World’s Most Powerful Man-Made Tornado in a Museum

World's Strongest Man Made Tornado 1

Experience the awe-inspiring power of a tornado, up-close and personal, without putting yourself in serious danger chasing a real one. The Mercedes-Benz museum in Stuttgart hosts the strongest artificially generated tornado in the world, with 144 jets spewing 28 tons of smoke in a 112-foot-high column. Why intentionally produce a tornado in a showroom full of over 150 luxury vehicles? The answer may surprise you.

World's Strongest Man-Made Tornado 5

World's Strongest Man-Made Tornado 2

The facility, designed by Dutch architecture firm UNStudio, is one of the most cutting-edge of its kind. Reminiscent of the Guggenheim, the Mercedes-Benz Museum is a steel structure based on a double-helix, featuring a massive central atrium viewable from the floors that spiral around it. All rooms are open, all walls are curved and each of the 1800 triangular window panes on the exterior walls is unique.

The 1500 exhibition areas contained within the space are connected without any fire zones – making them a bit of a hazard if a fire were ever to really break out. The solution? An artificial tornado created by injecting air into the interior courtyard of the museum from those 144 jets. The smoke is collected by the air currents and whisked outside.

Though it’s actually a safety measure, the tornado effect is so spectacular that it has become a bit of a tourist attraction, bringing even more people to check out the museum. See it in action above.

A+ Architecture: The World’s Most Dazzling Designs

21 Mar

[ By Steph in Architecture & Public & Institutional. ]

Architizer Architecture Awards 1

Can modern architecture be accessible – and even alluring – to everyone in the world? Architizer believes that it already is, and the 87 winners of its first annual A+ Awards prove that assertion with a dazzling array of designs ranging from dramatic mountain overlooks to bright, graphic pop-up stores. Chosen by a jury and 150,000 public voters, the A+ Award winners accomplish the blog’s goal of “breaking architecture out of the echo chamber.”

Architizer Architecture Awards 2

The point of the contest is not only to honor the world’s most incredible modern structures, but destroy the idea that architecture is only for a small group of elites. “The mission of the Architizer A+ Awards is to remind everyone in the world that they are fans of architecture, even if they don’t realize it,” says Architizer CEO Marc Kushner. “This year’s winners make our job easy. They are projects where noble ambitions match their formal sophistication – they represent the best architecture from across the globe – and more than one project I had never seen before!”

Architizer Architecture Awards 3

Winners include the Isbjerget apartment complex by JDS Architects, a tapered set of white buildings designed to resemble icebergs in the harbor of Denmark, and the National Tourist Route Trollstigen by Reiulf Ramstad Architects, a plateau between deep fjords in Norway that holds the title of most awards won by a single project.

Architizer Architecture Awards 4

Architizer Architecture Awards 5

Architizer Architecture Awards 6

Among other notable winners are Yayoi Kusama’s pop up store for Louis Vuitton, Dolomitenblick by Plasma Studio, and the Wuxi Grand Theatre by PES-Architects. See them all at Architizer.

Gregory Heisler Will Now BTS For You My Most Favorite Photo He Has Ever Shot

13 Jan

To understand the impact this photo had on me when it first came out, you kinda have to get into the head of a Baltimore Sun photographer during the run-up to the 2004 Summer Olympics.

For one thing, this is the only photo which has ever made me shout the F-word in a supermarket checkout line. So yeah, I have been waiting a long time for this BTS.

Oh, and if that weren't enough, there are two more Gregory Heisler vids inside, too… Read more »

Filmed on saturday the 9th of October at the Brisbane Powerhouse. The security guards were onto it with not allowing photography (bless them), so hopefully ‘videography’ is allowed……and i had to just hit record when i had the all clear and whatever song Gotye had next on the setlist was what would be filmed. Lo and behold it was the one everyone’s mad for….. Big thanks to Alex for being my security guard keen eye eagle and watching my flanks for security guards allowing me to concentrate on my filming. Other Brands

Normally we don’t see a lot of lenses from other brands purchased but in the last 4 months we’ve noticed a spike in sales of lenses from Signma, Tamron and Tokina who each make quality lenses for DSLRS of different brands – many times at more affordable prices than the equivalent lenses from the main brands. Here’s the ones that we saw decent sales of:

1. Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras (also available for Nikon, Samsung and Sigma DSLRS)
