ExoLens offers Zeiss-branded accessory lenses for iPhone 7, adds ‘Prime’ lens line

ExoLens has announced that it will sell its Zeiss-branded accessory lenses for iPhone 7, and has also introduced a second product line. Calling its existing lineup of lenses with Zeiss optics the ‘Pro’ line, it emphasizes their high quality construction while adding the ‘Prime’ line for ‘artistic expression and non-technical social sharing.’ ExoLens does not mention support for the iPhone 7 Plus and its dual camera modules.

Three Pro lenses are offered: the Wide, Telephoto and Macro-Zooms first introduced in January. Each will come with an ExoLens Edge machined aluminum mount, as well as a key ring loop. Launching for iPhone 7, 6/6 Plus and 6s/6s Plus in December, the wide-angle and telephoto kits will also sell for $ 199.99 and $ 249.99, respectively.

Following the launch of these two kits, ExoLens will release the Pro Macro-Zoom Lens in January for $ 199.99 bundled with the lens mount bracket. This kit will include the Zeiss Vario-Proxar 40-80 T macro-zoom lens for taking photos of items that measure between 3cm and 12cm. 

The Pro macro lens kit will be joined by Telephoto 2x, Wide-Angle 0.6x, and Super Wide-Angle/Macro combo lenses in the PRIME range, all of which launch in the first quarter of 2017; prices for the Prime kits haven’t been released yet.

Palette offers physical controllers for your photo editing software

In hall 4 at Photokina we had the chance to take a closer look at Palette’s system of customizable physical controllers for software, which started out as a crowdfunding project but have been available in retail for some time now. The system consists of a core unit with a small display and a range of buttons, dials and sliders that all come with a sturdy aluminum housing and attach to each other magnetically. 

Palette can me made to work with any software but predefined setups are available for Adobe Photohop, Lightroom and other photo and video editing applications. You can switch between functions using buttons, or adjust parameters such as digital exposure compensation, contrast or hue with sliders or dials. Your personal profile can be created in the Palette app. Multiple profiles are supported for different users or workflows and the Palette application can be set to automatically switch profiles when the application focus on your computer changes. The Palette starter kit is available for $ 199 on the Palette website.

iPhone 7 Plus dual-cam only offers stabilization in wide-anlge lens, report says

According to a report by Ming-Chi Kuo of analyst firm KGI that was obtained by MacRumors, the iPhone 7 Plus dual-camera is equipped with optical image stabilization in the 28mm equiv. wide-angle lens, but not in its longer 56mm equiv. lens. In the report, KGI claims that optical image stabilization will likely make it into the tele lens with the next upgrade of the device in 2017 via a ‘voice coil motor’ upgrade:

“Note that for the dual-camera of iPhone 7 Plus, wide-angle CCM is equipped with optical image stabilization (OIS) VCM, while telephoto CCM only comes with general VCM. We believe the focus of the dual-camera upgrade will be equipping telephoto CCM with OIS CCM, so as to significantly enhance optical and digital zoom quality.”

In the same report KGI predicts that for the foreseeable future the dual-camera feature will remain exclusive to the larger iPhone Plus model which is expected to represent 30-40% of all iPhone sales. 

Apple limiting certain camera features to the larger model is not without precedent. In the iPhone 6 and 6s generations only the Plus devices were equipped with optical image stabilization. With the 7th generation this has now trickled down to the standard model and we would expect the same thing to happen with the dual-camera at some point in the future. 

During the launch presentation Apple did not mention a lack of OIS in the tele lens. In practical terms this would mean that, when shooting with the tele module,  the camera has to use higher ISO values in lower light to avoid camera shake. That said, we’ll have to wait for a review model to find what this means for image quality.

Sony offers E PZ 18-110mm F4 G OSS for Super 35mm/APS-C

Sony has announced the E PZ 18-110mm F4 G OSS power zoom lens for Super 35mm/APS-C format, designed for video shooters. It’s the second lens in Sony’s lineup to use the company’s Smooth Motion Optics (SMO) design to prevent focus breathing, focus shifts and axial image shifts while zooming. Other potential benefits to movie makers include a dust- and moisture-resistant design, built-in SteadyShot and quiet operation, as well separate, geared rings for focus, zoom and aperture control.

Nikon offers ¥500,000 and D5 for its 100th Anniversary prize in annual photo competition

Nikon has announced the opening of the 36th Nikon Photo Contest and is giving away cash as well as a collection of top end DSLR cameras to winners. As the company is celebrating its 100th anniversary it has introduced a special category, the prize for which is ¥500,000 (approx $ 4900) and a Nikon D5 with the AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm F2.8E ED VR lens. A further category in addition to the usual Open section is designed for photographers under the age of 30.

The Grand prize will be a D5 with AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm F2.8E ED VR, while the most popular entry will win a D810 with the same lens. The first prize for each category is the same D810 kit, while 21 second prizes will be awarded of D500 bodies with AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-80mm F2.8-4E ED VR lenses. A total of 35 D5500 bodies will be given away to 3rd placed entries along with a AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55mm F3.5-5.6G VR II each.

