Canon offers new developer kits for EOS bodies and PowerShot SX70 HS

05 Jan

Canon users who want to develop applications for their camera will be able to do so with new expanded SDK and API kits just announced by the company. The release updates the existing EOS Digital SDK (Software Development Kit) and introduces a new Camera Control API (Application Programming Interface) that is compatible with the new PowerShot SX70 HS bridge camera.

The kits allow users to develop their own methods for triggering and controlling some settings of compatible cameras, and in the case of the SX70 HS for controlling the powered zoom lens. As the new Camera Control API ‘features an agnostic operating system’ it can be operated from almost any platform, so will be compatible with a wide range of control devices from smartphones to desk top computers. The current ED SDK is only compatible with Windows and Mac environments.

The new version of the ED SDK, that adds the SX70 HS to the list of compatible cameras, is available now on the Canon Developers Website, while the Camera Control API will be released in March.

Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 855 chipset offers faster depth sensing, 4K HDR video at 60fps

06 Dec

Qualcomm has announced its new flagship mobile chipset that we should expect to see in most 2019 high-end Android smartphones, including the Samsung Galaxy S10.

From an imaging point of view the most interesting news is an upgraded Spectra image signal processor (ISP) that is taking over some tasks that previously have been performed by CPU, GPU and DSP in conjunction. For example, the ISP can process depth mapping at a frequency of 60 frames per second. This should be useful for real-time object attenuation applications but could also help improve simulated bokeh effects in video footage.

In addition the new ISP enables 4K HDR video capture at 60 fps and Qualcomm also claims the processor generally needs only about 25 percent of the power for the same task than previous variants.

For general computing the new chipset’s 7nm process is expected to deliver improved performance while yielding noticeably better battery life then the current Snapdragon 845. The Snapdragon 855 should also bring performance improvements to AI-applications. Qualcomm says the new chipset delivers “up to three times the AI performance compared to the previous generation mobile platform”.

In terms of connectivity the 855 won’t come with 5G but instead use Qualcomm’s new X24 LTE modem which is capable of theoretical download speeds up of to 2Gbps. However, device manufacturers will have the option to add an X50 5G modem to their packages if they they want to include 5G connectivity in their Snapdragon 855-powered products.

The essential pro feature that no mirrorless camera offers

27 Oct

In a low-light situation with a split-second to focus and capture the moment, the flashgun’s AF illuminator was essential. Mirrorless cameras tend not to offer this feature and their AF systems aren’t so good in low light that they don’t need it.

Mirrorless cameras have caught up with DSLRs in almost every measurable respect, yet there’s still one feature that’s essential for some professionals that every one of them lacks: flash AF illumination.

The failure to offer an AF illuminator target means mirrorless can’t compete with the best DSLRs in some shooting situations

Wedding and event photographers in particular will recognize the benefit of the AF assist target projected by flashguns and some flash commander units, yet no mirrorless camera maker implements this feature, even on their highest-end models. There are some technical reasons why they omit the feature, but this doesn’t negate the need for it.

‘IR’ illuminators on flashguns aren’t solely emitting infra-red: they also emit visible red light, or you wouldn’t be able to see their telltale grid pattern

It won’t affect everybody’s day-to-day photography, but the universal failure to offer some sort of AF illuminator target for mirrorless cameras remains a major shortcoming and means mirrorless can’t compete with the best DSLRs in some shooting situations.

There are technical justifications for why they don’t: DSLR autofocus sensors can be sensitive to infra-red light, whereas mirrorless cameras aren’t. Because mirrorless cameras focus using their main imaging sensor, any IR has to be filtered-out to avoid skewing the colors in your images. But the AF illuminators on flashguns aren’t solely emitting infra-red: they also emit lots of visible red light, otherwise you wouldn’t be able to see the telltale red grid they project.

Note that the ‘IR’ illuminator in this instance is projecting a visible red target and, crucially, a target that provides a pattern for the camera’s AF system to bite onto.

Another complication is that phase-detection pixels live behind the colored filters that allow most cameras to interpret color in the scene, so may not even see any red light. A PDAF element behind a blue filter won’t see any red light and one behind a green filter will only see a very small amount. But even this shouldn’t be insurmountable: Canon’s Dual Pixel AF means every pixel (including the red-sensitive ones) is a PDAF pixel and, if it came down to it, the manufacturers could offer versions of their flashguns that emit a color that their mirrorless AF systems can see.

