Xiaomi Redmi Pro offers dual-cam and OLED technology at budget price point

Chinese electronics manufacturer Xiaomi has today announced the latest model in its affordable Redmi line of smartphones. Looking at the device’s body materials and specifications it would not look out of place in the company’s flagship Mi series, though. 

In the imaging department the Redmi Pro features a dual-camera setup that combines a 13MP Sony IMX258 1/3.06″ sensor with a 5MP Samsung depth sensor. The dual-cam does not offer any optical zoom capability, like on the LG G5, nor does it combine the captured image information from both sensors for improved image quality, like on the Huawei P9. Instead, it uses the dual-camera to simulate the bokeh of a fast lens on a large-sensor camera, something we first saw on the HTC One M8. Like on the HTC and several other dual-cam devices, you can change the focus point of the image post-capture in the gallery app. 

There is also a dual-tone LED flash and at the front the Xiaomi comes with a 5MP selfie-camera. Images can be viewed and composed on a 5.5″ 1080p OLED display with full NTSC gamut. A fingerprint reader is on board for increased security and all the electronics are provided with power by a beefy 4050mAh battery that supports quick charging via a USB Type-C port.

The components are wrapped up in a gold or silver brushed metal unibody that gives the device a premium look. The Redmi Pro comes comes in several versions that differ in terms of processor power and memory. Pricing starts at approximately $ 225 for the deca-core Helio X20 chipset, 32GB of storage and 3GB RAM and go up to approximately $ 300 for the faster Helio X25 chipset with 128GB storage and 4GB of RAM.

Now with 4K: Fujifilm X-T2 offers 24MP, improved AF and video specs

Fujifilm has updated its premium SLR-style X-series lineup with the X-T2, bringing 4K video capture to its lineup for the first time.

The camera uses the 24.3MP X-Trans CMOS III APS-C sensor first seen in the X-Pro2 and also includes an upgraded hybrid AF system with more focus points, as well as an AF-point selection joystick a la the X-Pro2. There’s also a faster top mechanical shutter speed of 1/8000 sec (1/32,000 sec with the electronic electronic), an improved AF-C algorithm and an overall boost in response times when using the camera. Like the X-T1, this camera is weather-sealed.

The X-T2 offers an unchanged 2.36 million-dot OLED EVF carried over from its predecessor, but the 1.04 million-dot 3″ LCD has an additional hinge for waist-level portrait-orientation shooting. An optional ‘Vertical Power Booster Grip’ is offered. The grip houses two batteries and lives up to its name by ‘boosting’ mechanical shutter burst shooting to 11 fps (from 8 fps), reducing shutter lag and blackout time slightly and allowing for 30 minutes of 4K capture (as opposed to 10). 

An EF-X500 hot shoe flash is also introduced for the system, offering a guide number of 50 with a tilting flash head.

The Fujifilm X-T2 will be available in September for $ 1,599.95 body-only, or bundled with the XF18-55mm for $ 1,899.95. The EF-XF500 flash will also be available in September for $ 449.99.

Valhalla, N.Y., July 7, 2016 – As a leader in advanced digital camera technology and outstanding image quality, FUJIFILM North America Corporation today announced the new FUJIFILM X-T2, a splash-resistant premium interchangeable lens camera with a large OLED electronic viewfinder (EVF). The X-T2 houses the latest generation 24.3MP X-Trans CMOS III with an APS-C sensor with no low-pass filter, boasting the highest performance in the history of X Series. The new X-T2 produces crisp image resolution comparable to that of cameras equipped with larger sensors and higher pixel counts, all in a more compact and classically-designed body.

And for the first time, the new FUJIFILM X-T2 now supports 4K video recording that can use each available Film Simulation mode, including ACROS, to easily produce premium-quality footage that is as unique as the photographer behind the viewfinder.

Dramatic improvement to auto focus system The FUJIFILM X-T2 receives a dramatically improved auto focus system (AF) that increases the overall single AF points to 325, and the number of Zone focusing points to 91 (expanded from 49 in previous models). Approximately 40% of the imaging area (center area containing 49 focusing points) is covered with phase detection auto focus pixels to form a fast and precise phase detection auto focus area that can be used in a variety of scenes.

