North Carolina has designated October 2017 ‘Photography Month’

08 Sep

Roy Cooper, the governor of North Carolina, has declared that October 2017 will be Photography Month in an official decree that “commend[s] its observance to all citizens.” That’s right, if you live in North Carolina and you love taking pictures, you now have an official month to celebrate your wallet-crushing hobby.

The Photography Month designation was issued for multiple reasons, not the least of which is that October is when North Carolina hosts a number of photography-related festivals and fairs. But it goes beyond this.

In addition to its large number of photography events, the proclamation points out that photography “enriches the lives of those who practice and appreciate the art form,” that the state’s photographers, “take great pride in sharing their accomplishments in the areas of photographic art,” and that the state, “recognizes those photographers who capture our diverse communities and landscapes.”

Check out a full copy of the proclamation below:

Fujifilm says photographic paper prices will increase starting in October

25 Aug

Fujifilm has announced an upcoming price increase that will be applied to photographic papers starting this October. The company says it expects the price increase will be โ€˜of at least [a] double digital percent,โ€™ though a specific percentage has not been provided at this time. The price change will be implemented across the globe.

The company cites a decrease in demand for photographic papers as the cause, saying that while it has made changes to its production to deal with a ‘rising expense ratio,’ it expects that demand will continue to decrease in the future, necessitating a price increase.

A look back at the week: October 25, 2014

25 Oct

It’s been a busy week here in the office as we’re working hard on some post-Photokina reviews and preparing for PPE next week. We also got a serious dose of Pacific Northwest fall weather, and the rainy afternoons and evenings left us plenty of time to go poking around the corners of the internet for important (read: probably not really important) things that happened in the world of photography. Read more

17, October, 2014 – I Wish I Knew How To Paint

Sometimes it is good to slow it down and reflect on our photography.  In his last article Frank Sauer showed us how much we could find to photograph in our own backyard.  Today we share Frank Sauer’s newest essay I Wish I Knew How To Paint.  I hope you enjoy this essay and take some time this weekend to explore the world around you and try some photography like Frank describes.

20 October, 2014 – About Photographic Competitions

25 Oct

Every now and then Alain Briot contributes an article that starts good discussions in the forum.  Today’s article About Print Competitions will be just that kind of article.  In his last article Alain did a very good essay about Critiquing Photographs.  Now he takes us into the area of judging prints entered into competitions.  Alain covers just about all aspects one could think of when it comes to judging prints in competitions.  For many photographers this is a part of learning as well as recognition.  You decide after reading the article. In my own experience over many years I have found it interesting to see how images are judged.  I also wonder many times how judges would react to some of the classics of photography. In many ways that images are judged, they would never had received an honorable mention in todays competitions.  This is a very enlightening essay and thank you Alain for this.

Our good friend Thomas Knoll the inventor of Photoshop recently shared his images as a slide show at The Adobe Max 2014 program.  Thomas is a very fine photographer and we thought you might want to see his excellent photography. Enjoy his 9 minute slide show HERE
