F-Stop Gear’s Kashmir camera bag is designed for women

04 Dec

F-Stop Gear has introduced Kashmir, a camera backpack designed specifically for women. Kashmir is billed as an ultra-light camera pack with a harness system and torso height adjusted to complement a woman’s body, something accomplished through the use of an Ultra Lite EVA-padded hip belt and what the maker says are ‘female specific S-shoulder straps’. The bag is being funded through Kickstarter. Read more

Anti-Object: A Public Bench Designed to be Everything-Proof

camden bench public design

While many individuals desire multi-functional and space-saving furniture, many cities want quite the opposite: an object that one can sit on but that foils attempts at anything from sleeping, littering and vandalism to street theft and drug-dealing.

camden uncomfortable urban bench

Designed by Factory Furniture and named after the city for which it was commissioned, the Camden Bench is largely (and fascinatingly) defined in the negative, its creators boasting what it cannot do rather than what it can do, made to “resist criminal and anti-social behaviour.” It all sounds well and good in theory, but in practice: does this approach constitute  a public service or an unnecessarily prohibitive way to design urban furniture?

Made of cast concrete, the bench’s ridged top and sloped surfaces make it hard to lie down on and help keep skateboarders at bay, while its smooth finish is made to be graffiti-resistant. Its solid sides feature no slots or crevices in which dealers could hide drug stashes, while its slight recesses allow sitters to slide their bags safely behind their legs. Its smooth finish and lack of gaps also help keep it clean – dirt has nowhere to accumulate and water washes grime away.

As Frank Swain muses on Medium, “it a strange artifact, defined far more by what it is not than what it is. The Camden Bench is a concerted effort to create a non-object. [It] is strange kind of architectural null point. A piece of the city that by design will not interact with it in any way. It is a bench by the slimmest of margins – hardly comfortable, affording none of the qualities that would make it more than simply a place to sit. This is the bench’s sole concession to being part of the city, and it does it with the least conviction possible.”

One-of-a-Kind Dollhouses Designed by 20 Famous Architects

29 Oct

dollhouse competition designers

Some of the world’s best and brightest architects and designers, including Zaha Hadid, have come together to create a series of unique custom dollhouses to be auctioned for a disabled children’s charity KIDS.

dollhouses flashy weird design

The array of approaches is as impressive as the collection of contributors (a full list of the latter to follow). Some designs are flashy and playful, others abstract and metaphorical, and still others practical and innovative.

dollhouse concrete modular inserts

Starting on the more rigid and straightforward side of things, one concrete creation features plug-and-play rooms that fit into a framework, acting as a learning tool as well as a toy.

dollhouse stackable room variants

Another puzzle-inspired arrangement features stackable spaces that be configured in an innumerable variety of possible ways, creating a game out of iterating spatial relationships.

dollhouse inflatable playspace surprise

One of the more surprising design, at least in terms of thinking outside the (jack in the) box, is shown above before and after deployment.  It has faux facades that open to reveal a full kid-sized inflatable playspace. But it is not the only design with a surprise inside.

Android co-founder says mobile OS was originally designed for cameras

Andy Rubin, co-founder of Android, claims that the popular mobile operating system was originally designed for digital cameras, not phones. In an interview published by PC World, Rubin said that the original concept, as pitched to investors back in 2004, was for ‘a camera platform with a cloud portion for storing images online’. By the time Google acquired Android in 2005, however, the plan had changed and Android was developed for mobile handsets. Click through for more details and a link to the full story at PCWorld.com.
