Bing Search Engine – Return More Desirable Search Results by Adding Ignore Words

02 Sep

Tired of web pages containing particular words or phrases appearing in a Bing search? Create search queries that ignore them.

When performing searches with Bing involving words or phrases that have multiple meanings, you might wish to prevent the results from including certain types of pages. Perhaps a word or phrase has a popular meaning but you want pages related to the alternate one.

Another example is searching for a word or phrase that matches the name of a TV show, sports team, movie, etc. These popular culture references may result in pages in which you have no interest. For example, searching for “bones” may show results relating to the TV show, restaurants, a movie, or other non-anatomical subjects….

Mozilla Firefox – Misc – View More Details on Downloaded Files

20 May

FirefoxDownloadsView shows additional details about the most recent files downloaded from the Firefox web browser.

FirefoxDownloadsView is a Windows utility from NirSoft that displays additional information about the latest files downloaded via Mozilla Firefox. Details include (when available) each filename, original file and referrer URLs, full path to the download, MIME type, downloaded and total bytes, start / end / duration times, and an estimate of the average download speed (note that the latter may be influenced by hard drive speed, compression, and by your antivirus software scanning downloads).

As with other NirSoft tools, details can be saved to text, CSV, XML, or HTML files, or HTML reports may be generated from the results. Other features include right-click shortcuts to open the selected URL or filename and a “Find” feature in case you are wading through hundreds or more downloads. The software can be run via a batch file, for example to generate automated HTML reports….

Microsoft Publisher 2010 – Hide Recent Publications List or Show More

02 May

For privacy, configure Publisher 2010 not to show the list of your recent publications. Or, show more of them.

By default, Microsoft Publisher 2010 displays a list of your recent publications when selecting “Recent” from the Backstage View. This lets you quickly access publications that you have previously edited, especially useful if you save documents on a wide array of folders and/or network locations.

If you find this feature useful and work on a large number of publications, you may wish Publisher 2010 to show more recent documents. On the other hand, if you are concerned about privacy you may wish Publisher 2010 to not show this information. To make either configuration change:…

Microsoft Excel 2010 – Hide Recent Documents or Show More

08 Feb

Configure Excel 2010 to hide the list of recent documents for privacy, or show more of them.

As with other Office 2010 applications, Microsoft Excel 2010 keeps a list of recent workbooks, allowing you to directly access frequently-edited documents without having to navigate your computer or network drives. If you have workbooks located in a variety of locations, this Recent list may prove very useful.

While Excel 2010 by default displays the last 25 documents, if you work on many workbooks you may want to increase this number up to 50. On the other hand, if you are worried about privacy you may wish to disable this list altogether….

Track Santa Claus using sophisticated equipment from NORAD.

Merry Christmas! A fun site for the young and young at heart, NORAD (the North American Aerospace Defense Command) has set up a worldwide Santa Claus tracker website. Powered by Google, you can view Santa’s location as he zips across the world in his reindeer sleigh delivering toys. Santa Cams are set up to record the visit, “ultra-cool, high-tech, high-speed digital cameras pre-positioned at many locations around the world only on December 24th”. You’ll also be able to see how many cookies Santa munches on.

As Santa has gone high-tech, you can also track him via the Google Earth application, allowing the young and old to do some learning as they follow his flight. Microsoft Outlook 2010 – Show More Calendar Months in the Right Pane

30 Oct

Configure Outlook 2010 to show more calendar months in the To-Do Bar on the right side of the application window.

On the right side of the Microsoft Outlook 2010 window is the “To-Do Bar”. By default, this shows the current calendar month, upcoming appointments, and a list of Tasks.

If you would like to, at a glance, see the next calendar month as well in the To-Do Bar, perform the following tweak. You can add even more months, though this will require a higher resolution / window size to view them all. Also, simultaneously viewing more months may push the appointment and Task displays off the screen….

Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 – Backtrack Your Mistakes by Allowing More Undos

30 Oct

If PowerPoint 2010’s Undo feature doesn’t remember enough edits, force it to remember up to 150.

While frantically putting together a presentation in Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 at the last minute, you’re bound to make some mistakes. Don’t worry – you can easily undo edits by pressing Ctrl + Z. In fact, PowerPoint by default remembers up to your last 20 edits, so if you make a mess of things you should be able to recover. (Of course, you should still save your work often, and perhaps create backup copies at different stages of your presentation editing.)

For many people 20 edits is enough. However, if you need PowerPoint to remember even more edits (up to 150), the following tweak should help:…

13 September, 2010 – Sony A55 Further Evaluation & MORE

14 Sep

The Sony A55 promises to be one of the hottest new cameras of the season. Following my earlier first review I’ve had an opportunity to work with one for another couple of weeks on my home turf. Today sees my latest article, Sony A55 – A Further Evaluation.

If you just logged onto the site for the first time in a while you may have noticed a slight change in the cosmetics, and also a new box in the upper right corner for "Contributor Log-In".

While the appearance change is small, underneath the skin there have been massive changes which have been in development for the past 12 months.

In the days ahead we will be rolling out a number of new services to readers, so stay tuned.

PS: Try the new site search box on the left panel or here. I think you’ll find it helpful in finding content among the 4,000+ pages on the site.

Michael Reichmann will be interviewed live online on Smibs TV this coming Wednesday, September 15th at 1:30pm Pacific, 4:30pm Eastern. That’s 20:30 GMT. I hope that you can watch.

"Awesome video presentation.

I have learnt so much more after looking through this on the weekend.  The tip about pushing blacks and fill light in the Basic Module was worth the price alone.  My images of a recent trip to the Australian Outback are popping and punching with delight!

Thanks Michael and Jeff – I really appreciate you taking the considerable time to share your in-depth knowledge and insights."
