Radbahn Berlin: 6-Mile Sheltered Bike Path to Run Under City Train Line

A long unused strip of space weaving through Berlin is set to become a bicycling boulevard, sheltered by the tracks above and lined with bike service stations, recreation areas and food trucks. This latest rails-to-trails project has six miles of space to work with, connecting major roads and multiple neighborhoods. Completely disused aside except as illegal parking and intermittent strips of sidewalks and seating, the area below the U1 line is ripe for rehabilitation.

As in other cities with similar programs, the Radbahn aims to serve not only as a traffic corridor and green trail but also to activate adjacent spaces. Pocket parks and commercial vendors are expected to spring up along the route, and side extensions can bring bikers down to adjacent waterways and other natural features.

Meanwhile, riders can enjoy a rain-free experience (it rains over 100 days per year in Berlin). Cyclists looking to take the train can also park their ride in sheltered spaces below the rails near stations. The minimum width and consistent coverage of the tracks above provide for a sufficiently wide trail from start to finish, while studies have shown that train noise below tracks is reduced as compared to adjacent space.

Per the proposal, the goal is “revitalize the former space along the iconic U1 line to a pulsating urban artery. It thereby acts as a playground for modern mobility, innovation and leisure activities.” In typical German fashion, the project designers and engineers have already extensively documented and mapped opportunities throughout the route, which you can explore in greater depth by visiting their website.

Tenba updates Roadie line of rolling cases

Bag manufacturer Tenba has updated its Roadie line of rolling cases which come with features such as a removable camera inserts and an exterior pocket for a portable battery. The Air Case model features a rigid shell that can be safely shipped or checked at the airport. Tenba says the Roadie bags were designed with a high-end luggage aesthetic to ensure they look professional yet don’t draw unwanted attention to the gear inside.

The cases come with a water-repellent exterior of 1680-denier ballistic nylon, YKK RC-Fuse zippers and aircraft-grade aluminum luggage handles. A rain cover provides additional protection in wet weather and the wheels are user-replaceable.

Benro launches ProAngel line of compact travel tripods

Benro has announced the ProAngel line of ultra-lightweight and compact travel tripods and monopods. The ProAngel tripods are compact enough to fit into most small and medium sized bags and come with a single leg locking mechanism, allowing users to open the tripod leg sections with a single twist. Secure locking only requires half a turn.

The two-section telescoping center column provides additional height when needed and has a standard 3/8″-16 thread to attach a photo tripod head. ProAngel tripods and monopods are available for most types of camera, from smartphones (Series 0) and compact system cameras (Series 1 & 2), to full frame DSLRs (Series 3 & 4).

Nikon launches Arcrest protection filter line

In addition to the AF-S Nikkor 28mm F1.4E ED, 8-15mm F3.5-4.5E ED fisheye and AF-P 10-20mm F4.5-5.6G VR lenses Nikon also announced the new Arcrest line of ‘professional-grade’ protection filters. The Arcrest filters are available in 67mm, 72mm, 77mm, 82mm and 95mm diameters and, according to Nikon, can survive heavy impacts while only having a minimal impact on image quality.

The filters are 2mm thick and come with special coatings that minimize color balance disturbance, reduce ghosting and flares and repel water/oil/dirt. Nikon says they are also less prone to ghosting when shooting night scenes.

It appears that at least for now the Arcrest line will only be released in the Japanese market. Prices range from ¥9,680 ($ 88) for the 67mm filter to ¥25,799 ($ 234) for the largest diameter version. The product page on the Nikon Japan website offers a good selection of sample images and comparison shots against filters from competing brands.

New Zeiss CP.3 XD Cine lens line stores metadata, is aimed at budget filmmakers

Zeiss announced a new family of cinema primes geared toward ‘low budget’ productions at the NAB 2017 show in Las Vegas. The CP.3 XD Cine line includes a total of ten lenses that cover full frame. Meant to replace the CP.2 line, these new lenses are more compact than their predecessors.

The ‘XD’ in the name stands for ‘eXtended Data’, which refers to the lenses’ ability to store metadata like distortion and shading info when shooting – info that can greatly aide a visual effects artist in post. You can read more about it here. According to Zeiss production manager Christophe Casenave:

“Cine lenses that provide metadata are relatively expensive and, up until now, distortion and shading had to be manually measured – a time-consuming and expensive process. With ZEISS eXtended Data, we are offering Hollywood technology for everyone, providing small film teams with new creative opportunities.”

While this lens line is aimed toward the cost-conscience filmmaker, to the average consumer, prices will likely still seem expensive – each XD lens will likely cost between $ 5000 and $ 8000. However Zeiss is also offering non-XD versions of the CP.3 line for slightly less cash.

