Fujifilm X-E3 offers 24MP sensor and extensive touch control

Fujifilm has announced the X-E3, sporting a 24.3MP X-Trans sensor and 4K video capture. It updates the X-E2S, which was itself a fairly minor update to the X-E2, so brings a number of welcome upgrades.

The X-E3 borrows much of its hardware from the X-T20, including a 325-point AF system with a handy new AF Area All option that activates various modes as the AF point size is changed. The camera also uses and updated subject tracking algorithm that claims better success tracking smaller and faster objects. Its predecessor’s built-in flash has been omitted, but an EF-X8 accessory flash is included in the box.

Video recording at 4K/30p is offered, taken by the full width of the sensor. Full 1080 HD can be had at up to 60p. The X-E3 continues to offer Wi-Fi, and adds the option for a constant Bluetooth low energy connection to a smartphone.

The X-E2S’s fixed 3″ 1.04M-dot LCD has been upgraded to a (still non-articulated) touchscreen in the X-E3, and a new feature called Touch Function puts additional customizable touch controls at the user’s fingertips. The camera’s rear control panel loses the directional navigation buttons in favor of touch control, but gains an AF joystick.

The Fujifilm X-E3 is expected to arrive in September in three kit configurations: body-only for $ 900, with 18-55mm for $ 1300, or with 23mm F2 R WR for $ 1150.

Valhalla, N.Y., September 7, 2017 – As a leader in advanced digital camera technology, FUJIFILM North America Corporation today announced the new FUJIFILM X-E3 rangefinder style mirrorless digital camera with outstanding image quality and enhanced handling. The X-E3 features the latest 24.3MP X-Trans CMOS III image sensor and the X-Processor Pro high-speed image processing engine, along with a new image recognition algorithm in an ultra-compact body.

Also announced today is the new XF80mmF2.8 R LM OIS WR Macro Lens, the first 1.0x magnification mid-telephoto macro lens in the X Series lineup of interchangeable lenses. The lens features a focal length equivalent to 122mm (in the 35mm format) and a maximum aperture of F2.8 for beautiful bokeh.

Exceptional Autofocus Tracking and High-Speed Response
The FUJIFILM X-E3 features a large phase detection autofocus (AF) area and provides photographers with enhanced tracking performance for moving subjects. Equipped with a newly developed image recognition algorithm, the X-E3 is able to track moving subjects half the size, or moving twice as fast as previous models.

The X-E3 supports both Full HD and 4K video recording. Videos can be shot with Film Simulations in-camera to easily produce creative high-resolution footage.

The compact and lightweight X-E3 is perfect for quick snapshots, boasting high-speed response times including a start-up time of just 0.4 seconds, shooting interval of 0.25 seconds, shutter time lag of 0.05 seconds and autofocus speed as fast as 0.06 seconds.

Enhanced Connectivity and Intuitive Touchscreen Control
The X-E3 is the first X Series model to feature Bluetooth® low energy wireless communication. Providing photographers with enhanced connectivity, this feature offers the ability to pair the camera with a smartphone or tablet for easy transfer of pictures via the free FUJIFILM Camera Remote application.

The X-E3 features a high-resolution 3.0 inch 1.04M-dot static touchscreen LCD monitor to provide users with easy, intuitive operations in a variety of shooting and playback modes. When shooting with the X-E3, the touchscreen can be used to select the focus area, or focus on a specific point before taking a picture. For playback, users can enjoy the ability to swipe or scroll through images, double-tap to enlarge, drag an image once enlarged, along with pinch-out and pinch-in sizing. A new Touch Function feature will also be available on the X-E3, enabling users to create customized camera functions by swiping left, right, up and down on the touchscreen panel.

Ultra-Compact and Lightweight Body for Portability and Practicality
Making it the perfect companion for everyday shooting and travel photography, the new FUJIFILM X-E3 is the most compact and lightweight model with a viewfinder within the X Series interchangeable lens camera range. The X-E3 also features a Focus Lever positioned on the rear side of the camera that allows photographers to use joystick-type operations in eight directions to easily select a focus area.

