Adobe Digital Negative (DNG) Format

The public archival format for digital camera raw data

Raw file formats are extremely popular in digital photography workflows because they offer creative professionals greater creative control. However, cameras can use many different raw formats — the specifications for which are not publicly available — which means that not every raw file can be read by a variety of software applications. As a result, the use of these proprietary raw files as a long-term archival solution carries risk, and sharing these files across complex workflows is even more challenging.

The solution to this is Digital Negative (DNG), a publicly available archival format for the raw files generated by digital cameras. By addressing the lack of an open standard for the raw files created by individual camera models, DNG helps ensure that photographers will be able to access their files in the future.

Hundreds of software manufacturers such as Apple and Google have developed support for DNG. And respected camera manufacturers such as Leica, Casio, Ricoh, Samsung and Pentax have introduced cameras that provide direct DNG support. Learn more ›

In addition to the Digital Negative Specification, Adobe provides the free Adobe DNG Converter (Windows® | Mac OS), which easily translates raw files from many of today’s popular cameras.

29 Dec

Using a Hasselblad 500 c/m, I go over some of the basic operation of the camera, and–most importantly–the significance and benefit of medium format film photography. Yes…I said film 🙂 Sorry about the sound quality (wind noise). Weather wasn’t cooperating at all! A second, more complete addition to this video is coming soon.

shared:AdobeLogo.png

Alongside its ACR and Lightroom updates, Adobe has extended the specifications of the DNG format, including the creation of a more compact, Lossy DNG option. The format has also been extended to respect in-camera cropping and allow for the inclusion of full HDR data and the non-image areas around merged panoramas. We spoke to Lightroom Product Manager, Tom Hogarty, about the changes made in v1.4 and the reasons behind them.

4 September, 2012 – Medium Format Image Quality from a sub-$1k Compact?

06 Sep

Is the headline above hyperbole, or am I just laying out some troll bait? Neither actually. That’s why I put a question mark after it.

The new Sigma DP2 Merrill is destined to be one of the most polarizing cameras in a while. It is not without its flaws (none terribly serious if IQ is your primary need), but it also produces some of the highest resolution images that I’ve seen short of a top-of-the-line DSLR with a 1st rate prime lens attached, or from a medium format back.

What have I been smoking? Read my Sigma DP2 Merrill review and find out.

"Every time I go back to a module I had already seen, I learn additional things.  I have never seen tutorials that have the excellent mix of what the features are,
how to use them, enough of the under-the-hood information
and concepts so that I can utilize the features creatively and efficiently,
and just enough humor to keep the motivation
 level high.  Wow!"

[MODIFIED] File Extensions – ZIP File Format

25 Aug

Zip archives defined, including how they are created and unpacked.

The .ZIP extension signifies that a file is a ZIP archive. This allows people to package a complete game, screensaver, application, electronic book, or whatever as one larger file instead of multiple smaller files, for example before sending them via e-mail. ZIP files are used often in Windows environments, and you will also see them on Mac and Un*x-based machines.

ZIP files can be created by a third-party external creation tool, but most modern operating systems have the ability to create basic .ZIP files internally without downloading such software. The process takes a group of files and mashes them (“zips” them) together into one “archive” file, sometimes reducing the amount of space the ZIP file takes on the hard drive (“compressing”). After the ZIP file is transferred, the recipient takes the ZIP file and “unzips” it, causing the original files to appear on their hard drive. Again, while third-party unzipping tools exist, most operating systems can do so directly….

If so, don’t manually retype web page names or URLs when you can copy them to the clipboard and paste them into another application or webpage.

The “My CopyFixer” extension for Mozilla Firefox lets you copy the URL and/or title to the clipboard by pressing Ctrl+C when no text is selected.
