Olympus has released its financial results for the first quarter of the company’s fiscal year, giving credit partly to its Imaging Systems Business for a 12.3% increase in net sales year-on-year. Its OM-D and Pen series cameras saw a 25% increase in sales volume, helping to compensate for a sliding compact market. Read more

The Panasonic Center in Osaka has installed a photo booth that uses 120 Lumix DMC-GH4 cameras to create a three-dimensional impression of the occupants, which can then be turned into a plaster figurine. Panasonic claims that what makes its booth stand out is that the ‘scan’ is created in just 1/1000sec. That means the subjects can be in motion and the image will still be sharp. Read more

Pelican Imaging has released a set of re-focusable pictures taken with its light field camera for smartphones. Instead of placing an array of microlenses between the sensor and the main lens, Pelican uses an array of main lenses – each with a sensor behind it. While many American cities have experienced the pains of a large population shift from the urban core to suburbs, there’s a poignancy to the abandoned storefronts in downtown Rochester, New York. The city’s name is inextricably tied to the name Eastman Kodak. Swiss photographer Catherine Leutenegger spent time photographing Rochester and Kodak’s headquarters, first in 2007 and again in 2012, and answered a few of our questions about the project. According to a report by Engadget, Apple has hired Nokia’s head of Lumia imaging, Ari Partinen. Partinen sent out a tweet saying today was his last day at Nokia and that in June he’ll be starting ‘a new chapter in Cupertino’. In a later tweet he confirmed the company he’ll be working for in Cupertino is indeed Apple. Learn more
