Fujifilm X-T200 is lighter, faster, offers 4K/30p and costs $800

Fujifilm has announced the X-T200, boasting a wide range of improvements over its X-T100 predecessor. The X-T200 uses a 24MP Bayer sensor like the T100 did, but uses copper rather than aluminum wiring, which provides 3.5x faster readout and had allowed Fujifilm to extend the high ISO by one stop, to 25600.

The X-T200 is an altogether lighter camera than the X-T100, weighing in at 370g / 0.8lb. Where the T100 offered very little in the way of a grip, the X-T200 provides a prominent, protruding grip for more comfortable hand-holding. The T200’s touchscreen is larger (3.5″ vs. 3″) and inherits a more touch-friendly menu from the X-A7.

Fujifilm promises autofocus improvements as well, including the latest eye detection algorithms. The X-T200 offers more phase-detect pixels (140k versus 16k), better PDAF coverage (across the whole sensor, rather than a central 25%) and more selectable autofocus points (425 vs. 91) than its predecessor. Burst shooting is improved to 8 fps (compared to 6 fps).

Another welcome improvement is the ability to shoot un-cropped 4K video at 29.97 and 24p, compared to the T100’s 4K/15p. Slow motion 1080/120p is also now an option, and a video setting has been added to the mode dial.

The Fujifilm X-T200 will ship in late February for $ 700 body-only or $ 800 with XC 15-45mm F3.5-5.6 OIS PZ kit lens.

Touch Your Way to the Perfect Image
X-T200 is equipped with a vari-angle 3.5-inch, 16:9 Aspect Ratio widescreen LCD touch- screen that can be opened and closed between 0 to 180 degrees and rotated between – 90 to +180 degrees. It also provides an intuitive and responsive control over the camera’s features and functionality and can be used to adjust a variety of settings, like brightness, background blur, film simulation effects, and image aspect ratios.

Focus on the Faces and the Moment
The use of on-sensor phase detection pixels across the sensor and a new AF algorithm means focus can be achieved quickly and in a variety of conditions. The updated Face/Eye Detection AF makes focusing on individuals or groups of people quick and easy. This is even possible when the camera’s LCD monitor is flipped out and you want to take a selfie. Automated functions, like Main Subject Recognition, allow the camera to be set to recognize and track a main subject within the frame. These features, combined with a burst mode of 8fps, allow you to see, frame, and make images of those important moments with those important people.

Techart releases TZC-01, an EF-to-Z adapter that offers full autofocus, image stabilization support

In June 2019, camera accessory manufacturer Techart released its TZE-01 adapter, which allowed Nikon Z mirrorless camera users to mount Sony E-mount lenses to their systems without losing the ability to use autofocus. Now, Techart is back at it again with the announcement of the TZC-01, an adapter that makes it possible to mount and use autofocus Canon EF lenses on Nikon Z mirrorless cameras.

Techart says the TZC-01 will work with EF-mount lenses from Canon, Sigma, Tamron, Tokina and Zeiss. In addition to ‘native’ autofocus performance, the lenses will also maintain aperture control, stabilization features and EXIF data. In total, Techart lists 62 lenses it says are proven compatible with the adapter:

Techart has also included a dedicated function button that lets you save a focusing distance to recall with the press of the button and an accompanying lens dock that will let you upgrade the firmware of the adapter.

Plugable´s new docking station offers Thunderbolt/USB-C compatibility and 100W power delivery

If you’re using a laptop out on the road but want the luxury of a workstation setup back at base, a docking station is the way to go.

Plugable has now launched its latest TBT3-UDZ model which works with any USB-C or Thunderbolt equipped laptop on the market. It allows for the connection of up to two additional 4K displays via either HDMI or Display Port, without using any external adapters. Plugable says its new model is the first Thunderbolt 3 docking station to offer this functionality.

Thanks to a total of 14 ports, for video, audio, SD/microSD and ethernet, you should not have any trouble connecting multiple input devices or peripherals. The TBT3-UDZ is built around the Intel Titan Ridge chipset which enables dual Thunderbolt/USB-3 compatibility and makes it an interesting option for those using multiple types of laptops.

At 100W power delivery is the highest charging wattage to be implemented in the Plugable lineup line of docking stations which, according to the company, makes the TBT3-UDZ an ideal choice for users of some of Apple’s latest laptops, such as the 16″ MacBook Pro, which come with 96W chargers. The Plugable TBT3-UDZ will be available for $ 299 in spring 2020.

Panasonic’s new Lumix S Pro 70-200mm F2.8 offers up to 7 stops of shake reduction

Panasonic has officially unveiled the Lumix S Pro 70-200mm F2.8 for its full-frame L-mount system, adding a fast-aperture, stabilized telephoto zoom to the native lens lineup. The lens will go on sale early next year for $ 2600.