With the high-speed X-Processor Pro and the use of improved algorithms, the X-T2 now refocuses more frequently, enabling predictive AF of advanced accuracy.

The X-T2 also has an enhanced ability to autofocus on small points of light, low-contrast objects and subjects with fine and delicate textures such as bird feathers and animal fur.

The X-T2’s performance of contrast detection AF, enabled for approximately 65% of the imaging area, has also been improved. The data read speed has been doubled compared to previous models to achieve AF performance of higher speed and precision. Photographers will enjoy accurate focusing is all shooting situations, even in low light with a -3EV.

Another area of improvement is the AF-C algorithm that has been significantly enhanced for even higher accuracy when focus-tracking moving subjects in the AF-C mode. According to the type of movement, users can choose individual settings for Subject Retention Characteristic, Acceleration / Deceleration Tracking Characteristic and Focus Zone Characteristic, or select one of five presets or customize specific settings for these three elements.

Image Quality
Fujifilm’s commitment to superior image quality remains a guiding principle, and the FUJIFILM X-T2 is the latest effort to deliver outstanding picture resolution, all from a compact and sophisticated body that is both weather-sealed and easy to travel with in any location. With Fujifilm’s proprietary image design technology, produced through the development of photographic films, the X-T2 reproduces warm skin tones, bright blue skies and rich green foliage in beautiful colors, just as you remember seeing in real life. The X-T2 includes the ACROS Film Simulation for smooth gradation, deep blacks and beautiful textures to create monochrome images that far outperform even the most demanding expectations.

The X-T2 also has the Grain Effect function for reproducing distinctive graininess seen in photographs taken with film cameras. The function is available in Strong and Weak options, and can be combined with any of the Film Simulation modes. You can easily obtain the effect of film-based photos, notable especially when the image is printed out.

Speedy throughout
Basic response specifications, such as startup time, shooting interval and shutter release time lag, have all been improved to the extreme in pursuit of a camera that operates exactly as the photographer demands. The high-speed processing power and the use of improved algorithms have significantly improved the basic autofocus performance, and X-T2 now gives users AF-C Custom Settings for even higher accuracy in focus-tracking moving subjects.

The X-T2’s electronic viewfinder, which is used to continuously track a moving subject, is capable of displaying up to 100 frames per second, while also maintaining the magnification ratio of 0.77x and the display time lag of 0.005 seconds. The duration of the viewfinder blackout, in which the evf blacks out temporarily while the camera reads picture data, has been reduced by more than half, enabling continuous shooting to ensure tracking subject movements.

Body and grip offer ultimate stability
The X-T2’s body is fully made of magnesium alloy making it not only compact and lightweight, but also solid and highly durable. The X-T2 body has weather-proofing at 63 points to achieve a high level of resistance to dust and moisture, and coupled with its ability to operate in temperatures down to 14°F, is ready for full-fledged field photography. Similar ruggedness is applied to the new Vertical Power Booster Grip.

The Vertical Power Booster Grip (optional VPB-XT2) is a dust-resistant grip, rugged and capable of operating at temperatures as low as 14°F that maximizes the performance of the X-T2 beyond expectations. It fits two batteries, bringing the total number of batteries the X-T2 can use to three, including the one in-camera, to increase the maximum number of frames that can be taken per charge to approximately 1,000 (Normal mode). In the Boost mode, multiple batteries can operate at the same time to give a boost to camera performance in continuous shooting, shooting interval, shutter release time lag and blackout time, while also extending the duration of 4K video recording to approximately 30 minutes.

The Vertical Power Booster Grip also features a shutter release button, focus thumbstick, AE-L button, AF-L button, command dials, Q button and Fn button and headphone jack to enable audio monitoring during video recording to provide the same level of excellent operability in vertical shooting as you get in horizontal operation. The grip itself has battery-charging functionality where by using the AC adapter supplied (AC-9VS), users can fully charge two batteries at the same time in about two hours.

