Canon now offers a service to de-click the Control Ring on its RF lenses

In addition to a larger diameter mount and additional contacts, one of new features of Canon’s RF lenses—and one of its EF to RF adapters—is the Control Ring, a physical dial around the perimeter of the lens that can be customized to control various camera functions including aperture, ISO and shutter speed.

By default, the Control Ring is adjusted in predetermined steps, which click into place while rotating the ring. While this is beneficial when you need a tactile indication of how many steps you’ve adjusted various settings, it does cause a bit of movement and noise, which isn’t helpful if you’re filming video.

Canon is addressing this problem by offering a de-clicking service for RF lenses. According to a pricing sheet, Canon will charge $ 79.99 to de-click any RF lens and $ 59.99 to de-click the Control Ring Mount Adapter EF-EOS R, not including the cost of taxes and shipping. Once de-clicked, the lens or adapter will be able to be switched between its default functionality and the de-clicked mode.

The service can be scheduled via Canon’s customer service phone number (1-800-652-2666) or its online support page.

Adobe Creative Cloud no longer offers most older Lightroom and Photoshop versions

Adobe Creative Cloud no longer offers customers access to most older versions of Lightroom and Photoshop. The company announced its decision to limit Creative Cloud download availability via its Adobe Blog this week, stating that subscribers can now only download the two most recent major versions of both Lightroom and Photoshop.

The direct download access is provided through the Adobe.com website and Creative Cloud desktop app. According to the company, the ‘vast majority’ of Adobe CC customers are already using the two most recent major release versions of both applications.

By forcing the remaining users to make this transition, Adobe says it can ‘ensure peak performance and benefits across Windows and Mac operating systems.’ This change means Adobe CC subscribers can only download Photoshop versions that start with ’19.x.x’ and ’20.x.x,’ and Lightroom versions that start with ‘7.x.x’ and ‘8.x.x.’

Nikon US’s ‘Capture the Savings’ event offers instant savings on cameras, kits and lenses

Nikon US has announced its seasonal ‘Capture the Savings’ sales event and with it comes a number of impressive instant savings across its mirrorless, DSLR and Coolpix cameras, as well as Nikkor lenses.

The event, which starts Sunday, April 28, is limited to products sold in the United States by Nikon Authorized Dealers, including but not limited to Adorama and B&H. If multiple products are required for the instant savings, Nikon notes that the items must be bought at the same time and appear on the same receipt for the savings to apply.

Ultra-compact Canon EOS Rebel SL3 offers eye-detect AF and cropped 4K capture

Canon has introduced the EOS Rebel SL3, its smallest and lightest DSLR ever. It uses the same 24MP APS-C CMOS sensor as its SL2 predecessor but adds a DIGIC 8 processor, eye-detection when using Dual Pixel AF, improved battery life and 4K video capture with a substantial crop.

The SL3 manages to shave a little of the SL2’s size and weight, making it a very trim 15.84oz / 450g. The camera’s most notable upgrade is its new DIGIC 8 processor, and it maintains the SL2’s fully articulated 3″ 1.04M-dot touchscreen, 5 fps burst shooting rate and Wi-Fi capability. The SL3 does boast significantly better battery life than its predecessor; a very healthy 1,070 shots per charge compared to the SL2’s 650-shot rating.

The SL3 seemingly improves on the SL2’s 1080p video spec with 4K/24p recording, but this is unfortunately accompanied by a heavy crop like the one we saw on its M50 mirrorless sibling. Dual Pixel autofocus is also unavailable when shooting 4K video.

The Canon EOS Rebel SL3 will be available at the end of this month in either black or white color options for $ 600 body-only or $ 750 with 18-55mm F4-5.6 IS STM lens included.

The Sony RX0 II offers internal 4K/30p recording, improved Eye AF and a flip-up LCD screen

Sony has announced the RXO II, an ultra-compact camera that packs a lot of tech and specs into tiny device that’s roughly the size of a GoPro camera.

At the heart of the second-generation device is a 1″-type Exmor RS CMOS sensor, powered by Sony’s BIONZ X image processing engine that features a sensitivity range of ISO 80-12800. The camera uses a 15.3-megapixel crop from a 20MP sensor.

In front of the sensor is a ZEISS Tessar T* 24mm-equivalent F4.0 fixed wide-angle lens that has a minimum focusing distance of 20cm. The device measures 59mm x 40.5mm x 35mm and weighs just 132g. Its ruggedized frame keeps the internals waterproof down to 10m (32.7ft), shockproof up to 2m (6.5ft), crushproof up to 200KG of force and rustproof.

