Alongside two camera announcements, Panasonic has gone public with plans for a new post-focus feature for selected cameras and two new lenses. Enabled by 4K video capture and its DFD (Depth From Defocus) technology, Post Focus will allow users to select a focus point after capture. New lenses on the way include a Leica DG 100-400mm F4-6.3 zoom and Lumix G 25mm F1.7 prime. Read more

Panasonic has unveiled the Lumix DMC-GX8 and with it some new advancements for the Micro Four Thirds format. For the first time, a MFT body offers a 20.3MP sensor. AF sees some notable improvements thanks to Depth from Defocus technology, a new Dual I.S. system uses stabilization from the lens and camera body simultaneously, and 4K video is included. Read more

According to a recent report, Panasonic is developing a technology for refocusing an image after it’s been shot, and will be commercializing the feature sometime in the next year. The technology achieves something similar to Lytro’s light field cameras but instead relies on 4K video capture. Read more

Panasonic USA has issued a statement in response to concerns on the DPReview.com forum about Lumix G7 serial numbers rubbing off. The statement aims to reassure customers, pointing out that the problem does not indicate that the cameras are not genuine and confirming that camera warranties are still valid, so long as you retain proof of purchase and the label from the camera box that states the serial number. Using a video feed to capture stills isn’t a new idea – Nikon’s first electronic camera, the QV-1000C, did it in the late 1980s – but the resolution of 4K makes it more useful.