Several of the non-XD lenses will be available as soon as June and July, while the eXtended Data versions will ship in the fall.

The ten compact prime lenses provide metadata and enable the correction of distortion and shading. For the first time, even low-budget productions can employ visual effects.

No matter if it is Star Wars, Harry Potter or Avatar: these days, just about every film features special effects. For many small film productions, having visual effects in their movie would be a dream come true. Unfortunately, making the image fit the look of the footage has required expensive tools – until now. At the NAB Show in Las Vegas, ZEISS presented new metadata technology that makes this possible: the company has equipped its new ZEISS CP.3 XD compact lens family with ZEISS eXtended Data.

ZEISS eXtended Data supports and enhances /i-Technology

What exactly is this? “ZEISS eXtended Data is the first metadata technology which stores the lens distortion and shading – for every single frame,” explains Christophe Casenave, Product Manager at ZEISS. “Moreover, all /i-Technology metadata are recorded, including the focus distance, aperture value and depth of field, which is supported by most cameras.” This makes the technology ideal for working with visual effects: by using the metadata, it just takes a few clicks to modify the image generated on the computer to fit the lens characteristics, and to then splice it together with the footage to create a realistic image. Distortion and shading can be corrected or even amplified in post-production.

“It used to be that only big blockbusters could take this approach,” says Casenave. “Cine lenses that provide metadata are relatively expensive and, up until now, distortion and shading had to be manually measured – a time-consuming and expensive process.” However, since ZEISS has incorporated the technology into its compact CP.3 XD cine lens family, low-budget productions can now take the same approach to creating their own special effects. “With ZEISS eXtended Data, we are offering Hollywood technology for everyone, providing small film teams with new creative opportunities.”

An end-to-end solution: cooperation with Ambient and Pomfort

With the ZEISS CP.3 XD, ZEISS not only offers the lenses with metadata, but has also given thought to storage and processing. It has teamed up with partners in the industry: the company Ambient has developed the MasterLockit Plus system together with ZEISS. It records all metadata along with a time code in case the technology is not supported by the camera. “This way truly everyone can work with ZEISS eXtended Data, no matter what equipment they use,” says Casenave.

Thanks to the cooperation with the software developer Pomfort, distortion and shading can be modified on the set in real-time using the Pomfort tool LiveGrade Pro. The film crew already gets a sense of what the final look will be during the shoot. The film clips and lens data can be consolidated and organized with Silverstack, Pomfort’s file manager.

ZEISS plans to further expand the new metadata technology in the future. “Our customers will then be able to upgrade to the new version, making the CP.3 XD a long-term investment,” says Casenave.

Compact and light-weight

In addition to the metadata, filmmakers have even more reasons to get excited about the new lens family: the ten prime lenses between 15 and 135 millimeters cover full-frame. As is typical for ZEISS, the image has a clean, crisp look, and ZEISS says the image quality is excellent. “These lenses deliver outstanding results, even in light situations with a large dynamic range, i.e. highlights and shadows within the same scene,” says Casenave. The maximum speed of the seven focal lengths between 25 and 135 millimeters is T2.1, the 15, 18 and 21 millimeter lenses have a speed of T2.9. With a front diameter of 95 millimeters, the lenses are light-weight and compact. They are particularly well-suited for hand-held filming or shooting with gimbals, Steadicam or drones. ZEISS has also improved focusing: the manual focus is now noticeably smoother. According to ZEISS, it is comparable with the ZEISS Master Primes and can also be operated with a small motor. The focus rotation angle is 300°. The lenses are equipped with an interchangeable mount so that they can be used on almost any camera. In addition to the ZEISS CP.3 XD, there is also a version available without metadata: the ZEISS CP.3.

Initially, a limited number of ZEISS CP.3 XD and CP.3 lenses will be available at dealers.

Oberwerth launches Donau line of leather lens pouches

German manufacturer Oberwerth, best known for its high-end leather camera accessories and bags, has launched its new Donau line of leather lens pouches. Like other Oberwerth products, the pouches are handmade in Germany from soft cowhide leather. A surface finish provides stain protection and should preserve the natural material’s shine for a long time to come. In the interior the pouches are lined with non-pilling wool felt to keep your valuable glass scratch-free.

The Donau pouches come in sizes S, M, L and XL to accommodate lenses of various dimensions but at a width of 9.5 cm/3.74 in and a diameter of 9 cm/3.54 in even the biggest XL version seems more suitable for a large prime rather than fast tele-zooms lenses. The Red Line: Moody Neon Light Installations in Remote Places

Red neon lights arranged in geometric shapes or casting eerie illumination onto darkened trees almost seem like a natural phenomenon in the vein of the aurora borealis, captured by photographers who manage to be in the right place at the right time. A glow coming from a slit in a snowy landscape or just under the surface of the sea hints at the presence of life forms just out of sight.

