Blackmagic releases firmware 1.8 for all cinema cameras

Blackmagic Design, maker of a range of high-end compact cinema cameras, has announced a firmware update for all of their models. Available today, the new firmware provides an entirely new code base for the Blackmagic cameras and will enable the company to roll out new features to their devices. The new update claims to provide improved performance and introduces a new user interface. Learn more

New Fujifilm X-series firmware adds direct instax printing

Fujifilm has announced a firmware update for three of its X-Series camera, allowing them to print images instantly from the instax Share SP-1 printer. The Fujifilm XQ1, X-M1 and X-A1 cameras updated with the new firmware will be able to send photos directly to the compact instax printer, rather than by way of mobile device as is currently the case. The firmware should be available in late June, and Fujifilm plans to add the feature to more cameras. Learn more

Nikon Coolpix A firmware 1.11 available

Nikon has issued a firmware update for the Coolpix A. Version 1.11 decreases minimum focus distance (in normal focus mode) and boasts improvements to autofocus acquisition. Other improvements are minor, including better battery performance during interval shooting. Get the update

Ricoh releases GR firmware 4.0

A new firmware updated for the Ricoh GR adds a ‘High Speed’ AF mode and claims to improve operational performance for aperture preview. Other additions include a ‘Shift Crop’ effect mode designed to reduce perspective distortion by removing a portion of vertically-oriented images, and improved stability when connecting via USB to a Mac. Leica T (Typ 701) gains updated firmware version 1.1

Leica has updated the firmware for its T (Typ 701) mirrorless camera to Version 1.1. In one of the stranger descriptions we’ve seen, Leica hasn’t given any specific details of what’s changed, saying instead that “you will get the complete scope of functions and performance as described in the manual of your camera”. Update: Olympus issues emergency firmware fix for E-P5

Update: Following on the release of a significant new v1.4 firmware update for the Pen E-P5 last week, Olympus has issued another fix. Version 1.5 reportedly addresses a problem introduced by 1.4 in which displayed values for shooting parameters did not change. Firmware v1.4 introduced improved Wi-Fi remote control functionality to the E-P5 and a ‘0 sec’ anti-shock setting. The latter was added to help prevent blurred images at certain shutter speeds – our main gripe when we reviewed the camera.

Olympus OM-D E-M10 and E-M1 get firmware updates

Olympus has issued new firmware versions for the OM-D E-M10 and E-M1. The E-M10 gets the same zero-second anti-shock mode recently added to the Pen E-P5 in an attempt to work around shutter shock problems. The E-M1 update adds a variety of new features, including several when used with Olympus OI.Share smartphone app. Learn more

Does the new Olympus PEN E-P5 firmware reduce image shake?

A year on from the camera’s announcement, Olympus has issued a significant firmware update for its PEN E-P5. The update not only adds a trigger-only ‘cable release’ mode to its Wi-Fi functions, it also provides a feature to combat the biggest problem with the camera. The new ‘0 sec Anti-Shock’ option provides a work-around for the image shake that held the E-P5 back in our original review. Nikon issues firmware update for D800/D800E

Nikon has released firmware version 1.10 for its full-frame D800/D800E camera. This update includes support for CompactFlash memory cards greater than 128 GB, a host of feature adjustments and other bug fixes. Nikon also updated firmware for the UT-1 communication unit, two Coolpix models and Nikon 1 mirrorless cameras. Learn more

Fujifilm firmware brings swifter viewfinder and sundry features to X-E2

Fujifilm has released a firmware update for its X-E2 mirrorless camera, bringing its viewfinder performance up to the standard set by the X-T1. Firmware 2.0 also adds a choice over the color of focus peaking and the ability to apply Face Detection and EVF/LCD Setting to one of the customizable buttons. A ‘Suppressed Flash’ option has also been added. The viewfinder now operates at 200Hz, meaning a lag of just 0.005 seconds. The firmware is available for download from the company’s website.