The 70-200mm F2.8 includes optical stabilization, which can be combined with in-camera ‘Dual IS 2’ system for a total of 7 stops of shake reduction. It’s dust and water-resistant, and offers a minimum focus distance of about 1m (3ft).

The lens weighs 1570g (3.5lbs) and accepts 82mm filters. Optical construction comprises 22 total elements in 17 groups, including one aspherical, three Extra-low Dispersion and two Ultra Extra-Low Dispersion lenses to reduce chromatic aberration.

The Panasonic Lumix S Pro 70-200mm F2.8 will arrive alongside the also-announced 16-35mm F4 in January at a price of $ 2600.

Designed and developed for professional field shooting, the LUMIX S PRO 70-200mm F2.8 O.I.S. (S-E70200) uses 2 UED (Ultra Extra-low Dispersion) lenses, 3 ED (Extra-low Dispersion) lenses and optimum alignment comprising 22 elements in 17 groups, effectively suppressing both axial chromatic aberration and chromatic aberration of magnification. Astigmatism is also corrected with an aspherical lens, achieving high resolving performance. Adoption of a double focus system suppresses fluctuation of aberration even at close distances, which results in high descriptive performance from the center to the corners over the entire zoom range despite its large aperture.

Covering from 70mm to 200mm, the use of a Teleconverter allows a maximum 280mm (1.4x, with DMW-STC14) and 400mm (2x, with DMW-STC20) super telephoto shooting*1, with maximum 480 fps focus control for high-speed, high-precision auto focus. The O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) in the lens complies with the camera’s Body I.S. and the 5-Axis Dual I.S. 2*2 makes it possible to use a 7-stop slower shutter speed*3. Adoption of a focus clutch mechanism enables instant AF/MF switching and accurate manual focusing.

The constant F2.8 large aperture provides smooth defocus gradation from the focus peak to the neighboring area of the image to achieve a beautiful bokeh effect as well as a rich perspective. The LUMIX S PRO 70-200mm F2.8 O.I.S. also excels in video recording performance with a mechanism that suppresses focus breathing, which was a fatal problem in all interchangeable lenses designed for still image photography.

The rugged, dust/splash-resistant*4 design withstands use under harsh conditions even at 10 degrees below zero for high mobility. The filter size is 82 mm, with an 11-blade circular aperture diaphragm.

LUMIX S PRO 16-35mm F4 (S-R1635)

The LUMIX S PRO 16-35mm F4 (S-R1635) is a versatile wide zoom lens boasts high descriptive performance in both photo shooting and video recording.

Comprising 12 elements in 9 groups, the use of 3 aspherical lenses, an ED (Extra-low Dispersion) lens and a UHR (Ultra-High Refractive Index) lens and the optimum alignment achieves high MTF performance despite its compact size and light weight. It boasts stunningly high resolution toward the corners even at wide open as well as a beautiful bokeh, suppressing double line bokeh and vignetting.

A double-magnet linear motor is integrated for the AF actuator, featuring high power despite its small size, achieving a maximum 480 fps high-speed sensor drive. This realizes fast, high-precision AF to ensure that photo opportunities are never missed. Like the 70-200mm F2.8 O.I.S. (S-E70200), the 16-35mm F4 (S-R1635) adopts a focus clutch mechanism, enabling instant AF/MF switching and accurate manual focusing, as well as excels in video recording performance thanks to a mechanism that suppresses focus breathing.

It is also rugged dust/splash-resistant, *4 withstanding harsh conditions even at 10 degrees below zero for high mobility. The filter size is 77 mm, with a 9-blade circular aperture diaphragm.

Canon’s entry-level EOS M200 offers eye detection and 4K video

Canon has introduced the EOS M200, an entry-level mirrorless camera. It’s a fairly modest upgrade to one of our favorite cameras, the EOS M100. Its new Digic 8 processor allows for Dual Pixel AF with eye detection, heavily cropped 4K/24p video and improved battery life.

Everything else is the same as before: the M200 has a 24MP APS-C sensor, compact body with a selfie-friendly touchscreen and an easy-to-use interface.

Huawei’s Mate 30 Pro offers quad-camera array, 4K60 video, cinematic bokeh and more

Today, Huawei unveiled the Mate 30 Pro at a launch event in Munich, Germany. The device is Huawei’s latest flagship and much like Apple’s presentation last week, there was a strong emphasis on the imaging capabilities of the device.

At the heart of the Mate 30 Pro smartphones is the Kirin 990 processor, a chipset that will come in 4G and 5G versions for various markets. This marks the first time we’ve seen the Kirin 990 in a device and carries on the trend of Huawei putting its latest, most advanced chipset in its Mate series smartphones.

The screen on the Mate 30 Pro is a 6.53-inch curved OLED ‘Horizon’ display with a resolution of 2,400 x 1,176 pixels. The ‘Horizon’ nickname refers to the wrap-around screen, which covers the edges of the device and serves as a means of changing settings via virtual buttons on the sides of the device.