If mirrorless cameras are going to displace DSLRs for wedding and event photography, manufacturers need to find a way

Most mirrorless cameras have their own built-in AF illuminators but they’re not nearly as powerful as the off-board lamps on flashguns. Also, they tend to be bright, uniform orange or green lamps which are visually distracting, easily blocked by hands or large lenses and which miss one of the key properties of off-board illuminators: a grid pattern. This grid pattern effectively creates some hard-edges for the AF system to bite onto, even if you’re shooting something that may not have enough inherent contrast to easily focus on. You know, like a white wedding dress in low light.

If mirrorless cameras are going to displace DSLRs for wedding and event photography, manufacturers need to find a way, even if it involves selling (or modifying) flash units that emit a faint green or blue grid pattern. Or doing what Godox does with its X1T command units: firing its red target, just as it would for DSLRs, because in many cases this is better than nothing.

21 Sep

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_1104815788″,”galleryId”:”1104815788″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”isMobile”:false}) });

Canon has introduced its latest superzoom camera, the PowerShot SX70 HS. Its equivalent focal range of 21-1365mm hasn’t changed, but the sensor, image processor, viewfinder and video capabilities have been greatly improved.

The SX70 has a 20.3MP BSI-CMOS sensor paired with Canon’s latest Digic 8 processor. The lens remains at 65X (almost half that of Nikon’s new P1000,) with a maximum aperture range of F3.4-6.5. The new image processor has improved the effectiveness of the camera’s image stabilization system according to Canon, which can now reduce shake by up to five stops. The Digic 8 also brings along support for Canon’s CR3 Raw format, which has smaller file sizes than the previous CR2 format.

While the design of the camera isn’t radically different from that of the SX60, there are three notable changes. First, the electronic viewfinder is now OLED with 2.36 million dots, compared to LCD with 922k dots. There’s also an eye sensor that wasn’t present on the SX60. Second, there’s now a zoom switch on the lens barrel. The final change is a ‘deprovement’: the hot shoe on the SX60 is gone on the SX70.

The SX70 HS can shoot bursts at 10 fps with focus locked or 5.7 fps with continuous AF. UHD 4K video can be captured at 30p with a bit rate of 120Mbps. The SX70 continues to offer a microphone socket. The camera’s wireless connectivity includes Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

The PowerShot SX70 HS will ship at the end of November for $ 549.99.

Nikon offers optional Dot Sight accessory to aid telephoto photography

27 Aug

Alongside the official unveiling of the Nikkor 500mm F5.6E PF ED, Nikon has announced an optional Dot Sight accessory to help telephoto photographers better track moving subjects. The DF-M1 makes it easier to aim a super-telephoto lens like the 500mm at a fast-moving, distant subject by presenting a wider field-of-view and an illuminated dot target that moves relative to the lens. NIKON RELEASES THE AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR, A FIXED FOCAL LENTH SUPER-TELEPHOTO LENS COMPATIBLE WITH THE NIKON FX FORMAT

Delivers Exceptional Agility that Makes Hand-Held Super-Telephoto Photography Enjoyable, as Well as Offering Superior Optical Performance and Functionality

MELVILLE, NY (AUGUST 23, 2018 AT 1:01 A.M. EDT) –Nikon Inc. is pleased to announce the release of the AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR, a fixed focal length super-telephoto lens compatible with Nikon FX-format digital SLR cameras.

The AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR is a high-performance, FX-format, super-telephoto lens that supports 500 mm focal length. The adoption of a Phase Fresnel (PF) lens element has significantly reduced the size and weight of the lens, making hand-held super-telephoto photography easier and more enjoyable.

With a maximum diameter of 106 mm and length of 237 mm, the AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR, which weighs 1,460g (roughly the same weight as the AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR) is significantly lighter than previous500mm lenses which can typically weigh up to more than 3,000g. The AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR is designed with consideration to dust- and drip- resistance, which in addition to the fluorine coat applied to the front lens surface, allows greater agility when shooting.

The use of one PF lens element and three ED glass elements enables extremely sharp and detailed rendering that is compatible with high pixel-count digital cameras. In addition, the materials used in the new PF lens element have been developed effectively to reduce PF (diffraction) flare, allowing light sources to be reproduced in near-original colors. In combination with Nikon’s coating technologies, such as the Nano Crystal Coat, effective in controlling ghost and flare, extremely clear images are achieved.

AF speed has been increased by making lens elements in the focusing group lighter. The AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR is equipped with a VR mechanism that offers camera shake compensation equivalent to a 4.01-stop increase in shutter speed. The SPORT VR mode that has been adopted is especially effective when photographing fast-moving and unpredictable subjects such as wild birds, or in scenes such as sporting events. The stabilization of the image displayed in the viewfinder is also an effective feature for recording movies.

