lbs.

Kickstarter backers are offered the tripod, plus mount screw, mount adapter, remote shutter, and charging cable for pledges of at least £49 / $ 65. Shipping to these early bird backers is expected to start in February 2018.

Review and Field Test of G-Technology G-Drive ev ATC Portable Hard Drives

As photographers, keeping our data safe is of the utmost importance. Being able to trust your hard drives to work and survive all types of conditions and hardships is something to consider. As a wildlife photographer, I often find myself out in the elements, and when traveling, my gear has to put up with the rugged nature of travel, while still being ready to work when called upon. Recently I have been putting the G-Technology G-Drive ev ATC hard drives through their paces and I think these might just be one of the best rugged and solid ways to keep data safe on the move.

The ATC is part of the G-technology ev series, a set of drives offering a simple workflow from the field to the studio. The ATC builds upon the standard RaW and ev drives by adding a polycarbonate protective shell to the main drive offering protection from bumps, dust, sand and even full submergence in water to keep your drive and data safe.

The case itself is solid – the simple blue and black design that is stylish and bright enough to easily find in dark conditions. The polycarbonate shell feels very solid in the hand and fits the drive like a glove. It seals closed with a latch system that might seem flimsy, but offers a solid click and seal to ensure the drive is closed off from the elements.

The G-Drive ev ATC comes in two varieties, offering Thunderbolt or USB-3 connections for your chosen device. The cords are built into the case itself so you don’t need to worry about forgetting them, a really well thought out design. Of course, the case adds an extra amount of bulk to the setup that might be a problem for those photographers wanting to keep things as small as possible, but personally, I think the extra size is a worthy trade off for the added protection.

Testing the drives during travel

Testing the drives out, they have accompanied me on a few international trips, coming as my primary and backup drives for work in the Falklands, Canada, and Finland. On each trip I have worked with two drives, keeping one as a primary and the other as secondary backup. The fast data transfer speeds were great, 1GB of data transferred in less than a minute over USB-3 meaning backups were swift and simple.

On returning flights keeping data separate is important (in case of a lost bag) and I had no worries about packing one of these with the G-Drive ev ATC hard drives into my checked baggage, knowing the solid construction would keep it protected from any rough handling from the dreaded baggage handlers! On all of my trips, the hold drive never skipped a beat, being ready to upload as soon as I got home to my office.

The drive easily pops out and can be inserted into the G-Dock for easy file transfer back home.

In the office the workflow is simple. Popping the drives out of the housing I can easily slot them into the Ev docking station (called G-Dock) that gives me Thunderbolt speeds to upload images directly to my main drives for editing, backup and archiving. The ease of being able to just slot in one drive saves faffing around with multiple SD and CF cards again, keeping my workflow streamlined.

Extreme testing

To further test the drives I wanted to put them through the mill so I decided to rough them up with some real world testing. Grabbing one of the drives in the ATC case I took it out onto location and basically treated it like I didn’t care it was full of precious data. Dropping it onto the ground, into muddy puddles and even throwing it into my local river before rescuing it again down stream.

Each test was passed with flying colors and even after fully submerging the drive underwater with my hand for a minute, it was in perfect working order. Of course, one problem with the drive is that you do need to check that everything is latched down. Human error, not fully closing the latch or getting something stuck into the gasket could compromise the waterproofing and seal, so it’s best to always be careful. I mean I doubt too many of us regularly throw our drives in a river intentionally…

As a drive, they are built solidly, but one area that I feel would be a great improvement is the use of SSDs rather than normal disk drives. Including an SSD would just add another level to the rugged nature of the drives making them even more durable for life on the road, while also giving faster transfer speeds. This would be especially useful for those editing and working with video files on the move as well.

As a photographer, G-Drive ev ATC hard drives suit my needs very well. The large 1TB hard drive easily has enough storage for a long photo shoot on location and with the protective shell offering great durability to my drives I am sure they will be part of my workflow for many years to come.

Rotolight unveils the Neo 2: A portable LED HSS flash that doubles as a modeling light

Rotolight has announced the launch of Neo 2, an “industry first” high speed sync-capable LED flash that doubles as a continuous light source and boasts no recycle time.

The company says it designed the Neo 2 specifically for videographers and portrait photographers, and that it collaborated with Elinchrom to build its Skyport 2.4GHz HSS wireless flash receiver into the model. That Skyport receiver, in conjunction with the Rotolight HSS transmitter, enables photographers to wirelessly control up to four groups of 10 lights at ranges up to 656ft / 200m.