FUJIFILM EF-X500 Flash
The new high-end multi-function external FUJIFILM EF-X500 Flash is now official for the lineup of accessories for the X Series of digital cameras. The EF-X500 is a hot-shoe mount flash with a maximum guide number of approximately 50, and includes support for the FP mode (high-speed flash sync) so that the flash can be fired at any shutter speed. Photographers can now concentrate on shooting when a faster shutter speed is required, for example, in order to use a near-maximum aperture to produce beautiful bokeh.

The EF-X500 also supports multi-flash lighting. Users can set up multiple flashes to freely control light on a subject and background for a creative result. Through-the-lens (TTL) lighting control is available with single flash and also in the multi-flash setup, so that users can start shooting without having to make cumbersome adjustments to light output.

Go hands-free: GoHawk offers bite-triggered remote shutter for GoPro

Mounting your GoPro on your chest or helmet frees up your hands for all those extreme moments you’d like to capture, but when you still need to operate the shutter, are you truly hands-free? The GoHawk by Oregon-based POA Labs wants to help.

Currently in prototype form, the GoHawk is an accessory kit that includes three remote shutter options: a handlebar, tongue and bite switch. The GoHawk is also designed to tell its user when the GoPro is actually recording via an LED indicator light that can be positioned inside of a helmet. Also included is an auxiliary USB power port for extended shooting.

The unit is compatible with the GoPro Hero4 and essentially works like a camera cable release – that is triggering the switch via, your teeth, tongue or finger will allow you to record video, shoot single exposures or trigger a burst. The LED indicator light will be illuminated red while the GoPro is recording video or shooting stills and blue while the unit is on standby.

POA Labs is seeking a total of $ 20,000 in funding. The unit and a single type of switch (your choice) is offered with a $ 131 pledge. Backers of the GoHawk can expect their units to ship in September 2016 if the funding campaign is a success.

Nikon offers free battery exchange for D500 owners

Nikon is offering to replace ‘early generation’ EN-EL15 batteries for D500 users who are getting less than the expected battery life from their cameras. In a statement, the company explains that batteries manufactured prior to a design change in 2013 ‘may not be capable of the maximum number of shots possible […] indicated in D500 documentation’. If you can supply a valid receipt for the purchase of a D500, the company will replace these older batteries at no charge.

The exchange applies to older EN-1L15 batteries marked ‘Li-ion01’. Newer batteries, labeled ‘Li-ion20’ (shown below) are not eligible for exchange. 

This exchange only applies to EN-EL15 batteries with ‘Li-ion01’ printed on the rear. Batteries manufactured after 2013 (which includes all batteries supplied with new D500 bodies) are labeled ‘Li-ion20’ and are not eligible for replacement. Nikon claims the difference between these batteries is not one of capacity, but of electric discharge profile.

So if you’re a new D500 owner and you’re not getting the battery life you expect, check to see if ‘Li-ion01’ is marked on the back of the battery. If you’re still seeing poor endurance from the new battery that came in the box with your camera, we’ve found that it helps to engage Airplane Mode.

Hasselblad offers no-loss trade-up on H6D to those waiting for 100MP back

With the Hasselblad 100c 100MP back delayed by the after effects of the Japanese earthquake the company has introduced a trade-up deal for photographers who want to get their hands on the new H6D medium format body sooner rather than later. The deal allows photographers to buy the camera with the 50c 50MP back now and then trade-up without financial penalty later when the higher resolution back becomes available.

Those trading up will only have to pay the difference in recommended sales price between the two backs, so Hasselblad will effectively take the 50c back for the same amount that was paid for it. This means those who are waiting for the 100c to become available before buying the H6D can start using the new, improved camera now.

The sensor used in the 100c back is made by Sony at its plant in the Kumamoto region of Japan. The factory was badly damaged in the recent earthquakes and is only just getting production underway now, so there will be quite a delay before Hasselblad can get its 100c into the stores. The sensor in the 50c back is also made by Sony, but as it has been in production for longer the company had a stock-pile before the earthquakes struck.

Samsung offers NX1 and NX500 firmware updates

Samsung has released firmware updates for the NX1 and the NX500, bringing the NX1 up to firmware version 1.41 and the NX500 to firmware version 1.12. Both updates fix a Bluetooth issue that arises when pairing the cameras with smartphones running Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The NX500 update changelog advises users to update the camera firmware together with the Samsung Camera Manager App.