The top plate features two precision-milled aluminum dials, giving the camera a premium feel and allowing users to easily adjust the shutter speed and exposure compensation while maintaining focus on taking a picture. The Exposure Compensation Dial now has the C position for exposure compensation up to ±5 stops. The new X-E3 is also equipped with an Auto mode selector lever for selecting the fully-automatic Advanced SR Auto mode where the camera can automatically select the optimum settings for a given scene.

The new XF80mmF2.8 R LM OIS WR is a lightweight, mid-telephoto macro lens designed to deliver the very best results from Fujifilm’s unique X-Trans CMOS sensor. Capable of achieving high quality macro shots, the XF80mmF2.8 R LM OIS WR features an optical construction of 16 elements in 12 groups, including one aspherical lens, one Super ED lens and three ED lenses. Updated X Mount Lens Roadmap Unveiled
Also announced is the latest development of the X Mount Lens Roadmap for developing interchangeable lenses for the X Series line of mirrorless digital cameras. The latest roadmap adds two new lenses: the ultra-wide angle zoom lens XF8-16mmF2.8 R LM WR and the telephoto prime lens XF200mmF2 R LM OIS WR. New Firmware Updates Coming Soon
Fujifilm will release new firmware updates for the FUJIFILM X-Pro2, X-T2, X100F and X-T20 X Series cameras in November and December 2017 to add new functionality and improve operability. These updates will include new support for FUJIFILM X RAW STUDIO, dramatic improvements to the AF-C tracking algorithm in zone and tracking AF mode, addition of 4K video support and computer tethering functions and enhancements to touch panel operations.

Olympus OM-D E-M10 III offers 4K video, bigger dials and beginner-friendly UI adjustments

Olympus has announced the OM-D E-M10 Mark III, a subtle update to its entry-level OM-D body. The addition of a TruePic VIII processor brings 4K video capture at 30/25/24p, and an ergonomic update introduces bigger dials and a curved handgrip to the still-diminutive camera.

The E-M10 III continues to use its predecessor’s 16MP Micro Four Thirds sensor, meaning image quality is largely unchanged, though you will be able to apply a new Bleach Bypass Art Filter to your images. The E-M10 II’s 81 autofocus points have been upped to 121 points, and burst shooting gets a smidgen faster: up to 8.6 fps compared to 8.5 fps.

Maintained from the previous model is 5-axis in-body stabilization, which can be used in conjunction with digital stabilization for videos – even while recording at 4K resolution. Also consistent with its predecessor are a 2.36M-dot OLED viewfinder and a tilting 3″ 1.04M-dot touchscreen.

The rest of this model’s updates center around usability, specifically for a beginner. Auto mode has been updated with more intelligent scene and subject recognition, and modes for more specialized use-cases (such as focus bracketing and Live Time) are now organized under an Advanced Photo mode on the dial. A new shortcut button offers access to relevant settings based on the camera mode in use.

The Olympus OM-D E-M10 III is expected to ship in late September for $ 650 body only and $ 800 bundled with an M.Zuiko 14–42mm EZ lens.

Nikon D850 offers 45.7MP BSI FX-format sensor, 7 fps bursts, 4K video

Nikon appears to have pulled out all the stops for its D850, announced today. It combines high resolution and speed: a full-frame 45.7MP BSI CMOS sensor with no low pass filter capable of full resolution 7 fps bursts with AF/AE (boosted to 9 fps when paired with the optional MB-D18 battery grip and EN-EL18a/b battery). The D850 also offers the D5’s excellent 153-point AF system, as well as a native ISO range of 64-25,600 (expandable to 32 or up to 102,400).

The D850 also improves on the D810’s video offerings with the inclusion of full-frame 4K 24/25/30p capture. Focus peaking (1080p-only) and zebra stripes are provided for videographers, as well as uncompressed 4:2:2 8-bit 4K HDMI output and microphone/headphone inputs.

The D850’s magnesium alloy body is weather sealed, and illuminated controls provide better visibility in dark situations.

This video game offers an in-game photo studio for shooting exotic cars

Players of the next version of PlayStation’s Gran Turismo Sport will be able to create professional looking photographs of their cars using a new feature that offers a surprising amount of ‘photographic’ control over the way the images turn out. For us mere photographic mortals, it might be the closest we’ll ever get to shooting a $ 2.5 million car with a $ 50,000 camera…

The Gran Turismo features is called ‘Scapes’, and it lets players place their favorite cars in a wide range of scenes—from landscapes to city streets and interiors—and adjust their camera ‘controls’ to dial in things like depth of field.

