Nikon D7500 gallery update: more photos, Raw conversions

05 Jul

The Nikon D7500 is proving to be an outstanding general-use stills body. As we’re finishing up the full review on the camera, we wanted to share some additional images as well as a handful of Raw conversions (made using beta profiles in Adobe Camera Raw).

You’ll have to wait juuuuust a little longer to find out how the D7500 stacks up against the competition, but if you couldn’t already tell from the photos in the gallery, we’re having a lot of fun shooting with it.

Going wide on a budget: Nikon AF-P 10-20mm F4.5-5.6 DX sample gallery

04 Jul

Nikon’s AF-P 10-20mm F4.5-5.6 DX is the company’s latest lens specifically designed for its crop-sensor camera bodies. It may have a plastic mount, but with a 35mm-equivalent focal range of 15-30mm, it is a versatile yet affordable lens for those looking for a wider view than the kit lens has to offer without breaking the bank. See how it performs from the inner streets of Seattle to the remote, sandy beaches of Washington’s coast.

Canon EOS 6D Mark II pre-production sample gallery

29 Jun

Just shy of its fifth birthday, the Canon EOS 6D was ripe for replacement. Its successor will ship in August, but we had a chance just a few weeks ago to put it to work photographing some of the most stunning landscapes in the US.

Take a look at how the Canon EOS 6D Mark II fared on a recent Canon-organized trip to Yellowstone, and stay tuned for a full gallery once we’re able to get our hands on a full-production model.

Please note that the samples in this gallery were shot with a pre-production camera. As such, image quality may not be representative of final shipping cameras (although it is likely to be extremely close), and at Canon’s request, Raw files are not available for download.

Finishing the line: Nikon 28mm F1.4E ED sample gallery

27 Jun

The Nikon 28mm F1.4E ED has come to the market more than twenty years after the rare and expensive 28mm F1.4D was released in the early ’90s. It’s the latest lens to join the company’s F1.4 professional prime lens lineup, which now has 24mm, 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 58mm, 85mm and 105mm options – it looks pretty complete to us.

The 28mm F1.4E adopts an electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism, meaning aperture control is fully electronic, as opposed to Nikon’s older G and D lenses, which feature a mechanical lever on the mount for this purpose. In the real world, this should result in greater exposure accuracy when shooting at high continuous burst speeds.

The lens is very well-built, features dust and weather-sealing, and the minimum focus distance is less than a foot from the sensor or focal plane.

We’ve had ours around town, to the beach, a car show and a wedding to suss out what its capable of – find out for yourself.

Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 15mm F1.7 sample gallery

23 Jun

Sure, it’s been a minute since the Panasonic 15mm F1.7 was introduced. But three years later it’s still a solid option for a Micro Four Thirds shooter looking for a fast, compact, wide-angle prime. And what better time to travel light than the longest days of the year? We spent some of our long hours of sunlight with the 15mm F1.7 in hand – by land, and by sea.

Fujifilm X-A3 sample gallery

20 Jun

Despite its modest MSRP, Fujifilm’s entry-level X-A3 has dual control dials, a tilting touchscreen, and the same 24MP sensor from the company’s flagship models – but with a traditional Bayer color filter array instead of X-Trans. We’re pushing through our full review, but in the meantime, check out how it performs with a variety of the company’s prime and zoom lenses.

Gallery: Shooting a music festival with the Nikon D7500

08 Jun

The Nikon D7500 uses the same sensor and processor as the APS-C flagship D500, as well as the same high-res metering sensor. Though the 51-point AF system is unchanged from the D7200, the camera is seriously capable when it comes to photographing quickly moving subjects: It can shoot as fast as 8 fps with continuous autofocus and has an impressive buffer of up to 50 continuous Raw files.

We brought it along to an all day music festival in Seattle’s SoDo neighborhood where challenging lighting coupled with lively musicians thrashing around gave us the perfect chance to push the camera’s abilities. We mostly shot using 3D tracking in various auto exposure modes and initial impressions are positive.

Of course, these images could benefit from a little time in ACR. Once we get Raw support, we’ll add conversions as well as more samples.

Canon EF-S 35mm F2.8 IS STM Macro sample gallery

30 May

Canon’s new EF-M 35mm F2.8 IS STM Macro comes in at a reasonable $ 349 MSRP, and offers 1:1 magnification (very close to the front of the lens, admittedly), a claimed four stops of image stabilization and the stepper motor should work great for when you switch from stills to video. We’ve sampled it for both macro and general photography, as its 56mm equivalent focal length makes it a good option for Canon APS-C users who are looking for a modern ‘normal’ lens. Take a look at how it holds up in our sample gallery.
