Modern Motorcycles: 15 Super-Sleek Custom Rides

23 Jun

[ By Steph in Technology & Vehicles & Mods. ]

modern motorcycles eve2

With their streamlined silhouettes, exposed mechanical parts, high-end detailing and powerful motors, these 15 modern motorcycle designs represent a new era of aesthetics in the industry, even when they’re customs built on the bases of classic bikes.

Akrapovic Full Moon

modern motorcycles akra

modern motorcycles acra 2

Looking unlike any motorcycle we’ve ever seen on the streets, the Akrapovic Full Moon motorcycle concept features a massive 30-inch aluminum and carbon front wheel and a sculpted, aerodynamic metal sheet frame that envelops the rear wheel. Hydraulic suspension keeps the bike upright when it’s parked, and automated steering keeps the handlebars looking sleek.

BMW Apollo Streamliner

A combination of traditional styling and futuristic looks keeps this concept by industrial designer Mehmet Doruk Erdem firmly rooted within the BMW brand, while bringing it into this century and beyond. Designed for speed rather than everyday use, the Apollo Streamliner features a pointed front end to reduce wind drag on the rider.

Rectilinear T005 Cross

In contrast to the sleeker curvilinear designs, the Thrive Motorcycle T005 Cross goes for a chunky rectilinear look. The whole thing is actually a modified 1984 Yamaha – the designers stripped it down, fitted it with off-road tires and added a custom body made of sheet aluminum, updated for the modern era with a smartphone slot.

Bandit9 Bishop

Another custom modification takes a Honda Supersport and transforms it into a minimalist design enthusiast’s dream, with wood burl side panels contrasting with the steel unibody. Bandit9 released only nine models of this bike, with a 90cc or 125cc engine.

Bandit9 Eve

Bandit9 also used a 1967 Honda SS bike as the basis of a custom design, pairing it with fashions from Konstantin Kofta in this editorial for a futuristic effect. The bullet-like chrome-finished unibody puts the focus on the exposed mechanical parts.

A Step Above The Rest: 15 Spectacular Modern Staircases

16 Jun

[ By Steph in Design & Fixtures & Interiors. ]

modern stairs pool bridge

Going far beyond their practical function of connecting one level of an interior to the next, these modern staircase designs make a striking statement, often doubling as a sculptural element or offering some other additional purpose. Some act as amphitheater seats, some have built-in gardens and some simply steal the spotlight no matter what else is in the room.

Amphi-Staircase

Inspired by the ‘circles and ovals’ that make up Disney characters like Mickey Mouse, this amphitheater-style staircase stands as the heat of an adult learning center in Denmark by architecture studio CEBRA. The lines of the multi-functional staircase echo those of the curving white balconies that jut out into the atrium at every level.

Glossy Spiral Stairs in a Modular Library

Soaring 115 feet toward the elevated ceiling, this glossy white building-within-a-building adds a library to a modern medical research center at a Rotterdam hospital. It basically functions like one very big bookcase within the large open space, featuring spiraling staircases on either end.

4-Story Living Staircase

modern stairs planted circle

A garden, tea bar and library can be found within a stunning four-story spiraling staircase by designer Paul Cocksedge at the Ampersand office building for creative technology businesses in London. Designed to encourage interaction between workers, it features a different function at every level, including a small curated selection of books on the first floor. Pick your own mint from the garden boxes along the railing to make tea at a hot water machine once you’ve reached the top.

Floating Staircase in an All-Black Room

modern stairs floating

The warm wood lining the interior of this floating staircase by Hidden Fortress makes it glow against the black surfaces of a Berlin concept store, giving it the feel of an optical illusion. The maritime pine used throughout the store is left in its natural state upstairs, so the staircase serves as a visual connection to the next level as well as a literal one.

Partially Suspended Staircase

modern stairs partially suspended

modern stairs partially suspended 2

Italian architecture firm Francesco Librizzi Studio suspends most of a white-framed staircase from the stairwell, making it seem as if it’s supported by nothing but the walls. A separate section stands on its own at ground level. The designers were trying to use the stairs as a narrative scheme, asking questions like “Can a staircase tell us that time passes and children grow up?”

High Art Hits Streets: Classical Paintings in Modern Settings

08 Jun

[ By WebUrbanist in Art & Drawing & Digital. ]

art street train car

If context is critical to understanding art, then what happens to a work when you push a famous piece through time and space to a highly familiar and everyday place? Where fine artwork meets street scenes, strange and beautiful things begin to happen.

street art sidewalk scene

art coffee shop remix

In a series called Art History in Contemporary Life, Ukrainian artist Alexey Kondakov elaborately relocates key figures from their historical canvasses into jarringly mundane settings, putting classical art in modern contexts. The results are seamless and convincing – one could almost imagine rehanging the hybrid works back up in museums.

art classic harp player

art dive bar scene

art kissing train cars

Madonna, child and a chorus of angels are suddenly found sitting in a dirty subway car, cherubs flutter below a shanty overhang and a half-naked hand harp player spins tunes for pennies for commuting pedestrians. Famous figures share drinks at a modern dive while lovers kiss on a darkened subway car.