A control panel down the side of the screen has software-like sliders for exposure compensation, aperture, shutter speed and focus. The car can be turned and parked where you like, the lights switched between beam settings, and the color temperature of the whole scene can be adjusted to create warm and cool effects.

More than a passing thought has gone into creating the Scapes mode, and the control of the images really seems extensive.

Users can alter the color balance of shadows, mid-tones and highlights using RGB sliders, while grain effects can be added along with vignetting and distortion corrections. And if that’s not enough, you can even blur the background using a panning effect, to deliver a race day atmosphere in one of around 1000 scenes.

The ‘Scapes’ feature is a new format of photography, borne from a True HDR workflow and physics based rendering technologies. Each photo spot contains all the light energy information of that scene as data. Even the incredible brightness of the Sun is physically recorded and contained in each of these photos; and because each image also contains spacial information for that scene, it is now possible to ‘place’ cars into real world photographs.

FAA offers drone registration refunds following court ruling

In 2015, the FAA issued the Registration Rule mandating that small drones used for recreational purposes had to be registered with the Administration. This was the law of the land until the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit vacated the FAA’s Registration Rule for these small drones (called ‘model aircraft’) in May of this year, saying the requirement ‘directly violates’ Section 336(a) of the FAA Modernization and Reform Act signed by President Obama in 2012.

Thanks to that ruling, small drone owners who registered their aircraft are now eligible for a refund.

Earlier this week, the FAA announced that small drone owners who operate their unmanned aircraft for recreational purposes can choose to have their FAA registration deleted and to receive a refund for the registration fee—a whopping $ 5.

This deletion and refund, however, only applies to drones that are ‘exclusively in compliance’ with Section 336: that is, for small aircraft that are solely operated for recreational purposes. And, for what it’s worth, the FAA says it still encourages these model aircraft owners to voluntarily register their drones, so if you already registered your drone you might want to remain $ 5 poorer and leave your registration intact.

If, on the other hand, you do want a refund, you’ll need to print, fill out and mail in this form to the FAA—the mailing address is located on the bottom of the second page.

Meeting Owl robotic video offers 360-degree views of conferences

Owl Labs, a startup backed by Android co-founder Andy Rubin, has launched a new camera called the Meeting Owl. This 360-degree camera is designed specifically for companies and groups, enabling them to hold video conferences without the burden of manually operating the cameras. The Owl does the hard work itself, automatically focusing the video feed on the person who is talking. Oh, and guess what it looks like? Yep, an adorable, productivity-increasing owl.

The device features a 360-degree camera on the top of its cylindrical body, as well as a total of 8 omnidirectional beam-forming microphones for capturing audio from all directions. The combination of the two enables Owl to capture everyone around a table at the same time, presenting viewers with a full view of the conference room. The camera shifts focus onto whomever is speaking, and presents split-views if multiple people are engaging in a conversation. The microphones isolate important noise from unwanted ambient sounds.

Owl Labs has designed its conferencing camera to work with major video conferencing platforms, including Slack, Skype, Google Hangouts, Zoom, and GoToMeeting; the camera is plug-and-play via a USB cable. According to the company’s website, ‘limited quantities’ of the Meeting Owl are available at this time, with shipping starting within the next four weeks. The camera is priced at $ 799.

Panasonic AU-EVA1 offers EF-mount Super 35 5.7K capture to SD with Raw promised

Panasonic has announced a 5.7K Super 35 format cinema camera that sits between the GH5 and the VariCam LT 4K. The camera is built around a Canon EF mount and can capture 4K video at up to 10-bit 4:2:2 quality to SD cards.

Panasonic hasn’t discussed revealed detailed specs yet but says the camera will have ‘dual native ISOs,’ which is usually videographer speak for sensors with a dual gain design.

The camera has XLR audio inputs and both HDMI and SDI video outputs. Initially it will output 4K over these connectors but Panasonic promises 5.7K Raw output to external recorders with a firmware update. The camera will ship in ‘the autumn’ at a cost of around €8000.

