Radbahn Berlin: 6-Mile Sheltered Bike Path to Run Under City Train Line

23 Jun

[ By WebUrbanist in Architecture & Cities & Urbanism. ]

A long unused strip of space weaving through Berlin is set to become a bicycling boulevard, sheltered by the tracks above and lined with bike service stations, recreation areas and food trucks. This latest rails-to-trails project has six miles of space to work with, connecting major roads and multiple neighborhoods. Completely disused aside except as illegal parking and intermittent strips of sidewalks and seating, the area below the U1 line is ripe for rehabilitation.

As in other cities with similar programs, the Radbahn aims to serve not only as a traffic corridor and green trail but also to activate adjacent spaces. Pocket parks and commercial vendors are expected to spring up along the route, and side extensions can bring bikers down to adjacent waterways and other natural features.

Meanwhile, riders can enjoy a rain-free experience (it rains over 100 days per year in Berlin). Cyclists looking to take the train can also park their ride in sheltered spaces below the rails near stations. The minimum width and consistent coverage of the tracks above provide for a sufficiently wide trail from start to finish, while studies have shown that train noise below tracks is reduced as compared to adjacent space.

Per the proposal, the goal is “revitalize the former space along the iconic U1 line to a pulsating urban artery. It thereby acts as a playground for modern mobility, innovation and leisure activities.” In typical German fashion, the project designers and engineers have already extensively documented and mapped opportunities throughout the route, which you can explore in greater depth by visiting their website.

Tenba updates Roadie line of rolling cases

10 Jun

The cases come with a water-repellent exterior of 1680-denier ballistic nylon, YKK RC-Fuse zippers and aircraft-grade aluminum luggage handles. A rain cover provides additional protection in wet weather and the wheels are user-replaceable.

The new Roadie Roller 18, 21, Hybrid 21 and Air Case 21 all comply with most international and U.S. domestic carry-on regulations, while the Roadie Roller 24 is suitable for non-airline use only but can carry cameras and lenses along with flash and lighting systems. 70-200mm 2.8 lenses will fit standing vertically to maximize interior storage. More information is available on the Tenba website.

Press Release:

Tenba Roadies are sleek, discrete cases for uncompromising photographers and filmmakers that include some key “industry first” features like a removable camera insert, an exterior pocket for a portable battery, and an Air Case model with a rigid shell that can be safely shipped or checked at the airport. Roadies were designed with a high-end luggage aesthetic to ensure they look professional yet don’t draw unwanted attention to the gear inside.

Tethered Case Lid
Interior straps keep the lid upright when opened so it works as a mobile workstation, and they help the Roadie maintain a small footprint in tight environments.

Drop-In Tripod Carrier
This is Tenba’s quickest and simplest tripod carrier ever. Virtually any size tripod can be stored in just a few seconds. Also holds light stands when Roadie is being used for lighting gear.

Extra Bag Strap
A quick and hands-free way to attach a second bag to the Roadie, just like pilots and flight attendants do.

Leather Trimmed Handles
Padded top and side handles make the Roadie comfortable to carry even when fully loaded, and waterproof full-grain leather trim improves the grip.

Integrated TSA-Approved Security
The Roadie includes an integrated lock for the zipper on the camera compartment, plus an additional security cable and padlock to secure the case on location. Both locks are TSA approved.

Professional Features
Roadies are built to deliver on Tenba’s promise for durability, with a water-repellent exterior of 1680-denier ballistic nylon, YKK® RC-Fuse zippers and aircraft-grade aluminum luggage handles. For additional protection in wet weather, each bag includes a WeatherWrap rain cover. The user-replaceable wheels combine shock absorbing TPU with high carbon steel bearings so they are sure to roll smoothly and quietly over any surface.

The Roadie Roller 18, 21, Hybrid 21 and Air Case 21 all comply with most international and U.S. domestic carry-on regulations, while the Roadie Roller 24 is suitable for non-airline use. Roadies are available now at Tenba authorized resellers.

Introducing Roadie Air Case Roller 21, Roadie Roller 24, Roadie Hybrid Roller 21, and a Few Industry First Features

Introducing Our Checkable, Shippable, Uncrushable Carry-on Rolling Case
One model in the Roadie Collection, the Roadie Air Case Roller 21, utilizes Tenba’s patented layered wall construction to provide the protection of a hard-shell case at a fraction of the weight. It can withstand more than 400 pounds stacked on top, so it will ensure equipment protection when the case needs to be checked unexpectedly, like when airline overhead space has filled up, or when flying on a small regional jet.

Introducing the Roadie Roller 24
Due to its larger-than-carry-on dimensions, the Roadie Roller 24 can efficiently carry large systems in a single case. Cameras and lenses can be stored along with flash and lighting systems, and 70-200mm 2.8 lenses will fit standing vertically to maximize interior storage.