Additionally, the use of the Mount Adapter FTZ will allow the lens to be used with mirrorless cameras Nikon Z 7 and Nikon Z 6, also announced today. Users will be able to enjoy super-telephoto shooting at the 500 mm focal length with a system that is even more compact than ever before.

We are also planning to release the Dot Sight DF-M1, an accessory that is highly effective with super-telephoto photography. With super-telephoto shooting, a narrow field of view in the viewfinder tends to be made visible – making it easy to lose track of the subject. The Dot Sight DF-M1 makes it easy to keep track of the intended subject within the frame, even if the subject exhibits sudden movement.

PF (Phase Fresnel) Lens Elements
The PF (Phase Fresnel) lens, developed by Nikon, effectively compensates chromatic aberration, utilizing the photo diffraction phenomenon2. It provides superior chromatic aberration compensation performance when combined with a normal glass lens. Compared to many general camera lenses that employ an optical system using the photorefractive phenomenon, a remarkably compact and lightweight body can be attained with fewer lens elements.

Primary Features

  • Significantly smaller and lighter with the adoption of a Phase Fresnel (PF) lens element, making 500 mm hand-held super-telephoto photography easier and more enjoyable
  • Designed with consideration to dust- and drip-resistance; fluorine coat applied to front lens surface, effectively repelling water droplets, grease, and dirt
  • Adoption of one PF lens element and three ED glass elements for extremely sharp and detailed rendering, compatible with high pixel-count digital cameras
  • Optical performance that is not compromised with the use of the TC-14E III AF-S teleconverter
  • Materials used in the new PF lens element effectively control PF (diffraction) flare
  • Ghost and flare effectively suppressed with the adoption of the Nano Crystal Coat, enabling clear images
  • AF speed increased by making lens elements in the focusing group lighter
  • Equipped with a VR mechanism that offers camera shake compensation equivalent to a 4.01-stop increase in shutter speed, in two modes: NORMAL and SPORT
  • Electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism adopted for extremely precise aperture control

Optional Accessories
We will release the Dot Sight DF-M1 (available separately), an accessory that is highly effective with super-telephoto photography. This accessory makes it easy to keep track of the intended subject, even if the subject exhibits sudden movement.

Price and Availability
The AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR will be available September 13 for the suggested retail prices (SRP) of $ 3599.95*. The Dot Sight DF-M1 will be available for $ 174.95 SRP*. For more information on these and other Nikon products, please visit www.nikonusa.com.

Apple launches service program for MacBooks affected by keyboard issues, offers free repairs

25 Jun
RawPixel/Unsplash

Apple has launched a new service program for select MacBook and MacBook Pros potentially affected by a keyboard issue that results in sticky, unresponsive keys and repeated characters when typing.

The service program comes after three separate class action lawsuits were filed against the Cupertino company for issues related to MacBook and MacBook Pro keyboards.

In a statement provided to 9to5Mac by an Apple spokesperson, the program ‘covers a small percentage of keyboards in certain MacBook and MacBook Pro models which may exhibit one or more of the following behaviors: letters or characters that repeat unexpectedly or don’t appear when pressed or keys that feel “sticky” or aren’t responding in a consistent manner.’

If believe your MacBook or MacBook Pro is being affected by the above issues, the first step is to check whether or not your model is part of the service program. To do this, go into the Apple (?) menu in the upper-left-hand corner of your Mac and select ‘About This Mac.’ Below are the eligible models:

  • MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2015)
  • MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2016)
  • MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, 2017)
  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, Two Thunderbolt 3 Ports)
  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Two Thunderbolt 3 Ports)
  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports)
  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports)
  • MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2016)
  • MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2017)

If your MacBook or MacBook Pro is one of the above models and is experiencing keyboard issues, the next step is to set up the repair process. You can have the repair done at an Apple authorized service provider, make an appointment at an Apple retail store, or mail in your computer to Apple’s repair center.

Before any repairs are made, Apple will verify whether anything needs to be fixed. If it does, Apple will ‘service [the] eligible MacBook and MacBook Pro keyboards, free of charge.’ The repairs will consist of either replacing the affected keys or potentially replacing the keyboard as a whole if required.

You can find more details on how to get your device repaired by going to Apple’s documentation page detailing the service program.

Fujifilm X-T100 offers large EVF and phase-detect AF for $600

24 May

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_0036253573″,”galleryId”:”0036253573″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”isMobile”:false}) });

Fujifilm has announced its latest X-series camera, the X-T100. The camera takes the innards of the entry-level X-A5, including its 91-point phase-detect AF system, and adds a fully articulating LCD and high resolution OLED electronic viewfinder (borrowed from the X-T20).

