16 October, 2013 – Sony Alpha 7R Hands-On & More

16 Oct

We have three new articles being published today. The first is a brief report on the three new cameras that Sony has just introduced. These are going to shake up the industry a bit (as Sony tends to do).

The second article is a hands-on report written following my spending a few days earlier this month working with the exciting new Sony Alpha 7R.

The third is a new essay from our regular contributor Alain Briot titled In Priase of Amateurs.

We’re at the IFA trade show in Berlin this week, checking out new tech aimed at photography enthusiasts. One stand-out is the latest flagship smartphone from Sony, the Xperia Z1 (which had the codename of ‘Honami’). Sony’s certainly put the focus on imaging here with an F2.0, 27mm equivalent lens and a 20.7 megapixel, 1/2.3″ BSI-CMOS sensor, as well as a new physical shutter button. Read about our first impressions of the device on connect.dpreview.com.

Hands-on with the Nokia Lumia 1020

12 Jul

TC4x3AS250x0~cms_posts-6384275680-cameraapp03.jpg

Today Nokia unveiled the Lumia 1020, its flagship 41MP camera-centric smartphone for Windows Phone 8. Aimed squarely at photo enthusiasts, the Lumia 1020 employs a large and extremely high resolution 41MP imaging sensor that we first saw in the ground-breaking 808 PureView. However, the 1020 has the decided advantage of running on the Windows Phone 8 platform instead of the end-of-life Symbian OS. Our sister site, connect.dpreview.com is at the launch event in New York and has published a detailed hands-on look at the new phone. Click through for more.

Eye-Fi’s X2 wireless SD cards, which provide your camera with a Wi-Fi connection have been around for a few years, and now the company has come out with a new range of ‘mobi’ cards. The Eye-Fi Mobi, which is available as a 8GB/Class 10 SDHC card for $ 50 and a 16GB/Class 10 SDHC card for $ 80, lacks some of the features of the X2-series but offers the ability to send full-resolution photos wirelessly as they’re captured to iOS devices and Android devices. Click through for our hands-on article over at connect.dpreview.com.

Just posted: Our hands-on preview of Canon’s latest mid-range SLR, the EOS 70D. From the outside it looks very similar to the EOS 60D, but on the inside it sports a brand-new ‘Dual Pixel CMOS AF’ sensor that promises much-improved focusing in live view and movie mode. It also borrows most of the best bits of Canon’s existing SLRs, including the AF module from the EOS 7D, the articulated touchscreen from the EOS 700D, and built-in Wi-Fi from the EOS 6D. In our detailed preview we take a closer look, and try to get to grips with its innovative sensor technology. Click through to read all about it.

Just posted: Our detailed Fujifilm X-M1 hands-on preview. Fujifilm’s latest miniaturised mirrorless model represents something of a design departure from its previous X-system cameras, eschewing the traditional control dials seen on the X-E1 and X-Pro1 for a more contemporary control layout. It also forgoes an eye-level viewfinder, making do with a tilting rear screen instead. Is this a betrayal of everything Fujifilm owners have grown to love about their cameras, or is there more to the little X-M1 than meets the eye? Read our preview to find out.

Has the venerable Sunpak 120J bare bulb flash been reincarnated? By a world-famous company, no less?