Samsung has all but backed out of the digital camera market. Its flagship NX1 was discontinued late last year, though the NX500 remains in stock for the time being. While a question mark remains over exactly what long term support for Samsung camera owners looks like, at least for now the manufacturer will continue to support the latest version of Android’s OS.

Sigma offers part replacement to prevent lenses scratching Pentax K-1

Lens manufacturer Sigma has announced that it will replace parts on its Pentax-mount lenses that are known to scratch the new Pentax K-1 full-frame camera. The company says that certain lenses that it produces clash with the shape of the upper part of the mount on the K-1 and that using one of the listed lenses ‘could leave a small scratch on part of the camera body’.

Sigma has issued a list of current and past lenses that it knows create a problem, and advises Pentax K-1 owners not to use them until the repair is carried out. Three current lenses are included in the advisory: the 30mm F1.4 DC HSM Art, 35mm F1.4 DG HSM Art and APO 50-500mm F4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM. A time scale for the repair service to begin has yet to be announced though.

The company also says that some of its lenses are not recognized automatically by the K-1, and that users will need to manually enter whether the lens is designed for full frame or APS-C sensors via the camera’s menu system. The announcement makes no mention of whether this issue will also be fixed.

Use of Pentax mount SIGMA interchangeable lenses when attached to the Pentax K-1

We have found that some SIGMA interchangeable lenses for Pentax mount could leave a small scratch on part of the camera body when they are attached to the PENTAX K-1, released by RICOH IMAGING COMPANY, LTD. on April 28th, 2016. In this circumstance, please do not use the following lenses for Pentax mount on the PENTAX K-1.

We are planning to provide a repair service to replace a part of the lens for this issue. We will make a further announcement on our website when specific details, such as the service period, are finalized.

Phenomenon
When some SIGMA interchangeable lenses for Pentax mount are attached to the PENTAX K-1, the upper part of the mount can be scratched.

This phenomenon is due to the interference with the shape of the upper part of the mount on the PENTAX K-1 camera body and it does not occur to any cameras other than PENTAX K-1.

Lexar offers microSD dongle with an Apple Lightning connector

Lexar has launched a microSD-to-Apple Lightning reader for transferring files from a media card directly to an iPhone or iPad. The dongle works in conjunction with an iOS file management app, and is designed to make file transfers possible from other devices, whether a camera, drone, or another phone at fast speeds via a wired connection.

“Users no longer need to wait until they’re back in front of their main computer at home or in the office to upload content captured on-the-go,’ said Lexar product marketing manager Steffi Ho. According to the company, the card reader’s Lightning connector can fit in ‘most iOS cases.’

The microSD reader is priced at $ 41.99; though it officially launched for purchase today, Lexar’s website still lists it as ‘coming soon.’

Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX85 offers 16MP sensor with no AA filter, redesigned shutter mechanism

Panasonic has just announced its Lumix DMC-GX85 (GX80 outside of North America), a less expensive sibling to the Lumix GX8 that features a 16MP Live MOS sensor with no AA filter, a redesigned shutter mechanism, and 5-axis Dual IS. Panasonic claims the removal of the anti-aliasing filter boosts fine detail resolution by 10%, and an electromagnet-driven shutter mechanism aims to reduce blur from shutter shock – an issue we noted when we reviewed the GX8. 

The GX85 offers ‘Dual IS’, which combines its 5-axis in-body stabilization with in-lens OIS, offering up to 4.5 stops of shake reduction. That’s an update to the GX8’s 4-axis in-body system. Naturally, the GX85 carries 4K/UHD 30p video shooting and all of the related photography features, including 4K Photo and Post Focus. Speaking of focus, the GX85 offers the same ‘Depth from Defocus’ system that really impressed us on the GX8.

The GX85 provides a fixed 2764K-dot equivalent electronic viewfinder, and its 3″ 1.04M-dot touch screen monitor tilts up by 80° and downward by 45°. Built-in Wi-Fi and a new L. Monochrome photo style mode are also included.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX85 will go on sale at the end of May for $ 799/£599 with a 12-32mm F3.5-5.6 collapsible kit zoom. UK shoppers will also have body-only (£509) and or a bundle with the 12-32mm and 35-100mm lenses (£729) options.