Introducing the Roadie Hybrid Roller 21
A comfortable backpack harness enables the Roadie Hybrid Roller 21 to be carried when terrain is not especially “wheel friendly,” such as on stairs or over sand or dirt.

Quick Access Battery Pocket
Available in all models except Roadie Hybrid Roller 21 and Roadie Air Case 21
The rear zippered pocket can hold a battery for charging mobile phones and other portable devices. Twin zippers allow cables to be easily threaded out of the pocket.

Removable Padded Camera Insert
Included with all Roadie Roller models except Roadie 18
The removable insert allows a camera and 2-3 lenses to be carried independently inside a smaller shoulder bag. The insert can be paired with Tenba’s Packlite 10 travel bag to create a portable camera bag solution, allowing the user to leave the rolling case behind and just carry a core camera kit.

Nikon launches Arcrest protection filter line

03 Jun

In addition to the AF-S Nikkor 28mm F1.4E ED, 8-15mm F3.5-4.5E ED fisheye and AF-P 10-20mm F4.5-5.6G VR lenses Nikon also announced the new Arcrest line of ‘professional-grade’ protection filters. The Arcrest filters are available in 67mm, 72mm, 77mm, 82mm and 95mm diameters and, according to Nikon, can survive heavy impacts while only having a minimal impact on image quality.

The filters are 2mm thick and come with special coatings that minimize color balance disturbance, reduce ghosting and flares and repel water/oil/dirt. Nikon says they are also less prone to ghosting when shooting night scenes.

It appears that at least for now the Arcrest line will only be released in the Japanese market. Prices range from ¥9,680 ($ 88) for the 67mm filter to ¥25,799 ($ 234) for the largest diameter version. The product page on the Nikon Japan website offers a good selection of sample images and comparison shots against filters from competing brands.

German manufacturer Oberwerth, best known for its high-end leather camera accessories and bags, has launched its new Donau line of leather lens pouches. Like other Oberwerth products, the pouches are handmade in Germany from soft cowhide leather. In the interior the pouches are lined with non-pilling wool felt to keep your valuable glass scratch-free.

The Donau pouches come in sizes S, M, L and XL to accommodate lenses of various dimensions but at a width of 9.5 cm/3.74 in and a diameter of 9 cm/3.54 in even the biggest XL version seems more suitable for a large prime rather than fast tele-zooms lenses. Press Release:

Hawkesmill England Launches New Small Range of Luxury Camera Bags

West Sussex, England (December 5th 2016) – Today, Hawkesmill England, one of the leading high-end camera accessories brands, announced it is rolling out a line of smaller luxury camera bags. Currently, Hawkesmill makes a stylish large camera messenger bag, suitable for needed gear and a 15” MacBook Pro. These new bags are designed to be used with smaller cameras, i.e., mirrorless, Leica, or a DSLR and single lens attached.

Hawkesmill utilizes superbly luxurious materials, such as Scottish Harris Tweed and triple-layered waterproof canvas, while the firm’s innovative dual-d ring closure and trigger hook system ensures that all of the gear it holds is safe and secure, while also being quick to access. A second d-ring acts as an overflow ring, for those occasions when a little too much has been packed.

Similar to the large bags, the small line also includes a removable insert that is replaceable, ensuring a lifetime of use, as well as a rear sleeve that keeps valuables, such as passports, tickets, memory cards and money, against your body and safe.

There are five models currently available: the classic all-black Bond Street; the olive Jermyn Street, sporting a traditional Harris Tweed design; the distinctive 18oz canvas Marlborough with English vegetable tanned leather; the black body with charcoal Harris Tweed flap Sloane Street; and, in a first for camera bags, the Regent Street, an all-Horween Chromexcel version, known as one of the finest leathers in the world.

The overall dimensions of each of the new Hawkesmill bags are 10? wide x 8? high x 5? deep (25.4cm x 20.3cm x 12.7cm), while the weight varies slightly by model, from 2.5lbs to 3.5lbs (1.13kg to 1.58kg).

All of the small canvas bags sell for £329.00, while the small leather Regent Street is £469.00. Along with the large bags, these are all handmade in England with a lifetime warranty against defects.

The company also makes luxurious leather camera neck straps, card holders and passport holders.

The Red Line: Moody Neon Light Installations in Remote Places

26 Nov

[ By SA Rogers in Art & Installation & Sound. ]

La Linea Roja

Red neon lights arranged in geometric shapes or casting eerie illumination onto darkened trees almost seem like a natural phenomenon in the vein of the aurora borealis, captured by photographers who manage to be in the right place at the right time. A glow coming from a slit in a snowy landscape or just under the surface of the sea hints at the presence of life forms just out of sight.

red-line-2

red-line-4

red-line-3

‘La Linea Roja’ by photographer Nicolas RIVALS carries on a longstanding tradition of introducing artificial lights to natural spaces for high-impact temporary art installations, but adds a little something extra in the form of a strikingly limited color palette, moody skies, black lines of tree silhouettes and surprisingly natural-looking compositions.

