Intelligent Design? 14 Strikingly Modern Places of Worship

Dramatic and sculptural, monolithic as a stone monument or light as a bridal veil, these churches, chapels and meditation rooms eschew conventional architectural typologies for places of worship, prioritizing the way the structures make visitors feel while they’re inside. Some emphasize a connection to nature, while others encourage internal reflection or symbolize the act of marriage with unexpected visual metaphors.

Reinterpreting the stark, minimalist works of sculptor Richard Serra in architectural form, this blade-like chapel rises from the flat grasslands of Serbia, offering a space for meditation. Stockholm-based architect Predrag Vujanovic creates a strong perpendicular line contrasting the landscape with just two main elements: the folded steel of the roof, and the cortex steel sheets making up the ramp.

Japan’s most striking wedding chapel consists of two separate stairways that spiral up to the sky, joining into an observation platform looking out onto the sea at the pinnacle. The space beneath is glassed in to create an airy interior fitting up to 80 guests. From the center of the nave, one can look straight up into the oculus skylight framed by the spiral of the ramp.

Solid wood and windowless, this egg-shaped chapel on the southern side of busy Narinkka Square in Helsinki, Finland offers a quiet place of refuge. CNC-cut, glue-laminated sections of timber create the curving walls of the striking space, leading the eye upward to the void between the perimeter and the roof, where sunlight streams in.

St. Voile Chapel

A series of white pipes climb the walls of the St. Voile Chapel by Kasahara Design Work, interweaving in flowing organic patterns as a visual metaphor for marriage. Located on the banks of Niigata’s Shinano River, the chapel is largely defined by the play of daylight on these interior lines, which streams in through a pair of skylights at the pinnacle of the steep and narrow roof.

Gratitude Open Chapel

Set against the landscape of Lagunillas, Mexico like a series of four monumental stones, the simple white elements making up ‘Gratitude Open Chapel’ by Tatiana Bilbao + Dellekamp Arquitectos don’t actually form an interior space at all, but rather an outdoor gathering place for pilgrims making the holy ‘Ruta del Peregrino’ route.

Modern Masters: 10 Installations by Artist & Activist Ai Weiwei

China has incarcerated him, put him on house arrest and made every attempt to shut artist and activist Ai Weiwei up, but they haven’t stopped him from expressing his scathing criticism of the country’s rapid industrialization and cultural oppression at every turn. Known for investigating government corruption and cover-ups, Weiwei was arrested on highly questionable tax evasion charges and held in a tiny, constantly-lit room overseen by two guards around the clock, and wasn’t allowed to leave the country for a year after his release. He remains under heavy surveillance, and his moments are restricted, but through his art installations around the world, he’s still able to express the views Chinese officials find so threatening. Here are 10 of Weiwei’s most striking projects addressing everything from the current refugee crisis to the ‘Made in China’ phenomenon.

Safe Passage: Life Jackets on the Konzerthaus, Berlin

Life jackets left behind by refugees when they reach the shores of the Greek island of Lesvos adorn the columns of Berlin’s landmark Konzerthaus in a poignant installation completed on February 15th, 2016. Weiwei retrieved the jackets himself and in doing so, was present as even more refugees landed. Drawing attention to the humanitarian crisis, the project provides a striking visual representation of the scale of the problem, with the 14,000 jackets standing out in safety orange.

Forever Bicycles: Scotiabank Nuit Blanche, Toronto

3,144 interconnected bicycles come together into one big 3D structure in Toronto’s Nathan Phillips Square in this reinterpretation of Weiwei’s ‘Forever Bicycles’ exhibition. Presented by Scotiabank’s Nuit Blanche in 2013, the sculpture is made of frames from China’s biggest bicycle brand, and represents the rapid changes that are taking place in the nation and across the world.

Er Xi: Silk Dragons at Le Bon Marché, Paris

Figures from Chinese mythology blend with symbolism from Ai Weiwei’s own portfolio in ‘Er Xi’ (Child’s Play), a serene exhibition of three-dimensional white silk and bamboo sculptures at Paris’ Le Bon Marché department store. The display combines 2,000-year-old tales told to Chinese children with the kite making tradition, presenting the narratives in the front store windows and continuing them in the atrium with interpretations of Shan Hai Jing woodcuts.

