13th annual D.U.M.B.O. Art Under the Bridge Festival® (Sept 25 to Sept 27, 2009)
www.dumboartfestival.org/press_release.html

The three-day multi-site neighborhood-wide event is a one-of-a-kind art happening: where serendipity meets the haphazard and where the unpredictable, spontaneous and downright weird thrive. The now teenage D.U.M.B.O. Art Under the Bridge Festival® presents touchable, accessible, and interactive art, on a scale that makes it the nation’s largest urban forum for experimental art.

Art Under the Bridge is an opportunity for young artists to use any medium imaginable to create temporary projects on-the-spot everywhere and anywhere, completely transforming the Dumbo section of Brooklyn, New York, into a vibrant platform for self-expression. In addition to the 80+ projects throughout the historical post-industrial waterfront span, visitors can tour local artists’ studios or check out the indoor video_dumbo, a non-stop program of cutting-edge video art from New York City and around the world.

The Dumbo Arts Center (DAC) has been the exclusive producer of the D.U.M.B.O Art Under the Bridge Festival® since 1997. DAC is a big impact, small non-profit, that in addition to its year-round gallery exhibitions, is committed to preserving Dumbo as a site in New York City where emerging visual artists can experiment in the public domain, while having unprecedented freedom and access to normally off-limit locations.

Star Wars IV Survives: Real Life Tatooine Located in Tunisia

06 Nov

[ By WebUrbanist in Global & Travel & Places. ]

Yes, you can spend the night in Luke Skywalker’s home, see the hermit habitat of Obi-Wan Kenobi up close, and view other remnants of the original Star Wars movie via a series sets turned since turned into long-standing habitable buildings (contemporary on-location photos above by Könczöl Gábor and maciekke).

(Images by Hoylen Sue)

Los Apos provides an introductory guide with coordinates should you find yourself wandering Tunisia – meanwhile, here are some of the highlights of the journey, including bits and pieces of the fictional Mos Eisley and Espa.

(Images by Eckart and Michael)

Some of these buildings survive the first film trilogy, while others were rebuilt for the second series (or first, depending on how you look at it). But why? Because, in many cases, locals saw the structures as entirely serviceable and kept using them for housing, hotels, shops, storage and more.

(Images by Bernard Gagnon and Jean-Marc Matthey)

Some of the locations cater to fans: “In Matmata you can actually sleep in Luke’s home. The Hotel Sidi Driss served as the interior of the Lars homestead. Aunt Beru’s kitchen is still there, but except for some fiberglass and wooden frames, and the fresco on the dining room ceiling, you won’t find any props. Even so, it is easy to get excited when sitting in the very same dining room that the Lars family used. The hotel also has a well stocked bar with lots of Star Wars memorabilia and a Star wars inspired menu.”

(Images by Roger Noguera Arnau)

Savvy fans will recognize even building-free locations where Sandcrawlers roamed, Tusken Raiders pounced or Stormtroopers attacked. These are, one might say, the landscapes you are looking for. Still, whether the trip will spoil the fun or enhance the fantasy all depends on the traveler.

An around-the-world time lapse journey celebrating our Sacred Earth. Six years in the making… seven continents… 24 countries. Photographed & Edited by Sean F. White www.seanwhite.net Original score by Roy Milner http Full details and locations shot-by-shot: www.TERRA-SACRA.com Versión en español http Twitter: www.twitter.com Facebook: www.facebook.com — My life as a filmmaker has blessed me with the privilege of seeing some of the most surreal and timeless places on the planet. These images of our Sacred Earth set to music are my way of sharing some of the magic I’ve experienced along the way… “Terra Sacra” ~ Latin for Sacred Earth. Terra Sacra Time Lapses is a short film featuring remote landscapes and ancient monuments from around the globe. These images were photographed during my assignments and personal travels between 2006-2012. I’ve combined my favourite shots from these trips into non-narrative film that touches on a theme close to my heart: Sacred Earth. The visuals are driven by an original score by composer Roy Milner (roymilner.com). The six-minute film is a journey through three distinct Acts: (I) Primordial Earth (II) Past meets Present and (III) Eternal Universe. This film is a personal project to share the beauty and awe I witnessed at these locations. I hope viewers will be moved by the intangible power of our Terra Sacra. Interview with Igor Klimov: Still Life Photographer from Tallinn