The theme for the 100th Anniversary category is ‘Celebration’, and entrance is via a single image that must have been taken on Nikon equipment. The Next Generation category, for under 30s, and the Open category have the theme ‘Future’ and require two to five images per entry or a video of six to 180 seconds. Any brand of camera may be used for these categories.

Nikon is pleased to announce that entries for the Nikon Photo Contest 2016-2017 will be accepted between October 17, 2016 and January 27, 2017.

One of the world’s largest international photo contests since its inception in 1969, the 36th Nikon Photo Contest sees the addition of two new categories. The ‘Nikon 100th Anniversary’ category celebrates Nikon’s upcoming 100th birthday in 2017, and the ‘Next Generation’ category, for anyone under the age of 30, looks to encourage the talent of the next generation of photographers.

World renowned graphic designer and art director, Neville Brody, has been chosen as Lead Judge due to his huge influence on artists, including photographers, both young and old. He says of his role, “The Nikon Photo Contest is recognised globally as a key place to discover new and rising talent, searching out rich, imaginative power and inspiration. As Lead Judge, I feel it is my responsibility to continue this great tradition by selecting works that represent new ideas and superior quality. Polaroid LED photo studio color box light offers portable, low-heat lighting

A new Polaroid-branded LED photo studio color box light has been introduced: a 907g / 2lb lightweight offering with an attachable handgrip, remote control and quiet operation easy-press buttons. Information including the color temperature, brightness and mode, as well as battery life, are displayed on an integrated LCD.

The new color box light is designed to be highly portable with support for both handheld and tripod usage; it can also be connected to other photo boxes for larger projects. According to Polaroid, the light features 600 LEDs and can achieve up to a 93% efficiency.

Sony Xperia X Compact offers high-end camera in smaller format

Along with the Xperia XZ, Sony has launched the Xperia X Compact. It’s aimed at users who want a powerful camera in a compact body but can live with a slightly less powerful chipset.

The X Compact comes with the same 23MP ‘triple sensor’ main camera with laser-AF and color sensor as the Xperia XZ, but doesn’t offer 4K video and uses a front camera with a lower 5MP resolution, compared to the XZ’s 13MP. Like previous Sony Compact models the new device has a 4.6” display with 720p HD resolution, putting it in direct competition with Apple’s iPhone 6s. The Sony is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 chipset and features 3GB of RAM in conjunction with 32GB of internal storage. The latter is expandable via a microSD slot. Power is provided by a 2700 mAh battery, that, like on the larger model, supports smart battery management and quick charging.

The power button doubles as fingerprint reader to ensure secure device access and online shopping. In contrast to the Xperia XZ the Compact model comes with a plastic body that does not feature any environmental protection. However, this is reflected in pricing. The Xperia Z Compact will be available in Europe from September for a more affordable €449 (approximately $ 560).

Canon offers SD card-shaped Wi-Fi adapter, EOS 7D II bundle

Canon has introduced a Wi-Fi adapter shaped remarkably like an SD card, designed to bring wireless connectivity to dual card slot cameras like the EOS 7D II and 5DS/R. The W-E1 adapter will be sold bundled with the EOS 7D II as well as separately, and will work with previously purchased 7D II and 5DS/R models once a firmware updated is applied.

Though it looks like an SD card, the W-E1 doesn’t include any storage, so the camera’s available CF card slot will need to be used. When used with the EOS 7D II the card can transfer stills and MP4 video files; with the EOS 5DS/R only still images can be transferred. 

The W-E1 will be available in early September for $ 50. A new Canon EOS 7D II kit with the W-E1 and the EF-S 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 IS USM lens will go on sale in October for $ 2,449; a body-only kit with the adapter will cost $ 1,849. Firmware to enable use of the card with previously purchased 7D II units will be available in early September, followed by one for 5DS/R owners will in November.

ThinkTank updates Shape Shifter camera bags and offers ‘naked’ option

CamFi DSLR controller now offers real-time upload to Dropbox

The makers of the CamFi wireless DSLR controller have launched a new version of their iOS app. It now allows the user to transfer photos to Dropbox in real-time while shooting. The new feature is aimed at photojournalists who want to send images to news desks as quickly as possible but can arguably be useful in other scenarios as well.

To make the system work, photographers need a so-called MiFi, a portable broadband device that allows multiple mobile devices to share a 3G or 4G mobile broadband Internet connection, or a second phone that is acting as a mobile hot-spot. Both the CamFi that is attached to the DSLR via a USB-cable and the phone that is running the CamFi app are then connected to the MiFi. This way, the CamFi can be controlled via the app and access the Internet at the same time.

As images are captured they are sent from the CamFi to the control phone via Wi-Fi and uploaded from the phone to Dropbox via the MiFi’s internet connection. This works for both Raw and JPEG files. The same system can be setup when controlling CamFi from a Windows PC. The developers say Mac and Android versions will be released very soon.
