Lemuro launches line of high-end iPhone accessory lenses

02 Jun

With a few exceptions, like Moment or Zeiss products, accessory lenses for smartphones tend to be rather cheap and more often than not, produce low quality images. For those photographers who don’t mind spending a bit more on high-quality accessory lenses, there is now a new alternative: German brand Lemuro has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund mass production of its line of iPhone accessory lenses.

Currently four Lemuro lenses are on offer: a 60mm equivalent tele “portrait” lens, a 25mm 10X macro lens, a 18mm equivalent wide angle lens and an 8mm equivalent fisheye.

The lens bodies are crafted from aluminum and attach to a leather-clad protective case via a metal lens mount. Currently cases are available for the iPhones X, 7, 7 plus, 8 and 8 plus but Lemuro says Android cases are in the making and should be expected later in 2018.

Lemuro’s campaign is already fully funded, so, barring any unforeseen complications, production will go ahead. You can still pre-order on Kickstarter until June 22 and a pledge of of 75 Euros (approximately $ 88) will get you the starter kit with one case and lens. The pro kit with case and all four lenses will set you back 225 Euros (approximately $ 262). Delivery of the Kickstarter orders is scheduled for November 2018.

You can find more information and sample images on the Lemuro Kickstarter page.

Tether Tools unveils TetherPro line of USB-C cables

19 Jan

Tether Tools, a manufacturer of wired and wireless equipment for camera tethering, has introduced its line of TetherPro USB-C cables for photographers shooting tethered with cameras or computers that feature a USB-C connection.

With faster data-transfer rates and the ability to insert connectors in any direction, USB-C is a great improvement over previous versions of the USB-standard. However, the variety of existing cables and connectors means that photographers using USB-C cameras or laptops often have to revert to using adapters, hubs or dongles to connect devices.

The TetherPro line has been designed to eliminate the need for all those adapter solutions. It features 12 cables, all available in either black or orange and purely intended for data transfer—meaning they are not suitable for powering USB-C devices. Tether Tools says its cables are constructed to the highest possible USB specifications, allowing for fast and reliable data transfer.

“Our goal is to provide photographers with the optimal cable to meet their unique needs for tethered photography, without the use of dongles, whether they have a USB-C port on their camera, computer, or both,” said Josh Simons, Tether Tools CEO. “We’ve worked diligently to optimize the performance and are excited to bring TetherPro USB-C cables to the market after extensive development and testing.”

The line includes USB-C to USB-C versions and USB-C to USB-A cables for those using USB-C Cameras, such as the Hasselblad H6 or X series, Panasonic GH5 or Sony a7R III. There are also TetherPro USB-C cables for photographers using USB-C computers with USB 2.0 or 3.0 cameras. And if you’d like a longer cable, the 15-foot USB-C to USB-A adapter might be worth a closer look.

All of the cables all retail for between $ 25 and $ 57 depending on configuration and length. For more information or specific pricing, visit the Tether Tools website.

The designs reflect extensive research into pet needs and behaviors, including a bed designed to be stuffed with old clothes, blankets and towles to help dogs feel comfortable and familiar around their human family.

Aside from pet sleepers and carriers, the LURVIG line features an array of brushes, bowls, leashes, bag dispensers spanning eating, playing, sleeping, traveling, walking.and other cat and dog activities.

Arri repurposes internal filter tech to create a line of heavy-weight ND filters

24 Aug

Cinema equipment powerhouse Arri has introduced a new line of full spectrum neutral density filters that are designed to be used in front of the lens. The company says it has drawn on its expertise creating internal filtration systems for its ALEXA Mini and the AMIRA movie cameras to produce the new line of eight strengths that range in optical density from 0.3 to 2.4 (1 to 8 stops).

Arri says it has used coatings to reflect infrared wavelengths, which should help maintain a neutral color balance and good contrast, and that the filters are made with Schott B270i glass for its purity and even, parallel surfaces. With new technologies such as high resolution capture and output, as well as HDR viewing, better quality filters are required at the shooting stage, says Arri.

These filters will be available in 6.6 x 6.6in/167.6mm x 167.6mm and 4 x 5.65/101.6mm x 143.5mm sizes will weigh a solid 0.609lbs/276.6g and 0.316lbs/143.5g respectively. No prices have been released yet, but these should be some of the best ND filters on the market when they do launch.

For more information, see the specs below or visit the Arri website.

Manufacturer Information

Full Spectrum Neutral Density Filter

The new ARRI Full Spectrum ND filter serves as the front line of image control. A natural succession to ARRI’s high quality products, this external FSND filter not only provides protection but has a palpable effect on image quality.