One of the most interesting additions is an updated LCD screen that tilts upward 180-degrees, downward 90-degrees and even works underwater. This addition will be a welcomed addition for vloggers and the selfie-obsessed, but it should also prove useful when trying to get footage in hard-to-reach situations.

The RX0 II features internal 4K/30p internal recording with full pixel readout and no pixel binning. Sony says ‘by oversampling this data, the appearance of moiré and jaggies is reduced to deliver smooth, high-quality 4K footage with exceptional detail and depth.’ The camera also features high frame rate filming at up to 1,000 frames per second, uncompressed 4K HDMI output and simultaneous proxy movie recording. The RX0 II includes Picture Profile, S-Log2 and Time Code / User Bit functions for maximum post-production latitude.

On the photography front, the RX0 II includes an anti-distortion shutter up to 1/32,000th of a second and a maximum burst speed of 16 fps. Sony has improved the color reproduction from the original RX0 and included an optional Soft Skin Effect that can be used when taking portraits to help minimize blemishes.

Sony has also improved the Eye AF functionality of the RX0 II. Like the firmware version 5.0 update for the Sony a9, the RX0 II will now lock-on to the eye of a subject when the shutter is half-pressed.

Up to five RX0 II cameras can be synced together and controlled wirelessly using Sony’s Imaging Edge Mobile app. If five cameras isn’t enough an upcoming access point, due for a Summer 2019 release, will be able to control between five and fifty cameras at once. The RX0 II is also compatible with the Camera Control Box CCB-WD1, which is able to control up to 100 cameras.

The RX0 II will ship in April 2019 and be available at authorized Sony retailers for $ 700 / CAN$ 900.

Newly announced microSD Express format offers transfer speeds up to 950MBps

The SD Association has launched the microSD Express format, bringing extremely fast read speeds of up to 985 MBps to microSD cards — approximately 10 times faster than current high-end cards are capable of.

Like the SD Express format, microSD Express uses the NVMe 1.3 and PCIe 3.1 interfaces that are deployed in PC computers to power high-speed SSD drives. This technology is integrated into the second row of pins on the card. This means microSD Express cards will work at full speed on compatible devices but will also be backward compatible.

The new standard will not only provide much higher transfer speeds but also reduce power consumption compared to regular microSD cards, thanks to support for the low-power sub-states (L1.1 and L1.2) of PCIe v3.1.

High-speed and high-capacity microSD card could be very useful in all sorts of applications, from automotive to mobile, but in the imaging realm might provide most value to video shooters who need the capability to shoot 360-degree and/or Raw footage without being limited by storage.

That said, we are likely still some time away from manufacturers launching any microSD Express cards and compatible devices. In the meantime more information is available in the video above and the official press release on sdcard.org.

Fujifilm X-T30 offers most of the X-T3’s feature set for $900

Fujifilm has unveiled the X-T30, its latest APS-C mirrorless camera. The X-T30 provides many of the features found in the higher-end X-T3, including its 26.1MP X-Trans sensor and X-Processor 4 Quad Core-CPU, along with some autofocus improvements that will come to the X-T3 later via a firmware update.

The X-T30 offers a hybrid AF system with 425 points across the entire frame, and boasts faster face detection compared to its X-T20 predecessor. Eye detection AF can be used in AF-C mode, and phase detection AF is now usable in lower light conditions.

On the video front, the X-T30 offers a surprisingly robust feature set including 4K/30p and 10-bit 4:2:2 output via HDMI and 8-bit 4:2:0 internal recording. That’s one of a few key differences between the X-T30 and X-T3 – upgrading to the X-T3 gets you 10-bit 4:2:0 internal and 4K/60p.

The X-T30 is an altogether smaller and lighter camera than the X-T3 (383 g / 13.5 oz compared to 539 g / 19 oz) and offers a smaller, lower-resolution viewfinder – 0.62x and 2.36M-dot to the X-T3’s 0.75x and 3.69M-dot EVF. A 3″ 1.04M-dot touchscreen tilts on one axis, and a single card slot is offered.

A new, lower native ISO of 160 is offered, and burst shooting with continuous autofocus tops out at 20 fps (8 fps with mechanical shutter). Bluetooth connectivity has been added on top of the Wi-Fi offered by the X-T20, and battery life sees a slight improvement over its predecessor as well – 380 shots versus 350 shots per charge (CIPA).

