Just published – a quick Pentax 645D sample gallery

17 Nov

Just Posted: A few weeks back we spent a little time with the Pentax 645D – just long enough to grab a small gallery of ‘real world’ samples using the FA 645 55mm F2.8 standard lens. The 40 megapixel 645D, which took an unprecedented 5 years to progress from announcement to production, is the company’s first digital medium format camera. We wanted to see how practical it was to use the 645D ‘in the field’ as a replacement for a smaller sensor SLR, and – aside from an aching shoulder after a day of lugging it around – we were pretty impressed with what we saw. Until we get the 645D back into the studio to complete our testing, check out our quick 24-shot gallery after the link (or click here to jump straight to the gallery page).

Just Posted: Sony NEX-7 pre-production samples gallery

26 Sep

Just Posted: Sony NEX-7 pre-production samples gallery. We’ve been shooting at the press launch of Sony’s latest cameras, affording us a chance to shoot with a pre-production NEX-7. We’ve put together a samples gallery in a variety of lighting conditions, giving an idea of what the camera will be capable of. We’ve also tried its sweep-panorama mode in circumstances where conventional panorama shooting would have been challenging. We’ll be adding to the gallery over the coming days.

Nikon J1 real-world samples gallery

22 Sep

We’ve published a gallery of 23 images shot with the Nikon J1. We’ve shot a selection of images using the Nikon J1 – the simpler of the company’s two ‘Nikon 1’ cameras. Combined with the 1 Nikkor VR 10-30mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens, we’ve taken a variety of real-world images in a variety of light conditions. Given all the controversy the J1 and V1 have generated, we thought it made sense to look at some of its images. Raw files to follow in the coming hours.

Windows Live Photo Gallery 2011 – Interactively Straighten a Skewed Photo

08 Aug

Interactively straighten or un-straighten a photograph via Windows Live Photo Gallery 2011

Windows Live Photo Gallery 2011 can quickly attempt to straighten a photograph by pressing one button (“Edit” tab of the Ribbon, “Quick Adjustments” section, “Straighten” button), useful if you don’t perfectly line up subjects in your digital camera’s viewfinder or LCD screen. However, this one-click tool may not always work as desired. For example, you may have a photograph with multiple conflicting elements – if one element appears straight, the others may appear crooked, and you may want a particular element straightened and Photo Gallery 2011 has other ideas.

Alternatively, for artistic reasons you may want to “un-straighten” a perfectly straightened photograph to make elements appear crooked for visual effect. For example, a city skyline photograph may be adjusted by skewing the horizon line to the left or right. In some cases, such as if the photo was taken from the top of a large building, this can make the photo appear as if it was taken from the air by helicopter – some may call this taking an artistic license :)…

Just posted: Panasonic DMC-FZ47 preview samples gallery

07 Aug

Just Posted: Panasonic DMC-FZ47 preview real-world samples gallery. We’ve had Panasonic’s latest FZ-series superzoom for the past few days. The FZ47 (FZ48 in Europe) is based around a 12MP CCD sensor and offers a 24x zoom, covering a range equivalent to a 25-600mm lens. We shot in a variety of situations, including a floodlit football match, to show what that combination can and can’t do. We’ve also prepared a series of images at all the camera’s different ISO settings and taken test shots using several of its noise reduction settings, to give a feel for the image quality options available on this JPEG-only model.

Just Posted: Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 samples gallery

14 Jul

Just Posted: Our AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 G sample gallery. We’ve had access to Nikon’s latest inexpensive 50mm prime lens for a couple of weeks and have put together a 41-image sample gallery to show some of what it can do. The AF-S G version means there’s finally an inexpensive Nikon 50mm lens that will autofocus on the company’s entry-level bodies, such as the D40, D60, D3100 and D5100. Here we’ve shot it using both the DX D7000 and the FX D3S to show how it performs on both formats.

Olympus E-P3 samples gallery updated with revised settings

07 Jul

We’ve added three additional images to our samples gallery for the Olympus E-P3 with revised processing. Following concerns expressed about the levels of noise reduction and sharpening being applied by the camera’s default settings, we have re-processed the images with the sharpening and noise reduction minimized. Having confirmed that re-processing raw files in-camera gave the same results as shooting natively at these settings, we re-processed three of our gallery images to allow side-by-side comparison with the default settings.
