Album: Panopticon [2004] Post-Metal, Atmospheric, Post-Rock, Sludge, Experimental, Avant-Garde 1. So Did We [0:00 – 7:30] 2. Backlit [7:30 – 15:14] 3. In Fiction [15:14 – 24:12] 4. Wills Dissolve [24:12 – 30:59] 5. Syndic Calls [30:59 – 40:39] 6. Altered Course [40:39 – 50:37] 7. Grinning Mouths [50:37 – 59:04] Panopticon is the third full-length album by Los Angeles, California based post-metal band Isis, released by Ipecac Recordings in 2004. The album’s title is derived from philosopher Jeremy Bentham’s panopticon prison ideal and philosopher/historian Michel Foucault’s later allegorical appropriation of the concept. The liner notes also include quotes from technology writer Howard Rheingold and futurist Alex Steffen; as a concept album, Panopticon’s focus is on the proliferation of surveillance technologies throughout modern society and the government’s role in that spread. Critical response to Panopticon was generally very warm; as it followed 2002’s critically acclaimed Oceanic, many reviewers were quick to hold the two in comparison. The consensus was that Panopticon represented a progression, of sorts. The album’s sound continued Isis’ departure from the strictures of sludge and metal — which had been the hallmarks of their earlier material — and continued along the trajectory of post-metal, achieved by heightened use of melody and clean vocals. Band members Jeff Caxide — bass guitar Aaron Harris — drums Michael Gallagher — guitar Bryant Clifford Meyer

Tidying Up Art: Messy Masterpieces Made Neat & Clean

03 Jan

[ By WebUrbanist in Art & Installation & Sound. ]

The Swiss are known for leading an orderly existence, so you can imagine their frustration at grandiose works of German art and the excesses of their French neighbors as well.

Ursus Wehrli is fighting back, organizing everything from parking lots and pine branches to alphabet soup and classic artworks of masters present and past, collected in a series of (humorous but thought-provoking) books about cleaning up all aspects of life.

No one is safe from his exacting eye, precise brushstrokes and poignant photography as he sweeps a Van Gogh bedroom scene out of sight in one stroke and crushes a Postmodern Campbell’s soup can in the next. Jackson Pollock, beware!

Not even childrens’ sandboxes or Chinese signs are safe from this process of global reorganization – but while some things gain order from the process, others (like letters) lose meaning and devolve into absurdity. Even the stars themselves are in reach.

Ultimate Wooden House Made of Jenga-Like Stacked Beams

27 Dec

[ By Steph in Architecture & Houses & Residential. ]

Jenga House 1

Explore the seemingly endless platforms and hidden nooks of this Jenga-like house, conceived as an example of “ultimate wooden architecture” by Sou Fujimoto Architects. Located in Kumamoto, Japan, ‘Final Wooden House’ consists of massive wooden blocks randomly stacked together with irregularly shaped openings covered in glass.

Jenga House 2

The architects were inspired by primitive conditions before architecture, like cave dwellings, where humans made the most of the surroundings as they found them.

Jenga house 3

Forget conventional rooms and staircases – this home is like a massive playhouse, requiring the inhabitants to climb from one block to another. The wooden blocks offer all manner of supports for various activities, but you’ll have to use your imagination to determine just how to use each one.

Jenga house 4

Of course, climbing around inside this minimalist jungle gym requires care, an able body, and perhaps a hard hat. Getting from one area to another in the dark might be an intimidating task. The house may not be terribly practical, but what it lacks in livability, it makes up for in pure fun.

A Camera Too Good Not To Be Made For A Pro

01 Aug

Imagine a camera that has the dynamic range to capture the sun and night time stars all in one exposure, all while sporting an impressive 112 megapixel resolution. The folks at Spectral Instruments are toying with the idea of making one of their $ 100,000+ cameras for a pro photographer. What photographer wouldn’t want to explore the possibilities with a camera made for the heavens and enjoy a sensor that can produce a 300dpi  35 inch square print from a 95mm x 95mm sensor.  Add a comment on the video and email zeke@specinst.com with your vote of who you’d like to see use such a camera.
Shameless plug… thanks in advance for your vote :)