It is always a pleasure to talk to a person who is a true fan of his occupation. Last week I was lucky enough to speak to Igor Klimov – a still-life (and not only) photographer from Tallinn, Estonia. His photographs speak for themselves – and if I would need to describe his works with one single word, it would Continue Reading

Embrace the change in your life

16 Oct

Samantha moves away

I met Sam when she was kind enough to model at one of our photography workshops a few years ago, since then we’ve done well over a dozen shoots and have become close friends.  I love talking to Sam, sometimes we get lost in conversation for hours, if my camera is nearby I’ll pull it out, if it’s not I don’t, but it’s during days like this that I usually shoot my favorite images.  We were talking about change, and dreams, and boys and her moving to Boston (which just happened this past week).  I jotted down some of my favorite things she shared… hope she doesn’t mind!

“I am learning to embrace the change in my life.  It is taking me to new places and doing new things and in the journey I am discovering so much.” -Sam

Click for a larger image

Embrace the change in your life.
Because change is the only constant. Changing relationships, seasons, moods, friends, our surroundings.
Sometimes I feel  as though I am addicted to change, like I wanna see how many different people I can be.
Because if change is the only thing I can count on, then I better get use to it.
Get use to the heartbreak, get use to being let down, get use to new experiences, get use changing your mind- and then changing it all over again.
if possibilities are endless, then i am never the same person twice.
It’s like a cycle really, the cycle of change.
Change your clothes, change your attitude , change your perspective.
How many different ways can i see this world?
Change your outlook-what do you  think you know?
Life is magic, if you let it be.

-Sam Law

“The world is just a dream, because guess what, when you’re dreaming it’s just your subconscious, just rolling, when you’re awake that subconscious is still rolling. Everything we see we have so much connected to it. Isn’t it interesting how sometimes when you start telling stories with people, your idea of the story changes, your perception on it changes or all of the sudden the memory is different because someone is all, no I saw it this way. We all have these complex perceptions and where they are rooted, in the human psyche, if this is just a dream (which I strongly believe it is) then I’m creating it.  If I realize I’m dreaming it.  If I’m aware of that subconscious that’s playing all the time then I can train it.” -Sam

“The world is the best teacher” -Jake
“Only if you’re the best student.” -Sam
“I get worried. Poor students, get hard life lessons.” – Jake
“Have you ever heard the quote, in school you study and then you take the test but in life you take the test and then study where you f*%$ @# up?” -Sam

“I think I have the best life ever, and I don’t even know it sometimes. Like sometimes I just forget. We have the luxury of daydreaming and wonder about how we’re going to fix our problems. We just get to think.” -Sam

Villa Savoye: Classic Corbu House Comes to Life in LEGO

04 Sep

One of the most iconic buildings of the 20th Century, the Villa Savoye by Le Corbusier outside of Paris, France has long been a symbol of the International Style in Modern Architecture – now one you can rebuild at home in LEGO form.

In fact, a model version is perhaps the best way to understand this structure, as its accomplishments are not all visible from ground-level photographs – particularly the compelling sectional progression and three-dimensionally-complex rooftop deck.

The structure embodies Corbu’s core Five Points regarding residential design, being (1) supported by structural columns and elevated to create space below, (2) topped by a garden, reclaiming additional outdoor space displaced by the building, (3) open floor plans, (4) horizontal fenestration and (5) freely-designed facades. Of the Architecture Landmark Series by LEGO, this may be the most instructive model to date for young aspiring architects (ages 12 and up, that is!).