Mobile, Modern & Modular: 15 Capsules for Off-Grid Living

04 Jun

[ By Steph in Architecture & Houses & Residential. ]

off grid open roof 5

Why stay tethered to the grid in a fixed location when you could live in a compact mobile pod that can be transported to the location of your choice? These modern capsules are what 21st-century off-grid dreams are made of, ranging from spacious self-sustaining retreats to accordion-like expanding shelters that are lightweight enough to tow behind a bicycle.

Tricycle House

Made mostly out of folded polypropylene, ‘Tricycle House’ by People’s Industrial Design Office is lightweight enough to be towed around like a bike trailer. The house can be expanded like an accordion to increase the space inside or make it more compact for travel. Translucent walls let in daylight and all amenities within – including a sink, stove, bath tub, water tank and transforming furniture – is manually powered. The firm also makes ‘tricycle gardens’ to tow alongside the house.

Egg-Like Ecocapsule

Shaped like a massive egg, the Ecocapsule by Nice Architects is a tiny off-grid living pod that’s equipped with all the comforts of home, including a bed, hot showers, flushing toilets and the capability to cook. Powered by solar panels and a built-in turbine, with a back-up battery for cloudy and still days, it can be shipped, air-lifted or towed and fits into a standard shipping container.

Diogene Hut by Renzo Piano

Designed by architect Renzo Piano for the Vitra campus in Weil-am-Rhein, Germany, the Diogene cabin offers 80 square feet for an individual occupant as a “voluntary place of retreat.” Photovoltaic panels and a rainwater retention tank make it self-sufficient, and it’s highly portable. There’s just enough room inside for a bed, table and chair.

Portable Retreat with a Roof Hatch

Three hinged panels open this two-level off-grid retreat to the sky on both the top and bottom floors, enhancing the occupant’s connection to whatever environment they’ve chosen. This mobile wooden shelter by Allergutendinge features a bunch of fold-down elements, hidden storage and a bed that doubles as a staircase to the loft.

Camouflage Stacked Wood Cabin

This ‘invisible hut’ looks like no more than a stack of logs when it’s all closed up, but a hatch on one side drops down to become the terrace for a rustic cabin. The Yeta Log Cabin by Lab Zero can be set up virtually anywhere, and as small and minimal as it is, it comes complete with a kitchen, shower, toilet and solar panels.

Opinion: Is the M Monochrom Typ 246 an anachronism or a modern marvel?

03 Jun

Before the popularization of color film, most cameras shot exclusively in black and white. Leica’s M Monochrom (Typ 246) and its predecessor, the M Monochrom, are remarkable not only because they shoot in black and white, but because they offer no option for recording in color. Is the black-and-white-only digital camera a radical concept, or a costly novelty? We ponder its existence. Read more

A lot of stuff made for cyclists, from rain gear to storage solutions at home, is just plain ugly. If you’re a discerning bike commuter with an eye for good design, you’ll appreciate these 17 stylish accessories that don’t sacrifice form for function, adding to a bike’s practicality in an aesthetically pleasing way.

Vadolibero Bike Butler + Shelf

Store your bike in style with Vadolibero’s two multifunctional stands. The Bike Butler is billed as “an urban-chic version of the most efficient biker wall-pocket,” with slide-out trays, drawers, a space for keys and sunglasses and a couple hooks. Keep it in the hallway as a means of organizing the small items you normally throw on a table, and corral your bike at the same time. The Bike Shelf is essentially a stage for your bike, putting it on display with lights and everything, but it’s also a functional wardrobe packed with storage space.

Students at Swiss art and design school ECAL came up with a line of clever biking accessories called ‘Savoir-Faire’ for Milan Design Week 2013. These detachable accessories and modifications either combine several functions in a single object, like the brake/horn on the handlebar, or add extra functions to make a bike more adaptable for everyday use, like snow chains and bottle carriers.

Sleek & Simple Cup Holder

This minimalist cup holder will help you tote your coffee across town, and consists of no more than two rings and a steel spring, requiring no screws or glue to hold it together. Flip the cup holder over to hold drinks of varying sizes.

Coolest Pools: 15 Enviable Modern Swimming Spots

25 May

[ By Steph in Architecture & Houses & Residential. ]

modern pool jellyfish 1

Daydream about escaping into an aquatic paradise of your very own in the form of a modern swimming pool that puts swimmers on display with a glass floor, appears in your ballroom at the push of a button or seems to blend right into a tropical sea on the horizon. These drool-worthy swim spots include a private living room pool in a five-story New York City townhouse, an interior courtyard pool accessible by a glass hatch in the floor, and a shady oasis in a Grecian cave.

