Note that this tip provides general suggestions that may or may not work based on your laptop configuration. Some with the exact same laptop configuration as the author may find that this tip exactly points to where to adjust the brightness; others may need to look around their system settings some….

Fujifilm: more X-mount cameras and X10 firmware on their way

13 Jan

Fujifstory.jpg

CES 2012: Fujifilm has confirmed in a discussion with dpreview, more details about its plans for the X-system. It also said a firmware update for the X10 aimed at reducing the ‘white-orb’ problem is due in early February, if not before. The firmware update, that addresses the hard-edged white discs or orbs generated when highlight regions clip, will reduce but not completely remove the effect. Meanwhile, the company hinted the X-Pro1 will be accompanied by at least one less expensive model.

DVD Contest Winner + Vote for 1 More!!!

13 Dec

The Winner!!

Nicola Taylor
http://www.nicolataylorphotographer.com/

Wow! I have to say, there were some really outstanding submissions for the Fashion Photography Exposed DVD contest tweeted to me this past week. So, first off, a BIG thanks to everybody who participated in the contest and especially to those who even joined twitter for the first time just to submit your photograph. It was amazing to see everyone jump on this contest and tweet their work to me!

I have spent the last day trying to narrow down the list of great photos to just one single shot and I’m having the toughest time. But I keep reminding myself that there can only be ONE winner. And the winner’s name is Nicola Taylor from the UK. I love the ethereal, surreal feeling with Nicola’s shot and it depicts the element of “Air” very well. It has a very occult feel in my opinion and I love Occult-Lore. It reminded me of a Gothic story, very dreamy and sensual with a “Neverland” feel. Great job, Nicola! You had some tough competition but your shot really stood out for me.

BUT! Wait, I’m not done yet!

Because I had such a tough time choosing a winner I wanted to give the runners-up 1 more chance to score a copy of the FP Exposed DVD. So I have rounded up my top 8 selections and we’re going to let you, the readers here at the FP Blog, decide on the second winner! Same idea except obviously the second DVD is the second one off the press, not the first. But I will sign it and ship it off to you, no matter where you live.

How to Vote:

Choose your favorite photo below and click on the “TWEET” BUTTON TO VOTE!

Alternatively, you can tweet the # of the photo you would like to vote for example “#3″ and the hashtag text “#FPDVDContest @FPblog” via your twitter page. So your final tweet would look something like “I Vote for #1 Fabio Gloor in the #FPDVDContest @FPblog”

Rules:

  • Please only 1 Vote Per Twitter Account! So only tweet us 1 time!!!
  • Re-tweets from friends DO COUNT AS VOTES!!!
  • The photo with the most votes, WINS!!

VOTING ENDS IN 48 HOURS ON FRIDAY DECEMBER 9TH @ MIDNIGHT EST!!
WE WILL ANNOUNCE THE WINNER THE FOLLOWING DAY ON SATURDAY DECEMBER 10TH

So here are our 8 runner ups:

#1 – Fabio Gloor – Tweet

#2 – Katie Eleanor – Tweet

#3 – Yohanes Mangitung – Tweet

#4 – Nicole Kotrbova – Tweet

One More Thing… Thank You & RIP Steve Jobs

07 Oct

Back in 1983/4 my friend showed me his Apple IIe and I was blown away. In 1986 I was super stoked to get a Macintosh Plus. No more hand written reports or worse using a type writer and relying on Wite-out to correct my bad typing. The world thanks to Steve Jobs and Apple is very different now.

I have been an Apple fan as long as I’ve used computers and I’m unashamed to admit I’ve purchased a vast majority of their computers and mobile devices. When the Macintosh II came out, Apple’s first color computer, I knew the world of digital imaging would be in my future. I didn’t now how exactly, but I knew it would happen. Photoshop did not exist in September 1988 when I paid over $ 5000 for the Mac II, but as I saw software develop in the months and years after that enabled the editing of photos I was enthralled. Sadly scanners were equally expensive back then, but I relied on scanning my photos using an HP scanner in my college computer lab. It took ~15 minutes to scan a 4×6 print at a resolution of 1600×1200 (a giant file at the time) and to share it I had to use dial up at home or bike to campus to use the earliest form of the Internet. It was a super exciting time. It was so obvious things were changing in radical ways. I had no idea how it would turn out exactly, but Steve seemed to have a master vision that kept Apple users on their toes waiting for the next development.

Since that time so much has changed. Steve Jobs without any doubt has influenced my life laying the groundwork for my interests and career aspirations. Would I have been able to do the things I’ve done to date with out Apple or Steve Jobs… likely, but not with as much passion. Steve Jobs kept me on my toes always thinking about the next big evolution in computing, content creation and publishing channels.

A Crowd Photographs the First Apple iPhone – MacWorld Expo 2007

I never met Steve Jobs, but I came close while at the 2008 MacWorld Expo. It was the year following the release of the iPhone and he was on the convention floor at the Apple booth. He was busy catching up on email on his iPhone. I never had any interest in interrupting him, but I did want to get a “I saw Steve Jobs! photo”. I had my dSLR with me which stuck out like a sore thumb and every time I raised it to take his photo one of his handlers would casually move between us blocking my view. I had to eventually shoot from my hip as I walked by to get his photo. I suppose it added to the adventure of it all.

I will certainly miss Steve Jobs not because I ever knew him, but because of how he made me think about the next big thing with each big announcement. The computers and gadgets were a means to an end… self publishing, photo editing, podcasting, webcasting/video conferencing, app development and so on. I will also miss hearing his catch phrase delivered only as he could say it:

One More Thing…

One final note, if you have yet to see this then I highly recommend setting some time aside to watch Steve’s Stanford commencement speech from 2005

Rest in peace Steve and thank you.

Microsoft Publisher 2010 – Save AutoRecover Information More or Less Often

28 Sep

If you’re worried about program crashes and power outages, you may want Publisher 2010 to save AutoRecover information more often to reduce the chances of losing work.

By default, Microsoft Publisher 2010 saves AutoRecover information for open publications every 10 minutes. So, if a program / operating system crash or power failure shuts down Publisher before you forget to save your open files, upon restart of the software you may be able to recover some of your editing.

10 minutes may be too long an interval; a theoretical crash 9 minutes and 59 seconds after the latest save or AutoRecover save can cause you to lose a great deal of work. Reducing this interval may cause less work to be lost due to catastrophic failure. On the other hand, you might find it quite annoying that Publisher pauses so often to save the information and decide to increase this interval….

Miscellaneous Software – Get Rid of Temp Files, Junk, Web Browsing Cache, Search History, More

12 Sep

Wise Disk Cleaner Free can remove usage histories, temp files, and other junk from your Windows hard drive and registry.

The longer you run Windows, the more junk accumulates on your hard drive and in the Windows Registry. This includes stuff like temporary files created by installation programs that never get properly removed, search histories, web browser cache and cookies, and most recently used file lists.

Besides clogging up your hard drive and filling up the Registry, junk can actually slow down your machine due to increased file and registry key seek times. One option for removing such files is the “Wise Disk Cleaner Free” application. This program through a tabbed interface can perform basic scans to clean junk from your system. Advanced scans allow you to select files by type. A “Slimming System” scan removes files you may not need including sample pictures, help files, and IMEs that allow for the inputting of various languages into applications….
