This fascinating 1958 documentary titled “How film is made”, that documents the production process and birth of photographic and cinematic film, was initially uncovered as part of a heritage in the Netherlands. Although its exact source and purpose are as of yet still unknown, it may have been an instructional film for new employees at Kodak’s factories world wide, and was probably used as a promotional film for the general public as well.

Portrait Photography using continuous lighting

29 Oct

Gavin Hoey explores with the use of the smick.co.uk 3 head super softbox continuous lighting kit to take portraits. The kit is powerful and versatile, this is an alternative to studio flash for taking portraits, the main advantage is that you see what you get. The kit uses energy saving compact fluorescent daylight bulbs which means that they produce great light and not much heat compared with tungsten redhead type lighting. It can be used as video lighting as well as still photography making this a very versatile bit of kit. www.smick.co.uk

29 Oct

Ok, I had to submit a second edition and delete the first one, as several more portraits were rated and ranked within the last week. So, here is the final portrait review of 2008. It’s fitting that I should post this on New year’s eve. 2009 Promises to be even better in photography for me and I hope you’ll visit my site and see the many updates. Portraits are the focus, but of course, I shoot anything that pays the bills… thank you all for your continued interest and also to those of you who have hired me so many times through 2008.

Line of Sight Test Ep 102: Photo on the Go with Joe McNally: Adorama Photography TV

28 Oct

www.adorama.com Adorama Photography TV Presents Photo on the Go with Joe McNally. Join Joe in Hong Kong as he explains how to test the line of sight with a built-in camera flash and a SB-900 flash. Watch as he tests the strength of the built in flash to get the line of sight TTL transmission, and then uses his SB-900 as a commander in order to “talk” to the flash on his subject. It is important to use a TTL transmission when taking photographs of a subject that has a large depth of field. By using this technique, you can stack the background lighting and color in close to your subject in order to achieve the photo you need. The TTL transmission will make it easier for you to capture your subject from a distance.