Panasonic has previewed the AU-EVA1, at Cine Gear Expo 2017 in Los Angeles, USA, a new 5.7K cinema camera positioned between the Panasonic Lumix GH5 4K mirrorless camera and the VariCam LT 4K cinema camera. Compact and lightweight, the AU-EVA1 is tailor-made for handheld shooting, but also well suited for documentaries, commercials, and music videos.

“For cinema-style acquisition, we realised there was a space between the GH5 and the VariCam LT,” said EMEA Marketing Manager Nela Pertl. “With its compact size and new 5.7K sensor, the EVA1 fills that gap for a variety of filmmaking applications.”

The EVA1 contains a newly designed 5.7K Super 35mm-sized sensor for capturing true cinematic images. By starting at a higher native resolution, the 5.7K sensor yields a higher resolving image when down sampled to 4K, UHD, 2K, and even 720p. The increased colour information results in a finer, more accurate finished image.

One of the key features of the VariCam 35, VariCam LT, and VariCam Pure is dual native ISO. Utilising a process that allows the sensor to be read in a fundamentally different way, dual native ISO extracts more information from the sensor without degrading the image. This results in a camera that can switch from a standard sensitivity to a high sensitivity without an increase in noise, or other artifacts.

“On the VariCams, dual native ISO has allowed cinematographers to use less light on set, saving time and money, as well as allowing for a great variety of artistic choices. The EVA1 will include dual native ISO, but the camera is currently being tested to determine final ISO specifications,” added Nela Pertl.

The ability to capture accurate colours and rich skin tones is a must for any filmmaker. Like the VariCam lineup of cinema cameras, the EVA1 contains V-Log/V-Gamut capture to deliver high dynamic range and broad colours. V-Log has log curve characteristics that are somewhat reminiscent of negative film and V-Gamut delivers a colour space even larger than film. The EVA1 will also import the celebrated colourimetry of the VariCam line.

Weighing only 1.2Kg (body-only) with a compact form factor (17cm x 13.5cm x 13.3cm) and a removable handgrip, EVA1 can be used for efficient handheld shooting applications and can also be mounted on a drone, gimbal rig, or jib arm for complex yet smooth camera moves. There will also be numerous mounting points and Panasonic is currently working with top accessory makers to allow further customisation with the EVA1.

Ideal for indie filmmakers, the EVA1 records to readily-available, lower-cost SD cards. The camera can record in several formats and compression rates, and offers up to 10-bit 422, even in 4K. A complete breakdown of recording formats will be available at the time of the EVA1’s release.

The camera utilises a native EF-mount, giving shooters access to the broad EF lens ecosystem, including dozens of cinema-style prime and zoom lenses from numerous manufacturers. Electronic Image Stabilisation (EIS) is employed to compensate for camera shake and blurring, which will help smooth out handheld or shoulder-mount shots on documentary or run-and-gun projects. Behind the lens mount, an integrated ND filter wheel in 2, 4, and 6 stops allows for precise exposure control. The EVA1 also allows the IR Cut filter to be swung out of the path to the sensor at the push of a button. Unique photographic effects and night vision imagery are possible with this control over infrared.

As a professional video production tool, the EVA1 offers dual balanced XLR audio inputs and 4K-capable video outputs in both HDMI and SDI. In a future firmware upgrade, EVA1 will offer 5.7K RAW output to 3rd party recorders.

The EVA1 will ship this autumn for under €8,000 (body only).

Sigma offers firmware updates for four Canon mount lenses

Sigma has released new firmware for Canon mount versions of four of its lenses:

  • 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM | Contemporary Canon
  • 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM | Contemporary Canon
  • 18-300mm F3.5-6.3 DC MACRO OS HSM | Contemporary Canon
  • 24-105mm F4 DG OS HSM | Art Canon

According to Sigma, the new firmware improves the AF accuracy of the lenses when used with the Sigma Mount Converter MC-11, as well as decreasing the lens diaphragm blades noise when using the aforementioned converter.

The same AF accuracy improvement and decreased noise also apply to the lenses when they are used with Canon EOS DSLRs while shooting video or while in Live Mode. Finally, Sigma says these lenses are now compatible with the Canon Digital Cinema Camera EOS C300 Mark II. 