Due to the increasing standards of modern deliverables, current industry image quality demands such as Ultra HD, High Dynamic Range, and Wide Color Gamut, and an increase in customer and end-user demand for external filters of the highest quality, ARRI was inspired to create their own FSND external filter. ARRI is already very familiar with premium filters; the ALEXA Mini and the AMIRA cameras come equipped with an internal FSND filter that is highly respected in the industry and purely color neutral. Now, the unsurpassed dynamic range of ARRI’s camera sensors do not have to be diminished or distorted by external filters of lesser quality.

Main Features:

  • Renowned Full Spectrum ND Filters from ALEXA Mini and AMIRA now as front filters
  • Highest contrast and truest color transmittance for HDR capture
  • Multiple layers of coating for easy cleaning and prolonged filter life
  • Long-lasting CORDURA® pouches lined with MICRODEAR® anti-static cleaning cloth
  • Fast inventory tracking through unique, laser-engraved barcodes

Additional Features:

  • Optical quality, Schott B270i glass with completely flat and parallel surfaces for image sharpness
  • Anti-reflective coating for contrast and top HDR deliverables
  • Hard coating for prolonged filter life
  • Hydrophobic and oleophobic coating for easy and fast cleaning
  • C-Shaped, black edge prevents chipping and reflection
  • Anti-static premium pouch for safe storage
  • Engraved, unique barcode for fast inventory tracking and proof of ownership
  • Purely color neutral for true image capture

Miggo launches Agua line of waterproof camera and drone bags

03 Aug

Miggo, the smartphone and photography accessory makers who brought us the Pictar iPhone camera grip among other innovative products, have returned to crowdfund the launch of a new Agua line of waterproof bags designed for DSLRs as well as the DJI Mavic and Spark drones.

There are three models in the series, which are all made from a matte-finish tarpaulin material and offer the IPX3 environmental protection standard.

The Agua Versa backpack is designed for carrying photographic gear but can easily be converted into a backpack for daily use by removing the “doc-bag” camera insert. The Versa can be carried as a backpack, sling bag or x-position style and comes with external charging system for mobile devices.

The main compartment comes with laptop and tablet pocket, and there are several smaller pockets as well. Three water-proof outer pockets can hold a large variety of smaller items, and the rigid bottom offers impact protection when setting the bag down. The bag can hold a Canon 5D-sized full-frame DSLR and two F2.8 lenses, including a 70-200 F2.8 and a flash.

The Versa’s strap system can be adjusted for sling-style use. Inside your gear is protected from the elements.

The Agua Drone Lander is made from the same waterproof material as the Versa, but it was made to function as a carrier for the DJI Mavic or Spark drones. The latter and accessories are are protected by a padded three-layer insert, and an integrated landing mat doubles as a work surface. The Drone Lander is carried in the sling position, and an additional diagonal strap offers better stability for long-distance carrying.

The third model in the line, the Agua Sling, combines a compact design with storage capacity for a 5D-sized DSLR and three lenses, including a 70-200 F2.8 and a flash gun. A padded strap allows for sling-style carrying and gear is accessed through a side-opening. Like the Versa, the Agua Sling comes with a water-proof front pocket for personal items and an external charging port for mobile devices. The main compartment offers a laptop pocket.

The Drone Lander comes with a landing mat. Padded inserts protect your drone and accessories.

We’ve had a chance to use the Agua Versa backpack for a couple of weeks, and our first impression is indeed very positive. The backpack is well-made, and the strap system is comfortable to wear and allows for a lot of adjustment.

There are plenty of external and internal pockets to help you organize all sorts of small things, such as batteries, memory cards and other accessories. My 14″ Acer just fits into the internal laptop sleeve and the camera insert holds a DSLR and a couple of lenses no problem. When the insert is removed, the bag also works well as a rugged day pack, with more than enough space for a change of clothes for when you bike to work.

You should be aware that access to your gear is only available from openings in the sides, but once you’re used to that, getting your stuff in and out of the bag is easy and quick. You can now pre-order the Agua bags on Indiegogo from $ 100 for each model with the early bird special, which sounds like an interesting deal if you are in need of a waterproof bag for your imaging gear.

Finishing the line: Nikon 28mm F1.4E ED sample gallery

27 Jun

The Nikon 28mm F1.4E ED has come to the market more than twenty years after the rare and expensive 28mm F1.4D was released in the early ’90s. It’s the latest lens to join the company’s F1.4 professional prime lens lineup, which now has 24mm, 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 58mm, 85mm and 105mm options – it looks pretty complete to us.

The 28mm F1.4E adopts an electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism, meaning aperture control is fully electronic, as opposed to Nikon’s older G and D lenses, which feature a mechanical lever on the mount for this purpose. In the real world, this should result in greater exposure accuracy when shooting at high continuous burst speeds.

The lens is very well-built, features dust and weather-sealing, and the minimum focus distance is less than a foot from the sensor or focal plane.

We’ve had ours around town, to the beach, a car show and a wedding to suss out what its capable of – find out for yourself.