An Archive: 6,830 Tweets on Rice Paper

Tweets may seem ephemeral and unimportant in the grand scheme of our culture, but what if they were carefully preserved for future generations as a real documentation of the current era? With ‘An Archive,’ Weiwei makes his own history of 6,830 Twitter posts dating back to 2005 into a tangible chronicle of his thoughts, printing them on rice paper sheets and laying them out like a traditional Chinese textbook. “Social media is annoying and distracting in certain ways because we are familiar with an older lifestyle,” says the artist. “The world today is very different. You can sit at your computer and, within minutes, you can see the best ideas and research on any topic. This is in conflict with our old habits, but there can be nothing better than this. Human beings are not created equal and we have never had that opportunity. Technology, especially with computers and the internet, has gone further than anything else in leveling the field.”

Modern Japanese Architecture: Sunny Minimalism by Tomohiro Hata

Expertly blending the minimalist aesthetics of traditional Japanese architecture with modern sensibilities to meet the needs of contemporary residents, architect Tomohiro Hata graces each of his cleverly-designed homes with his own distinctive style. Haha is particularly skilled at producing sunny, airy residences that feel luxurious, dynamic and fresh despite tight budgets, challenging sites and building regulations.

Modern Japanese architects have found creative ways to enable privacy in densely packed urban residential areas without cutting off access to sunlight, and to balance a cozy cave-like atmosphere in one part of the home with an airy, almost entirely open facade. In the case of Tomohiro Hata’s ‘Re-Slope House,’ the plot is set into a rocky Kobe hillside, cutting off access to light and air in the back half of the house.

Hata’s adaptive design is a wedge-shaped metal volume that follows the slope of the hill, placing oversized windows at the front and inserting wooden platforms inside for varying access to the light. Three open-plan terraced platforms mimic an oversized set of stairs, stepping from a sunny room adjacent to the windows down into the more private rooms. Skylights let the sun pierce through to the back of the home, and sliding glass doors offer access to a top-floor terrace and a set of metal scaffolding on the hillside for plants. The street-facing facade is windowless; nearly all of the glass looks out onto the landscape, blocking the interior from the view of neighbors.

The narrow profile of this plot of land in Nagoya created a challenge for Hata in designing a single-family residence that feels open and spacious, yet also private. The architect’s solution was to create a sharply angled, jagged silhouette pointing most of the windows up to the sky. The series of voids created by alternating pitched roofs brings sunlight in from all directions at various times of day as well as entirely walled-in courtyards.

The clever layout lets the occupants look out without providing passersby with a view into their home, creates a dynamic flow of foot traffic inside and has a far more interesting appearance from the curb than a simple box. The use of simple metal cladding keeps costs down and gives the home a minimalist, streamlined vibe.

A perfectly clean, crisp white terrace that looks almost like a pristine glass cube from the street is tucked into a dingy alleyway in Greece as part of optical shop c_29 / optimist. The airy space by 314 Architecture Studio modernizes the classic Greek aesthetic, with the products tucked into prismatic sculptural furniture.

A creative firm called McBride company is anticipating the day when the sale of both medical and recreational marijuana becomes legal nationwide, and has designed a concept for a national chain of cannabis retails stores called Pineapple Express. “The industry needs to provide a sales experience that reflects the evolving perception of marijuana,” says CEO Pat McBride. “The store design and atmosphere we created offers consumers a space that incorporates all the elements of great retail design, but addresses the unique display and service challenges faced by the cannabis retail industry. Our goal was to make this a true retail experience, meaning customers should feel completely comfortable and entertained, while also safe and secure. Some elements of cannabis shops today have the opposite effect, especially when the focal point is a long consultation counter where customers must wait to be helped.”

Shoppers feel like they’re walking into a tropical greenhouse as they enter the Mit Mat Mama maternity store in Barcelona by architect Román Izquierdo Bouldstridge. Emphasizing a feeling of freshness, harmony and natural beauty, the store consists of a modular system of wooden ladders stretching up to the ceiling that are used to display plants. The scheme adds visual interest without blocking views of the entire space.

Vertical sheets of white fiberglass hang from the ceiling of SND Fashion Store in Chongqing, China to create an undulating canopy that utterly transforms the entire interior. Shanghai-based studio 3GATTI gets a little catty in their explanation for the design, saying “We used a very thin white translucent fiberglass material because of its fire resistance and the way it reacted to light, thus creating a ceiling landscape that would be a spectacular source of beauty and emptiness; perfect for every fashion victim.”