La Linea Roja

red-line-7

La Linea Roja

La Linea Roja

The Paris-based photographer installed the lights in various landscapes while on a trip through Spain, capturing the effect using long-exposure photographs.

La Linea Roja

Here’s what RIVALS has to say about the series:

“A red line woven over a journey through Spain, to connect Man with nature. A red line to fix a moment of poetry. Unreal scenes which existed for a night to disappear in the morning. An installation left as a proposition to the natural world. A luminous harmony between will and chance. Between tribute and sacrilege. Between the beautiful and the range. An aesthetic research on shapes engaging in dialogue with an asymmetrical nature.”

06 Oct

ExoLens has announced that it will sell its Zeiss-branded accessory lenses for iPhone 7, and has also introduced a second product line. Calling its existing lineup of lenses with Zeiss optics the ‘Pro’ line, it emphasizes their high quality construction while adding the ‘Prime’ line for ‘artistic expression and non-technical social sharing.’ ExoLens does not mention support for the iPhone 7 Plus and its dual camera modules.

Three Pro lenses are offered: the Wide, Telephoto and Macro-Zooms first introduced in January. Each will come with an ExoLens Edge machined aluminum mount, as well as a key ring loop. Launching for iPhone 7, 6/6 Plus and 6s/6s Plus in December, the wide-angle and telephoto kits will also sell for $ 199.99 and $ 249.99, respectively.

Following the launch of these two kits, ExoLens will release the Pro Macro-Zoom Lens in January for $ 199.99 bundled with the lens mount bracket. This kit will include the Zeiss Vario-Proxar 40-80 T macro-zoom lens for taking photos of items that measure between 3cm and 12cm.

The Pro macro lens kit will be joined by Telephoto 2x, Wide-Angle 0.6x, and Super Wide-Angle/Macro combo lenses in the PRIME range, all of which launch in the first quarter of 2017; prices for the Prime kits haven’t been released yet.

Press release:

Itasca, IL – October 5, 2016 – ExoLens®, accessory brand dedicated to elevating the mobile photography category, announces the launch of the ExoLens PRO and PRIME ranges. Each line is designed for a specific consumer, which allows everyone from the novice to the professional to join the mobile photography movement. Leading the collection, is the ExoLens® PRO line for the iPhone 7, which feature Optics by market leading brand, ZEISS, to offer truly professional-grade mobile lenses to photographers, artists and journalists to seriously step up your mobile photography game.

First to market will be the ExoLens PRO Wide-Angle and Telephoto Kits for iPhone 7. With more than 170 years of experience engineering professional optics, ZEISS has gained unrivaled trust among professional photographers and cinematographers in the industry. The series of high-performance lenses is a new breed of mobile photography optics that will allow the massive community of iPhone photographers and videographers to tell a deeper story with gold-standard gear. All PRO Kits come with the new machined aluminum ExoLens Edge mount, which features an integrated cold shoe accessory mount (compatible with accessories such as external video light) and key ring loop.

The ExoLens PRO Wide-Angle Kit with Optics by ZEISS features a ZEISS Mutar™ 0.6x Asph T* Wide-Angle lens, which provides virtually no distortion and exceptional edge-to-edge contrast, resulting in an image quality that is unmatched by any other iPhone accessory lens. The ExoLens PRO Telephoto Kit with Optics by ZEISS features a ZEISS Mutar™ 2.0x Asph T* Telephoto lens. The Kit offers photographers a narrow depth of field to add a beautiful bokeh to the background while focusing attention on the subject. The focal length of the telephoto allows the contours of the face to appear more natural and closer to real life, and is ideal for street photography, portraits or capturing events. The Telephoto Kit will be available for iPhone 6/6s, iPhone 6 Plus/6s Plus, and iPhone 7 in December for $ 249.99.

ExoLens PRO Macro-Zoom Kit with Optics by ZEISS features the ZEISS Vario-Proxar 40-80 T* macro-zoom lens. The ZEISS Vario-Proxar 40-80 T* macro-zoom lens has a variable focal length of 40 to 80 millimeters. “In combination with the optics of the smartphone camera, turning the ring does not result in an increase or reduction of the field of view,” Product Developer Vladan Blahnik from ZEISS explains. “Instead, the ring functions much like a manual focus with which different planes can be set. If photographers want to shoot objects that are three to five centimeters away, they turn the ring to the right as far as it will go, and to the left for objects that are five to eight centimeters away.” This allows users to capture objects measuring three to twelve centimeters filling the complete field of view and capture astonishing details beyond what is visible to the human eye to put you impossibly close to the subject. The PRO Macro-Zoom Kit will be available for iPhone 6/6s, iPhone 6 Plus/6s Plus, and iPhone 7 in January for $ 199.99.

The ExoLens PRIME product line allows for artistic expression and non-technical social sharing to step up your iPhone photography and videography game.