On the imaging front, the Mate 30 Pro feature a Leica-branded camera unit on the rear of the devices that features four cameras: a 40-megapixel super-wide-angle camera with an F1.8 aperture and a 1/1.7-inch sensor (17mm 35mm equivalent), a wide-angle image-stabilized 40-megapixel wide-angle camera with an F1.6 aperture and 1/1.7-inch sensor (27mm 35mm equivalent), an image-stabilized 8-megapixel 3x telephoto camera with an F2.4 aperture (80mm 35mm equivalent) as well as a time-of-flight (ToF) camera for improved depth-sensing.

Considering the image processing capabilities of the Kirin 990 chipset, it shouldn’t come as a surprise the Mate 30 Pro will feature impressive photo and video capabilities. In addition to 4K video at 60 frames per second, the phones can also capture slo-mo 1080p video at up to 960 fps and 720p video at up to 7,680 fps. Huawei also showed off a 4K HDR+ time-lapse function with up to 12-hours of recording as well as a real-time ‘cinematic bokeh’ mode for video.

The front-facing selfie camera is a whopping 32-megapixels and will work with a number of AR photo and video features within the operating system (OS) and third-party applications, including new gesture-control functionality.

Speaking of the operating system, the Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro both run on EMUI 10, a Huawei-created OS that takes a great deal of inspiration from Google’s latest mobile operating system Android 10. After being blacklisted by the United States government over security concerns, Huawei announced it was investing $ 1 billion into its operating system and app ecosystem. The Mate 30 Pro (and the Mate 30, which we’ve addressed below) are the first devices to use this new system.

Tucked inside the device is a 4500mAh battery that supports Huawei SuperCharge up to 40W and wireless charging up to 27W.

The Mate 30 Pro will come in six colors: silver, green, purple, black and two vegan leather options— green and orange. The device is IP68 water- and dust-resistant.

Alongside the flagship Mate 30 Pro, Huawei also announced the more budget-friendly Mate 30. The Mate 30 features a slightly larger display but a decreased resolution of 2,340 x 1,080 pixels. It also swaps out the 40-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera for a 16-megapixel sensor and a slower F2.2 aperture, removes the ToF sensor the Mate 30 Pro offers and shrinks the battery to 4,200mAh.

Video from the camera modules is also limited in the Mate 30; 4K video can still be shot at 60 fps, but slo-mo is limited to 960 fps in 720p. Interestingly enough, Huawei has included a 3.5mm headphone jack in the Mate 30 while ditching it for the Mate 30 Pro, so if you want wired audio, you’re better off with the Mate 30.

Pricing and availability

The Huawei Mate 30 will be available with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage starting at €799. The Mate 30 Pro will feature 8GB of storage as well, but boost internal storage to 256GB starting at €1099 for the 4G model and €1199 for the 5G model. Regional availability was not disclosed as of publishing this article.

Aputure’s new LS 600d prototype LED light offers 600W output

Filmmaking gear company Aputure revealed a prototype version of its upcoming LS 600d LED light at IBC 2019 over the weekend, introducing consumers to a model with an exceptionally bright output at 600W. The light is described as the next step up from Aputure’s 300d II model.

In addition to being shorter and wider than the LS C300II model, which Aputure says makes this model better suited for shooting in tight areas, the LS 600d light’s low-RPM fan is quieter than that of the 300d II despite the greater output.

The model has a 720W draw, while its companion controller can be run off a 48V DC input or four 310W V-mount batteries. Assuming the unit is run off batteries, Adorama reports the LS 600d can run non-stop for up to 1 hour and 45 minutes. The light features a Bowens-style mount, as well, for use with light modifiers and other attachments.

Cinema5D reports that the Aputure LS 600d likewise features three built-in effects: paparazzi, strobe, and lightning. The prototype version of the battery and control box will be slimmed down in the final production version of the device, according to Cinema5D, which reports that Aputure hopes to cut the size in half.

The Aputure LS 600d should be available to purchase in or around February 2020.

Google Photos adds Instagram Stories-style Memories feature, now offers canvas prints

Google Photos is expanding its feature set and has launched Memories, a slideshow feature that works in a similar way as Instagram stories. Memories is designed to highlight special events, such as birthdays, trips and holidays, and let you remember those special moments without having to sift through stacks of duplicate images.

Photos and videos from previous years will be pinned to the top of your gallery for you to browse. Google uses machine learning to curate your Memories and pick the best shots out of many similar ones. Certain people or time periods can be blocked in case you´d rather not be reminded of them, and you can also deactivate the feature completely.

Memories can also be shared with people who appear in them and others. Google says that in the coming months it will make this process even easier. Shared photos will be added to an ongoing, private conversation which should make it easier to keep count of the images you have shared with each other.