Sigma lens owners with the Sigma USB Dock must first update the Sigma Optimization Pro software to, at minimum, version 1.4.1 (Windows) or version 1.4.0 (Mac) before installing the new firmware.

Alpa Silex unit offers electronic control of Canon and Nikon lenses on digital medium-format backs

Swiss camera and adapter manufacturer Alpa has introduced a new device that allows Nikon and Canon users to mount some of their lenses on digital medium format backs and have access to aperture controls. The Alpa Silex control unit works with the company’s 12 series bodies and brings aperture control to electronically operated lenses from Canon and Nikon, as well as Contax, Hasselblad and Rollei. All Canon EF lenses can be controlled but only Nikon E lenses, with electromagnetic diaphragm mechanisms, will work.

With a Silex in place compatible lenses can be used to record images on a wide range of digital medium format backs. The A12 cameras accept digital backs of a variety of ages, so users don’t necessarily need the latest, and the image area will depend on the size of the sensor used and the covering circle of the lens. 

The Silex not only allows aperture adjustments but also AF control in most Hasselblad H, Canon EF and Nikon E lenses, and web access means the device can be handled remotely over a server.

The control unit ALPA Silex is a brand new, central element of ALPA’s extended modular photographic system. Photographers and soon even videographers will be able to combine ALPA cameras with digital backs of various manufacturers and lenses from Canon, Contax, Hasselblad, Nikon or Rollei. A variety of functions and operating modes are available to the user.

Handy and flexible – Silex is the Swiss pocket knife of the control units. Under this claim, ALPA presented the product at the Photokina 2016. The name Silex itself, however, goes much further back: it reminds us of the material for the all-purpose tools of the stone-age. ALPA Silex is the new all-purpose tool in the ALPA system. It can be used to convert any model of the classic ALPA-12 series into an electronic camera.

The basis for the development of ALPA Silex is the ALPA 12 FPS, introduced at Photokina 2012, with electronically controlled focal plane shutter. The integrated controller was separated as a standalone module and all functions except for the slot shutter were taken over. All known digital components from Hasselblad, Phase One / Leaf and Sinar can be synchronized and the electromechanical diaphragms of Canon EF, Contax, Hasselblad H, Nikon E and Rollei can be controlled. The leaf shutter in Hasselblad HC / HCD (up to 1/800s, “orange” line even up to 1/1000s) and Rollei 6000 (up to 1/500s) can be used, as well as the focus control of many of the lenses from Canon, Hasselblad H and Nikon E. The integrated web server allows remote control in networks without software installation. The future support of Sinar eShutter systems is already prepared.

Together with existing camera models from ALPA, the photographer can use a vast number of third party lenses and, depending on the available image circle, also perform shifts (shifting and stitching). In the future, our back-end adapters will also make it possible to use ALPA cameras for video recording in conjunction with the corresponding digital backs.

  • As well as the ALPA lens module Hasselblad fix (HAF).
  • Also, immediately available for download is the latest firmware version 4.03, which makes all new functions of ALPA Silex also available for the ALPA 12 FPS. Free as always – as an investment in the ALPA system is sustainable and the term ‘planned obsolescence’ is alien to ALPA. Even if the environment changes, an ALPA will persist.

Delkin BLACK USB 3.0 Rugged Memory Card Reader offers microSD, CF and SD slots

Delkin has launched the BLACK USB 3.0 Rugged, a large memory card reader featuring both microSD and SD UHS-II card slots.  This is the first rugged memory card reader offering both of these slots in a single device, according to Delkin, making it a suitable model for on-the-go photographers who are frequently in ‘strenuous shooting environments.’

In addition to support both USH-II SD and microSD cards, the BLACK USB 3.0 Rugged has a larger Compact Flash UDMA 7 memory card slot. Transfer speeds reach up to 500MB/s, which Delkin says is ten times the speed of USB 2.0. All three card slots can be used at the same time, while the USB transfer cord and one of each type of flash card can be stored inside of the media card reader when not in use.

The card reader itself is made from both plastic and aluminum with a rubber cover that shields the device from water, dust, and impacts caused by bumps and drops. If the BLACK USB 3.0 Rugged does break at any point within its 5-year warranty period, Delkin will ship a replacement to the customer within 48 hours. The model is available now exclusively within authorized retail camera stores; price isn’t clear at this time.