The Neo 2 light itself is powered by AA batteries and is capable of 85,000 full-power flashes on a single charge. This model’s shutter sync can be set at fast as 1/8000th of a second, and it offers 500% flash output.

Compared to the original model, the Neo 2 is 85% brighter when used as a continuous light, and there’s a built-in kelvin display for adjusting both flash and continuous light color temperature. Rotolight used its AccuColour LED tech with the Neo 2, the result being “perfect color rendering,” according to the company.

The Neo 2 is available now in a £250 (~$ 325 USD) bundle that includes a single light, the power supply, an accessory shoe, belt pouch, and a 4-piece filter pack. Rotolight is also offering a £1,125.00 (~$ 1,465 USD) bundle that features three lights, stands, balls heads, and a hard flight case.

Super fast, tiny Samsung T5 portable SSD hits 540MB/s, can handle raw 4K video

Samsung has introduced a new ultra-fast, teeny-tiny solid-state-drive called the Samsung Portable SSD T5. This model boasts up to a 2TB capacity alongside transfer speeds that reach up to 540MB/s, making it suitable for editing raw 4K footage and other large files. This drive is notable for its use of Samsung’s 64-layer V-NAND technology, the driving force behind the rapid transfer speeds of this lightweight, pocketable model.

Compared to the company’s own testing with an external 500GB HDD, Samsung says its T5 SSD model is nearly 5 times faster, this despite measuring in at only 3 x 2.3 x 0.4-inches / 74 x 57.3 x 10.5mm. The South Korean company has also boosted the SSD’s durability by using a shock-resistant internal frame, one capable of handling drops from heights as high as 6.6ft / 2m.

The drive features USB-C, and is shipped with two cables, one featuring a USB-C connector and another featuring a USB-A connector.

The T5 drive is offered in two finishes: Alluring Blue, which comes in 250GB and 500GB capacities, and Deep Black, which comes in 1TB and 2TB capacities. All four models feature AES 256-bit hardware encryption and are joined by a companion app that makes them compatible with Android mobile devices.

NanGuang launches three new portable LED-lights

The NanGuang CNB144 LED panel retails for £89.94 ($ 115).

Chinese accessory manufacturer NanGuang has launched three new portable LED lights that are designed for use with DSLRs and mirrorless system cameras and attach via the hotshoe. 

The CNB144 and CNLUX1600C are panel lights that come with an adjustable bracket to modify the lighting angle. Both lights offer a brightness output of 1005 LM at 100% brightness and stepless dimmer control. It’s also possible to lock several units together to create a larger light panel. 

The CNB144 weighs 225g and comes with a diffuser in the box. The color temperature is 5600K and can be altered using the included 3200K or pink filters. The CNLUX1600C comes with a bi-colour panel. Color temperature is steplessly adjustable from 3200K-5600K. The CNLUX1600C also comes with a diffuser and pink and blue filters.

The NanGuang CN8F LED fresnel light will cost you £239.94 ($ 307).

The CN8F LED Fresnel Light is designed for both on-camera or stand-alone use. It provides an illumination of 560 LM and a color temperature of 5600K. The fresnel lens can be adjusted to produce a light beam between 10 and 60 degrees. The light also offers stepless brightness control. An integrated frame holds up to three filters of 65 x 70mm size. Orange 3200k and blue 6500K filters are included in the kit, as well as a gelatine filter holder, barn doors and a carry case. The weight is 550g without batteries. 

All lights are battery powered and compatible with Sony NP-FH, NP-FM, NP-F series batteries, Panasonic CGR-D series batteries (using an included adapter plate) or Ni-HM or AA batteries. Optionally you can use an AC 100-240V power adapter. The NanGuang CNB144 price tag is £89.94 ($ 115) in the UK, the CNLUX1600C will set you back £119.94 ($ 154) and CN8F  fresnel light retails at £239.94 ($ 307).

Western Digital launches its first portable SSD

Western Digital today announced its first portable SSD, adding solid state storage technology to its My Passport line of portable storage devices. The new My Passport SSD comes with a USB Type-C port and with transfer speeds of up to 515 MB/s is WD’s fastest current My Passport model. 

The My Passport SSD is available with capacities ranging from 256GB to 1TB and its small dimensions make it very portable. It has also been drop tested from a height of 2m / 6.5ft and Western Digital claims it can withstand 1500G of force.

The Western Digital My Passport SSD comes with a USB-C to USB-C cable and a USB-A adapter in the box. It is available now from Best Buy and from other select retailers starting this quarter. The 256GB model will set you back $ 99.99, the 512GB version is $ 199.99, and for the 1TB variant $ 399.99 have to be invested. More information is available on the Western Digital website.