ExoLens offers Zeiss-branded accessory lenses for iPhone 7, adds ‘Prime’ lens line

ExoLens has announced that it will sell its Zeiss-branded accessory lenses for iPhone 7, and has also introduced a second product line. Calling its existing lineup of lenses with Zeiss optics the ‘Pro’ line, it emphasizes their high quality construction while adding the ‘Prime’ line for ‘artistic expression and non-technical social sharing.’ ExoLens does not mention support for the iPhone 7 Plus and its dual camera modules.

Three Pro lenses are offered: the Wide, Telephoto and Macro-Zooms first introduced in January. Each will come with an ExoLens Edge machined aluminum mount, as well as a key ring loop. Launching for iPhone 7, 6/6 Plus and 6s/6s Plus in December, the wide-angle and telephoto kits will also sell for $ 199.99 and $ 249.99, respectively.

Following the launch of these two kits, ExoLens will release the Pro Macro-Zoom Lens in January for $ 199.99 bundled with the lens mount bracket. This kit will include the Zeiss Vario-Proxar 40-80 T macro-zoom lens for taking photos of items that measure between 3cm and 12cm.

The Pro macro lens kit will be joined by Telephoto 2x, Wide-Angle 0.6x, and Super Wide-Angle/Macro combo lenses in the PRIME range, all of which launch in the first quarter of 2017; prices for the Prime kits haven’t been released yet.

The ZEISS Vario-Proxar 40-80 T* macro-zoom lens has a variable focal length of 40 to 80 millimeters. “In combination with the optics of the smartphone camera, turning the ring does not result in an increase or reduction of the field of view,” Product Developer Vladan Blahnik from ZEISS explains. “Instead, the ring functions much like a manual focus with which different planes can be set. If photographers want to shoot objects that are three to five centimeters away, they turn the ring to the right as far as it will go, and to the left for objects that are five to eight centimeters away.” This allows users to capture objects measuring three to twelve centimeters filling the complete field of view and capture astonishing details beyond what is visible to the human eye to put you impossibly close to the subject. The PRO Macro-Zoom Kit will be available for iPhone 6/6s, iPhone 6 Plus/6s Plus, and iPhone 7 in January for $ 199.99.

The ExoLens PRIME product line allows for artistic expression and non-technical social sharing to step up your iPhone photography and videography game. Sigma has announced three new full-frame lenses for its Global Vision Line. The long-rumored and long-awaited 85mm F1.4 Art, the 12-24mm F4 Art, and the 500 F4 DG OS HSM Sport.

The 85mm F1.4 Art has been designed with resolution and bokeh in mind. A stronger HSM AF motor produces 1.3x the torque of the previous setup hopes to improve autofocus speed as well. The lens will be available in late October at a price $ 1199.

The Sigma 12-24mm F4 DG HSM Art is a new ultra-wide-angle zoom. It too features the stronger AF module, and also features the largest aspherical glass mold in the industry, which helps produce minimal distortion, flare and ghosting. The lens will be available in late October for $ 1599.

The Sigma 500mm F4 DG OS HSM Sport uses lightweight materials like carbon fiber and magnesium alloy and features a dust and splash resistant construction. In Nikon mount it features a brand-new electronic diaphragm. The Sigma 500mm F4 Sport lens, in Canon and Sigma mounts, will be available in late October. The Nikon mount will be available in late November. The 500mm F4 will retail for $ 5999.

Boasting the renowned Global Vision image quality from center to edge, the new Sigma 12-24mm F4 features the largest aspherical glass mold in the industry, offering photographers an ultra-wide angle zoom with virtually no distortion, flare or ghosting. Encompassing the long history of Sigma wide angle lens development expertise, the new 12-24mm F4 performance highlights include constant F4 brightness and the brand new Sigma AF system with 1.3X torque boost. Sigma 500mm F4 DG OS HSM Sport Lens – Pro Fast-Aperture Prime Super Telephoto
The flagship Sigma super telephoto 500mm F4 Sport lens incorporates the very latest in Sigma optical technology and innovation. Designed for the professional sports and wildlife shooter, the ultra-durable lens features magnesium alloy components, a carbon fiber hood, a water and oil resistant front element, and is dust and splash proof. The 500mm F4 features a drop-in rear filter slot for polarizers, UV and other critical filters. To help prevent damage during shooting and maintenance, the lens is also compatible with the exclusive SIGMA Protector LPT-11 (sold separately).

The lens incorporates two FLD and one SLD glass elements, while the optimized power distribution helps minimize spherical aberration and axial chromatic aberration. The optical system also effectively minimizes transverse chromatic aberration, which can affect the edges of the shots taken in the telephoto range.