Cantilevered Rooftop Pool with a Glass Floor

Not only does this swimming pool cantilever off the roof of a modern concrete home in coastal Spain “so the beach and sea can always be seen while sunbathing or swimming,” it’s got a glass floor so swimmers can be seen from the terrace below. Jellyfish House by Wiel Arets Architects features a staircase that goes straight from the yard to the rooftop for a beach-to-pool experience, and the pool can be seen from nearly all areas of the house.

Secret Under-Floor Pools
modern pool hidden floor 2

Even the ultra-rich have space concerns sometimes, or maybe they just really like cool things that appear and disappear at the touch of a button, like the rest of us. Either way, ‘Hydro Floors’ enable them to basically conjure a swimming pool out of nowhere on command with mobile flooring that can be stopped at various intervals to create pools of different depths. Push the button again to watch the water seep out of the way so the floor space can be used for dining, dancing or whatever else it is that people with too much money do with that kind of space.

Glass-Walled Above-Ground Modern Pool

The lush lawn of this house by Andres Remy Architects in Devoto, Argentina gently rises to meet the edge of a wooden deck surrounding an unusual above-ground pool. The pool features one glass side for a fishbowl-like view from the outside and an infinity effect from the swimmer’s perspective.

Slice House by Procter-Rihl

The Slice House in Porto-Alegre, Brazil by Procter-Rihl Architects features a complex prismatic geometric layout that generates “a series of spatial illusions in the interior spaces,” including a view right into the rooftop swimming pool from the dining room.

Indoor/Outdoor Living Room Pool

A glass hatch in the concrete floor of an urban townhouse can simply be lifted out of the way to provide access to a swimming pool, right under a retractible glass roof, creating a private and protected indoor/outdoor space on demand.

For the Record: 13 Modern & Conceptual Turntable Designs

31 Mar

[ By Steph in Technology & Vintage & Retro. ]

turntable flynote 2

As record players enjoy a resurgence in popularity, their designs get sleeker and more modern, incorporating 3D printing, lasers, magnets that levitate the disc so it plays while in mid-air and other high-tech features.

Star Trek Enterprise Record Player

turntables star trek 2

turntables star trek 1

It’s truly a shame that this Star Trek Enterprise-shaped record player is just a model and doesn’t actually work, but the level lot detail is impressive and it would be cool to see someone take the idea further.

DaVinci Audio Labs Luxury Turntable

turtnable davinci 1
da vinci audio labs gmbh swiss

A luxury turntable for people who can afford to drop a ton of money on the highest end of the spectrum, the AAS Gabriel by DaVinci Audio Labs is designed with thick bases based on the same process that’s used to cut grooves into masters, eliminating noise and vibration.

Void Record Player

turntable void 2

turntable void 1

‘Void’ by designer Rhea Jeong literally levitates a record in the air using a magnetic control system. A free-spinning red sphere contains the needle, amplifier and speaker. When you turn the record player on, you can control the levitation using touch sensors on the front of the base.

3D Printed Hand-Crank Record Player

turntable 3D printed 1

Another design bringing together technologies from very different eras is this 3D-printed creation by Oana Croitoru. Made on a MakerBot Replicator 2 for the Ghostly Vinyl Design Challenge, the design is operated via hand-crank.

Flynote

turntable flynote 2

turntable flynote 1

The Flynote also uses an electromagnetic field to suspend the disc above the base of the player. Say the designers, “The levitation technology uses repelling magnets combined with sophisticated electrons to keep floating objects in position. The plastic skin with the electromagnetic motor are provided with an LED crown to light the turntable and the disc while the product is on. Furthermore, those LED have a switch and an independent electric connection to switch them on at any tie and without interfering with the electromagnetic motor.”

Cantilevered Conversion: Sleek Modern Cargo Container Office

16 Mar

[ By WebUrbanist in Architecture & Offices & Commercial. ]

cargo container office design

While many intermodal freight crate transformations turn steel boxes into comfortable spaces, this project goes a step further both by taking maximum advantage of its material origins while still making the aesthetic result more than the sum of its parts.

cantilevered office design conversion

Repurposed as an office by and for architect Patrick Bradley, this 45-foot cargo container (re)creation makes use of existing openings on either end and requires as few cuts in the surface of the sides as possible (an energy- and cost-efficient approach). Each of these openings is in turn taken advantage of, in one case to create an entry sequence and, at the other end, to facilitate a lovely little balcony extension.

cantilevered shipping container office

Further, the design leverages the strength of the container to cantilever it out over a steep-sloping cliff already on the site, saving money, time and energy landscaping the lot. Simple modular cladding manages to transform the exterior appearance with ease as well.

cargo container office design

In the end, there is little about the project that screams ‘shipping container’ at first glance, yet the overall shape and structural advantages of that core element are maintained and utilized throughout – a brilliant blend of old and new.