The Fujifilm X-T30 will go on sale in March for $ 899 body-only, $ 999 with XC 15-45mm F3.5-5.6 OIS Power Zoom or $ 1299 with 18-55mm F2.8-4. At launch the X-T30 will be offered in black or silver, with a handsome charcoal silver option to follow in June.

Valhalla, New York, February 14, 2019 – FUJIFILM Corporation today unveiled several new announcements for the FUJIFILM X Series lineup, including the launch of the FUJIFILM X-T30 (X-T30), its new mirrorless digital camera that provides photographers of all levels with enhancements in image quality at greater speed and accuracy. Fujifilm also announced the FUJINON XF16mmF2.8 R WR wide angle lens with a compact, lightweight and weather-resistant design for its XF family of interchangeable lenses.

The new system features Fujifilm’s X-Trans CMOS 4 Sensor. This 4th generation, 26.1 megapixel imaging sensor, is one of the highest resolution sensors among APS-C sensor digital cameras. The small, lightweight camera also takes advantage of Fujifilm’s new X-Processor 4 Quad Core-CPU, which provides content creators of all levels with fast auto-focus (AF), accurate face detection and enough power to create beautiful, high-resolution stills. The sensitivity of ISO 160 — previously only available as extended ISO — is now available as a regular ISO option and will serve to facilitate capturing moments in bright daylight outdoors.

The X-T30 also includes advanced features such as the Focus Lever which enables users to quickly and easily shift to a focus point, an intuitive touch-screen panel, and an ergonomic body design to ensure hand-held stability in versatile shooting conditions. At a weight of just 13.51oz, the compact and lightweight body is comfortable to hold even when it is mounted with a large lens, such as a telephoto zoom.

Evolved for video-recording capability, the X-T30 offers the ability to record ultra high-definition (UHD) 4K or Full HD 1080p video and high quality audio – without additional equipment – to accommodate the needs of a wide range of content creators.

New Firmware Updates for FUJIFILM X-T3
New firmware version [FUJIFILM X-T3 Ver. 3.00] for the FUJIFILM X-T3 will be released in April 2019 to strengthen the accuracy of the X-T3’s face/eye detection feature, and to provide enhanced AF performance and speed, and operability of the X-T3 touch screen.

  • Enhanced Accuracy of Face/Eye Detection and AF Performance: The X-T3 firmware update provides improvements in the X-T3’s AF algorithm, with face detection of the X-T3 enhanced by approximately 30%. GoPro Plus now offers unlimited cloud storage and increased accessory discounts

GoPro has given a boost to its Plus subscription service. From now on the service offers unlimited cloud storage space for photos and videos to its subscribers. Previously users could upload unlimited photos but there was a 35-hour limit for video footage.

The service is specifically useful for users of WiFi-enabled GoPro cameras, such as the Hero5, Hero6 and Hero7 models, who can now automatically upload all captured footage to the cloud, without the need for any manual data transfer to a computer or other device first.

In addition to the lifted storage limit, the discount on GoPro accessories has also been increased for Plus subscribers. It is now 50% off most mounts and other accessories, compared to 20% previously. What hasn’t changed is the monthly subscription rate at $ 5 which makes the service a pretty enticing option for GoPro power users. There’s also a 30 day free trial period for the service if you’re interested in trying it out first.

We’ve seen Sony’s IMX586 1/2-inch 48MP sensor appear in several higher-end devices in recent months but the Redmi 7 is now the first budget device to offer the chip. The sensor isn’t really meant for outputting medium-format image resolution image files. Instead a quad-Bayer filter array allows for high-quality 12MP images with low noise levels and real-time HDR processing. The main chip is accompanied by a 5MP depth sensor for bokeh and similar effects.

Redmi, which used to be the budget line within the Xiaomi smartphone portfolio, has now been promoted to a proper sub-brand, similar to what Honor is to Xiaomi competitor Huawei. The 7 is the first device launched under this new sub-brand and does not only offer impressively looking main camera specs for the money.

You also get a 13 MP front camera, 6.3-inch Full-HD+ LCD display, Snapdragon 660 chipset a massive 4,000 mAh battery with quick charge support and a microSD slot.

In terms of RAM and storage you can choose between 3/32 GB, 4/64 GB, and 6/64 GB combinations. and there is a microSD slot as well.

The cheapest option will set you back $ 150 (CNY999) and even the largest memory version is only $ 210 (CNY1,399). Pre-orders have already started in China and shipments are scheduled for January 15. We’d expect the Redmi 7 to make the jump into the US and other regions in the nearer future. We’ll have to wait for the first samples but it looks like the Redmi 7 should be high up the list of those who want good smartphone image quality at budget pricing in 2019.