As with the X-A5, the X-T100’s 24MP APS-C CMOS sensor uses a traditional Bayer color filter, rather than the X-Trans filter found on pricer X-series cameras. The X-T100 has the usual Fujifilm feature set, including the much-loved Film Simulation Modes.

The camera can shoot continuously at 6 fps and can capture 4K UHD video, albeit at a why-did-they-bother 15 fps. Battery life is rated at an impressive 430 shots per charge. For sharing photos the X-T100 includes Bluetooth to speed up the Wi-Fi connection process.

The X-T100 is available with or without the Fujinon XC 15-45mm F3.5-5.6 OIS PZ lens, priced at $ 599 and $ 699, respectively. It will be available in mid-June in your choice of ‘dark silver,’ ‘champagne gold’ and black.

FUJIFILM INTRODUCES THE NEW FUJIFILM X-T100 TO X SERIES MIRRORLESS CAMERA LINEUP

A stylish interchangeable lens camera featuring automatic scene recognition, a three-way tilting touchscreen and Bluetooth® technology

Valhalla, N.Y., May 24, 2018FUJIFILM North America Corporation today announced the debut of its new FUJIFILM X-T100, a compact interchangeable lens camera with a sleek design. Available in Black, Dark Silver, and Champagne Gold, the new X-T100 offers a host of features including a high magnification electronic viewfinder, horizontal tilting rear LCD screen, built-in Bluetooth® technology for quick and easy image sharing and an extended battery life allowing up to 430 frames per charge. In addition, the X-T100 weighs just 448g with anodized coating on aluminum top cover, delivering a simultaneously retro and luxury feel.

“We are excited to announce the X-T100 as the latest addition to the X Series lineup,” said Yuji Igarashi, General Manager of the Electronic Imaging Division & Optical Devices Division at FUJIFILM North America Corporation. “This mirrorless camera is a perfect fit for photographers looking for an easy to use, compact and versatile camera, offering excellent image quality with a variety of enhanced features with the familiar design of previous FUJIFILM X-T series cameras.”

Equipped with a powerful 24.2 megapixel APS-C sensor and high-speed image processing engine, the X-T100 is compatible with the full X Mount lens lineup of 26 FUJINON high quality lenses which cover focal lengths from 15mm to 1200mm (35mm equivalent). Combining Fujifilm’s renowned outstanding image quality with the company’s proprietary color reproduction technology, the X-T100 is stylish, portable, and highly versatile – making it the ideal companion for everyday photography.

Fast Autofocus, Automatic Functions, and Sleek Design Offer Ease of Use

The X-T100 uses a Phase Detection Autofocus system and algorithm originally designed for flagship X Series models, to ensure quick and precise capture of images even when photographing fast-moving subjects. Adding to its ease of use, the camera also features an advanced SR+ Auto shooting mode that is capable of detecting the subject and scene simultaneously, and selecting the optimum settings accordingly to provide intelligent, fully-automatic shooting. This mode is perfect for situations where it is difficult to select the right settings, or when a series of quick shots is what the photographer is after.

The X-T100 features a three-inch touch panel display to make composition easy. Featuring

1.04-million dots for a crystal clear view of the action, this screen swings out horizontally to almost 180 degrees. Not only does this help to compose shots at awkward angles, it also makes it possible to take selfies or shoot video blogs with a clear view of what’s in the frame.

Although the X-T100 has the look of a timeless classic, the camera body weighs just 448g with battery and memory card, so it’s small and light enough to accompany photographers wherever they go. It also comes with a shoulder strap and a detachable grip for added security and comfort.

Artistic Expressions for Everyday Creativity

The X-T100 offers 11 variations of unique FUJIFILM Film Simulation modes and 17 variations of Advanced Filters—all of which provide photographers with the ability to add greater artistic expression to images. Setting adjustments on the X-T100 is quick and easy with one-step operation that is made possible via the function and exposure compensation dials on top of the body, and the touch-and-flick function available on the rear LCD monitor.

Not only can the X-T100 produce breathtaking stills, but with 4K and the option to shoot in slow motion, it’s great for video too. Full HD movies can be shot at speeds of up to 59.94fps for super-smooth footage. To help maximize sound quality, the X-T100 is equipped with a microphone port so videographers can record audio from a compatible external microphone (sold separately).

Bluetooth® Technology for Quick and Seamless Image Transfer

The X-T100 features the latest Bluetooth® low energy technology, allowing users to quickly and seamlessly transfer images using the free “FUJIFILM Camera Remote” app. This function enables constant image transfer, even while in shooting mode, so images can be uploaded and shared within moments.