Grave Footings: Modern Bridge Built on Thousands of Headstones

When the tide is low in the Delaware River, an unlikely sight emerges from the water: gravestones in various states of decay, serving to bolster the columns of a bridge spanning above.

The Betsy Ross Bridge is a modest continuous-truss structure most people drive across without giving it a second thought to the graveyard remnants below. Its otherworldly source materials, however, can be seen both along the riverbanks in the foundations of the bridge itself.

The Monument Cemetery in Philadelphia held the remains of 28,000 people before it was condemned by the city and given over to Temple University. The land was turned into a parking lot in the 1950s, 8,000 bodies moved to new marked graves and 20,000 unclaimed corpses shifted to a mass burial site.

The limestone and granite grave markers, however, represented a significant and useful resource, well suited to erosion-reducing riprap and column-footer foundations for and around a nearby bridge connecting New Jersey and Philly. Some were ground into rubble or have since eroded, but on the surfaces of many of these stones remain names, dates and other details still visible to those who would seek to unbury their past (images by K. Scott Kreider).

A group of architects teamed up to produce sculptural modern cat furniture for the Giving Shelter fundraiser, which donated its proceeds to the non-profit, cat-focused organization FixNation. The same attention to detail that you’d see in a human house was applied to these structures , many of which combine cat comfort with functionality for their human owners.

Caviar Warehouse to Modern Home: 14 Converted Residences

You wouldn’t mind living in a stable, boathouse, boiler room, post office or even a wartime bunker once they undergo modern renovations like these, contrasting the original historic architectural elements with smooth new wood surfaces and lots of glass. A former caviar warehouse in New York City gets a lantern-like sunken courtyard, a bridge connects two old brick food factory buildings, a Victorian church goes contemporary and priests party it up in a seminary turned retirement home.

If not for the incongruously new and modern deck positioned adjacent to the entrance, you’d never imagine that this wartime bunker in Belgium is actually a functional residence. Architecture studio B-ILD transformed the half-buried structure into a vacation retreat big enough to sleep four people, but made no attempt to disguise its original purpose, leaving most of it stark and unfinished.

Two brick buildings in a former bakery warehouse complex stretch out to each other from across verdant courtyard with the addition of a new wooden bridge. What was once the Golden Crust Bakery in Melbourne is now a luxury residence large enough to house a Brady Bunch-like extended family, with the teenagers in one building and the parents with their younger children in the other.

Stable to Off-Grid Home, Spain

A crumbling stone stable in a remote area of western Spain is now an off-grid home with the help of Madrid-based studio Abaton. Oriented to maximize solar heat gain, the home sits within the restored stone exterior, its deep glazed windows hidden behind operable stable doors acting as shutters. A freshwater swimming pool in the front doubles as an irrigation tank.

A glass-walled courtyard sinks from the landscaped rooftop of a former caviar warehouse in Manhattan by Andrew Franz into the renovated interior, acting as an oversized skylight. A retractible roof lets air flow into what was previously a poorly ventilated and ill-lit space. Within the living quarters, modern elements contrast with original factory materials, like a staircase made from the old roof joists.

Look beyond the copious animal print and oversized dog paintings to the architectural bones of this Victorian-church-to-home conversion in London by Gianna Camilotti architectural studio. While the design is a bit heavy-handed on the contemporary additions, the beautiful timber elements and windows of the original structure still shine.

Et tu, Brutalism? ‘Experimental Home’ Now a Modern Roman Ruin

Photographers traveling to photograph the ruins of Rome are generally so distracted by ancient remnants they naturally overlook this unique decaying structure on the outskirts of the city: the ‘Casa Sperimentale’ (Experimental House) created as a model to study interactions light, space and geometry at 1:1 scale.

Designer and shutterbug Oliver Astrologo sought out this decaying relic, which has gone into further decline since the death of its designer, Giuseppe Perugini, in the 1990s. A work of concrete, metal and class, the asymmetrical dwelling pushes out in unexpected directions and frames surprising spaces.

As with many abandonments, signs of decay are showing, vandalism has further deteriorated the site and structure while wild plants continue to encroach as well. Figures in the photographs both help give the unusually-sized spaces and details a sense of scale, while also adding a layer of human emotion to the shots.

The building is a product of its times, drawing on planes-in-space Modernism and thick concrete Brutalism, almost as if famous architects from these stylistic traditions got together to make a pavilion or playground. And today, that is what it effectively is: a semi-enclosed space for urban explorers to climb and document.