1. 4K capability bringing the evolution in videography/photography – 4K video and 4K PHOTO

Taking advantage of the high speed signal readout capability of the sensor and high speed signal processing, the LUMIX GX85 is capable of recording 4K video. Despite its high performance, it boasts superior energy efficiency and the size is kept compact for high mobility. The LUMIX GX85 records stunningly smooth, high-resolution 4K video in 3840 x 2160 at 30p or 24p in addition to the full-HD 1,920 x 1,080 60p (60 Hz) videos with practical full-time AF. 

Thanks to this 4K technology, users can enjoy 4K PHOTO which users can capture the fleeting photo opportunities at 30 fps by extracting the most appealing frame. Three exclusive modes are available to choose from depending on the situation; 4K Burst, 4K Burst (Start/Stop) and 4K Pre-burst. All these function in 4K PHOTO enable saving pictures in 8-megapixel equivalent high resolution.

The LUMIX GX85 comes with the Post Focus function that enables users to select an in-focus area even after shooting. You can get multiple shots with different focus points with a single shutter release to choose from. It is helpful in situations such as macro shooting where severe focusing is required or for changing expressions by changing focused subject. This function has been developed by combining the DFD (Depth From Defocus) auto focus technology that enables measuring the distance to the subject and the 4K technology.  Operation is quite simple and easy – just shoot an image in a Post Focus mode and touch on the point where you want to set focus while playing it back.

In addition, the LUMIX GX85 incorporates the Light Composition function as a new option of 4K PHOTO mode. The camera synthesizes the images by choosing and saving a brighter pixel. This makes it possible to produce a more luxurious, dramatic image of situations such as fireworks or night scenery in camera with ease. 

The LUMIX GX85 also enables 4K Live Cropping in video that yields stable panning or zooming while video recording. In panning shots, you can just set the viewing angle to start and end to get smooth panning imagery without using special equipment such as a slider. When zooming, you can set the after-zoomed viewing angle first, so that the subject can fit perfectly in the frame. Thanks to the digital operation, the imagery of zooming is smooth because it does not physically move the zoom lens. 

* About motion picture recording / 4K Photo recording
– Use a card with SD Speed Class with “Class 4” or higher when recording motion pictures. 
– Use a card with SD Speed Class with “UHS-I UHS Speed Class 3 (U3)” when recording motion pictures with [MP4] in [4K] or [4K PHOTO].
   (SD speed class is the speed standard regarding continuous writing.)
– Recording stops when the continuous recording time exceeds 29 minutes and 59 seconds or the file size exceeds 4GB with [MP4] in [FHD] [HD] [VGA].
– MP4 motion pictures with [MP4] in [4K]:
  – When using an SDHC memory card: You can continue recording without interruption even if the file size exceeds 4 GB, but the motion picture file will be divided and recorded/played back separately.
  – When using an SDXC memory card: You can record a motion picture in a single file.
– When the ambient temperature is high or continuous recording is performed, the camera may stop the recording to protect itself. Wait until the camera cools down.
** For [4K] video output, use an HDMI cable that has the HDMI logo on it, and that is described as”4K compatible”.

2. New 5-Axis Dual I.S. (Image Stabilizer) to be free of blur

The LUMIX GX85 incorporates the new 5-axis Dual I.S.(Image Stabilizer) for more effective suppression of blur. Combining an O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer, 2-axis) and a B.I.S.(Body Image Stabilizer, 5-axis), the 5-axis Dual I.S. compensates for larger movement which was conventionally uncontrollable, making it possible to use 4-step slower shutter speed*1. By making the most of both O.I.S and B.I.S., it is highly beneficial not only in wide angle but also in telephoto and in the adverse situations such as at nighttime or with one-hand shooting.

The 5-axis Dual I.S. works in both photo and motion picture recording including 4K video. Panasonic LUMIX G DSLM (Digital Single Lens Mirrorless) Cameras offer a wide variety of digital interchangeable lenses and most of them will comply with this 5-axis dual I.S. in LUMIX GX85*2 and the B.I.S. compensates for the camera movement even when a lens without O.I.S. is used.