In addition, you can now search for text that appears in photographs or screenshots via the standard search function. This could be useful for those who store recipes or other text documents in image format in Google Photos.

U.S. users can now also order both standard photo prints and canvas prints directly from the app. Individual photo prints can be ordered directly through Google Photos and are available to pick up from your local CVS Pharmacy or Walmart that same day at over 11,000 locations. Canvas prints are available in 8x8in, 12x14in, and 16x20in formats and prices start at $ 19.99. The app suggests the best photos to print and the canvas prints will be delivered straight to your home.

Edelkrone now offers a 3D-printed DIY solution for its FlexTILT tripod head

Meet FlexTILT Head 3D, a version of Edelkrone’s popular tripod head that can be 3D-printed and pieced together as a DIY project for a fraction of the cost of Edelkrone’s FlexTILT Head 2.

As we noted in our review, the Edelkrone FlexTILT Head 2 is a wonderful little tool for both videos and stills. The articulating head allows for unique possibilities, especially when paired with dollies and other motion units—but it doesn’t come cheap.

The areas in red are the components that are 3D printed, while the dark grey components and silver screws are those Edelkrone ships to you for $ 29.

Edelkrone’s solution to this is a new line of products called ORTAK. The ORTAK lineup is a co-manufacturing collection that will allow you to 3D print the basic components of Edelkrone products and buy the more integral pieces from Edelkrone at a much lower cost than the fully-produced version.

For the FlexTILT Head 3D, Edelkrone will handle manufacturing the metal components required, including the hex screws, washers, brackets and mounting points, which will sell for $ 29. The body of the FlexTILT Head 3D is up to you to print using the files provided, for free, by Edelkrone on its ORTAK webpage. In addition to a document detailing the building process, Edelkrone has also created a detailed video:

Edelkrone specifically mentions the ORTAK FlexTILT Head 3D has been tested on the Ultimaker S5, Ultimaker 3 and Zaxe 3D printers. However, the STL file Edelkrone provides is more than capable of being printed with other units. Even if you don’t own a 3D printer yourself—or know someone who does—there are other options, including online platforms like Shapeways—not to mention many libraries now offer access to 3D printers at low or no cost if you’re a member.

Regardless of how you get the components printed, it’s safe to say the end result should come out for a good bit less than the $ 149 Edelkrone’s FlexTILT Head 2 retails for.

Fujifilm GFX 100 offers 100 Megapixels, phase-detect AF and 4K video for $10,000

We’ve known about the Fujifilm GFX 100 since it was shown at Photokina last fall, and in about a month, you can get one of your own.

The GFX 100 features a medium-format (44 x 33mm) BSI-CMOS sensor with 102 million effective pixels. The camera is powered by a quad-core X-Processor 4 and offers a native ISO range of 100-12,800 (which expands to 50-102,400) and support for 16-bit Raw files. In-body 5-axis image stabilization reduces shake by up to 5.5 stops according to Fujifilm, and the entire sensor is mounted on springs to reduce shutter shock.

If the GFX 100 uses the Sony IMX 461 sensor, which we strongly suspect it does, we expect significantly improved low light and high ISO performance thanks to the sensor’s dual gain architecture.

The DSLR-styled body is incredibly well-built, with the durability you’d expect from a high-end camera. About the same size as a professional DSLR, the GFX 100 weighs in at 1.4kg (3.1lbs). The camera has a built-in grip for portrait shooting that can hold one or two NP-T125 batteries, for up to 800 shots per charge. The camera has twin SD card slots with UHS-II support, along with ports for USB 3.2 (Type-C), an external mic and headphones, a wired remote, and HDMI.

Fujifilm has put a hybrid autofocus system on the GFX 100, with 3.76 million phase-detect pixels spread across nearly 100% of the frame

The GFX 100 has a dual-hinged, 3.2″ touchscreen LCD with 2.36 million dots that can tilt in both landscape and portrait orientations, just like on the GFX 50S. The camera comes bundled with a removable, tilting OLED EVF that has a whopping 5.76M dots. There are also a pair of OLED displays – one on the top, another below the LCD – that display various camera settings, battery life and shots remaining.

Fujifilm has put a hybrid autofocus system on the GFX 100, with 3.76 million phase-detect pixels spread across nearly 100% of the frame. The company claims that AF speeds are 210% faster than on the contrast-detect-only GFX 50R, and our early experience suggests that autofocus is indeed vastly improved.

The last of the major features on the GFX 100 is its video capabilities. It can capture DCI and UHD 4K video at bit rates up to 400Mbps, with your choice of H.265 or H.264 codecs. It supports Fujifilm’s Eterna Film Simulation mode and can output 10-bit 4:2:2 F-Log video to an external recorder.

The GFX 100 will be available at the end of June for $ 9999.95.