3. The high image quality with real-to-life detail and impressive color reproduction

The LUMIX GX85 lets users shoot vibrant, true-to-life high quality images with excellent resolution, high contrast and impressive color reproduction. Removing the Low Pass Filter, the limiting resolution is improved by approx.10%* while detecting high frequency components to suppress generation of moiré by the Venus Engine, is designed for the GX85.The Venus Engine reproduces vibrant, impressive color such as clear sky by dividing hue, saturation, and luminosity, and finely adjusts them separately. Taking advantage of this fine tuning capability, LUMIX GX85 enables users to choose a preset of contrast, sharpness, saturation and noise reduction as they choose according to the shooting subject in Photo Style. Notably, L Monochrome is a new option added to the Photo Style, making it possible to shoot impressive monochrome photo with deep black and rich gradation like that of B/W film.

The combination of the Digital Live MOS Sensor and the Venus Engine achieves clear image rendering with minimum noise even in low-lit situations and at max. ISO 25,600.

The LUMIX GX85 adopts an electromagnetic drive in the shutter unit. The shock caused by the movement of shutter diaphragm is dramatically reduced by approx.90% in comparison with a conventional spring-powered shutter units. 

4. High speed response and practical AF/MF options

The Contrast AF in theGX85 achieves even higher speed and higher precision focusing with digital signal communication at max. 240 fps. Furthermore, the DFD (Depth From Defocus) technology*1 calculates the distance to the subject by evaluating 2 images with different sharpness level while consulting the data of optical characteristics of the current lens. As a result, the GX85 achieves ultra-high speed AF of approx.0.07 sec*2 and high speed burst shooting at 8 fps (AFS) / 6 fps (AFC) to capture fast moving subject in-focus.

The Low Light AF makes it possible to set focus on the subject more precisely even without AF assist lamp in extremely low-lit situations to -4EV, which is as dark as moonlight. Plus, the GX85 integrates Starlight AF which allows users to shoot a star in the sky at night with auto focus. This can be achieved by accurate calculation of contrast value in a smaller AF zone.

A total of 49 focus detection areas offers more flexible composition together with Custom Multi AF mode in which users can freely select the blocks to focus out of the 49 in the focusing area. In addition to the conventional Face Recognition AF, the GX85 incorporates Face / Eye Detection AF which automatically sets focus right on the eye of human face. With the Pinpoint AF, users can magnify the target area to set precise focus.

5. Intuitive control for operational comfort

The GX85 integrates a LVF (Live View Finder) with 2764K-dot equivalent high resolution and approx.100% color reproduction*. This 16:9 Wide Screen LVF boasts approx.1.39x / 0.7x (35mm camera equiv.) magnification and 100% field of view. It comes with the Eye Sensor and the Eye Sensor AF and starts auto focusing by just looking into the LVF not to miss the shooting opportunity. 

The 3.0-inch large, approx.1040K-dot high resolution static-type touch monitor has approx. 100% of field of view. It tilts up by 80-degrees and down by 45-degrees which enables shooting in either high or low angle even easier. 

To further enhance the controllability, the GX85 comes with thick, solid grip for stable holding even in one hand. The front/rear dual dial system enables direct setting – for example, users can adjust white balance with a front dial and set ISO with a rear dial while choosing the shutter speed or seeing the noise effect, which is helpful in complex lighting situations.

Macphun offers Aurora HDR Pro 3-month payment plan

Macphun has announced a new 3-month payment plan for Aurora HDR Pro, the image editing application for Mac OS X it launched in November. Rather than requiring the full $ 99 USD price at the time of purchase, the payment plan allows users to pay $ 33 per month for three months, while still gaining immediate access to the software license.

According to Macphun, Aurora HDR has been downloaded more than 150,000 times since its launch. The payment plan doesn’t involve a subscription and does not charge interest. The company’s ‘bonus of the month’ gift to customers is also provided to users who opt for the 3-month installment.

The payment plan is now available through the Aurora HDR website.
