07 Aug

[ By Steph in Gadgets & Geekery & Technology. ]

Smartphone Gadgets Main

As smart phones become even more integral to our everyday lives, extra gadgets that increase their functionality just get cooler and cooler. These 15 add-ons for iPhone and Android handsets include arcade housings for gaming, home security devices, photo lenses, sound amplifiers and even wind meters.

Canary Home Security Device

Smartphone Gadgets Canary Security

A device the size of a soda can pairs up with your smart phone to keep your home more secure. Canary contains an HD camera with night vision, motion sensors, a microphone, an accelerometer and sensors for heat, humidity and carbon monoxide. In other words, if there’s anything weird going on at your house, you’ll be notified immediately, from intruders to electrical fires. As soon as the device senses that something is amiss, it’ll send you a message, with options like “make a call” or “trigger siren.” Set to retail for $ 199, the device soared past its Indiegogo funding goal and should begin production shortly.

iCade Jr. Turns Phone into a Mini Arcade

Smartphone Gadgets iCade Arcade

The iCade jr. brings the feel of a (teeny tiny) arcade game to your iPhone. Featuring a joystick and four front buttons, plus four rear trigger buttons, the little cabinet is as functional as it is a conversation piece.

iPhone Photo Lens Dial

Smartphone Gadgets iPhone Photo Lens Dial

An old-fashioned looking dial on a rugged case spins to offer three different camera lenses to iPhone photographers, including wide angle, fisheye and telephoto (plus a bonus macro lens on the iPhone 5 version.)

Fling Game Controller for Smart Phones

Smartphone Gadgets Game Controller

A pair of mini joysticks for iPhone, Android or the iPod touch makes gaming more fun and interactive. The Fling Mini gives games an analog feel, with clear components that won’t block visuals on the screen.

Vavuud Wind Meter

Smartphone Gadgets Wind Meter

Cyclists, surfers, boaters and people who rely on wind power should take an interest in Vavuud, a wind meter you plug into your smart phone to measure wind speed and wind direction. Made of weather-resistant plastic, it’s been tested and calibrated in a professional wind tunnel and has a range of 1 m/s to 25 m/s. It retails for $ 44.99.

Glassless Bottles: Ice Beverage Containers Keep Cola Cool

02 Aug

[ By WebUrbanist in Design & Guerilla Ads & Marketing. ]

ice coke bottle design

No amount of insulation can hope to keep your beverage quite as cold as a bottle made entirely out of ice, as found in this limited-edition container design from a marketing firm working for Coca Cola.

Ogilvy & Mather of Bogota developed this entirely-iced bottle concept as a summer-worthy marketing method for Coke, currently released in Columbia and coming soon to Argentina, both places where hot summer weather packs a particularly hard punch.

ice melting coke glass

A simple label is wrapped around the frozen containers as the drink is poured and delivered. The bottle can then be left on the beach, thrown in the ocean or remain anywhere the remaining water (and sugar) can safely drain, keeping the process as mess-free as possible.

cool ice bottle design

Since these icey vessels dissipate on their own when you are done, leaving only a rubber-band bracelet behind, which means not having to worry as much about where and how to recycle your glassless bottles.

CTRL+Console: One Cool Video & Photo Editing App

CTRL+Console – Video and Photo Editing App

I have become a huge fan of Kickstarter and every so often you find a real gem of a project. Sometime ago I stumbled on to the CTRL+Console app (download link) and loved the idea. If you’re unfamiliar with the project check out CTRL+Console Kickstarter page, but note it is no longer active. In short the app acts as a GUI to a variety of shortcuts in Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, Quicktime and soon for Lightroom.

CTRL+Console - Adobe Premiere Pro Editor

CTRL+Console – Adobe Premiere Pro Editor

While a lot of Kickstarter projects feel or look like a do it yourself project this one is quite polished. The app was released yesterday on the Apple iTunes store and is now public. It is free to download with the Quicktime console being accessible out of the gate, but you’ll need to purchase/unlock additional editors with in the app. For the app to communicate with the programs on your computer you do need to download a program, but it’s of minimal effort to set up. Overall I think its a great concept and has been extremely well executed. To ground expectations though it did just come out and there are a couple of bugs for Windows users I hear, but they’re being tackled quickly.

One of the nicer touches that was included in the app for those that took part in funding the project was this very nice Thank You page in the app. Much to my surprise I actually found my name listed pretty quickly. A nice touch by Jeff Chow who made the app!

Cute, Kitschy, Cool: 12 Clever Chinese Desk Fan Designs

21 Jul

[ By Steve in Design & Gadgets & Geekery & Technology. ]

Chinese USB mini fan designs
Intended for low-cost mass production but displaying a wide variety of clever conceptual designs, these 12 Chinese desk fans may blow but they sure don’t suck.

Funny and Playful USB Airplane Clip Fan

That’s exactly what the box reads, “Funny and Playful USB Airplane Clip Fan”, though whether this fan is actually funny and/or playful depends on both the sensibilities of the purchaser and how they’re going to use the fan. Most regular folks will simply clip it on their monitor screens and flip the ON switch mounted on the bottom… it may not get you hot but funny, playful or not it will definitely keep you cool.

Chinese pink USB airplane clip-on desk fan(image via: PCK)

The Funny and Playful USB Airplane Clip Fan comes in any one of three pastel tints: mint green, pale pink or ivory white. Just plug the USB cable into the plane’s faux exhaust pipe – nice touch there – and you’re good to go on one more chilling mission!

eDON USB “Bi-Cycle” Fan

eDON Bi-Cycle dog paw USB desk fan(images via: Creative Coaching)

Wee paws for stationary cool-ification! The eDON USB “Bi-Cycle” fan is a delight for dog-lovers or simply those sweltering through the dog days of summer. Just press the leftmost toe pad to get the breeze flowing, and never mind the fact that the wind caressing your face emanates from a foot just a foot away. Available in golden brown, pastel pink, lime green or sky blue, the design of this USB-powered fan demands applause… though unfortunately the “with applause” copy at the seller’s website promises the same in vain.

NBC Microphone-Shaped USB Desktop Fan

Chinese USB NBC microphone desk fan(images via: Phone People)

That’s W ENNN B C!… less the W. The NBC Microphone-Shaped USB Desktop Fan is one of a series of four similar fans bearing the (owner applied) decal logos of NBC, China’s CCTV, Hello Kitty, and Doraemon. Are these popular logos officially licensed by the copyright holders? We’re guessing they aren’t but you won’t catch us, er, broadcasting our suspicions.

Legal niceties aside, the fan’s design is rather ingenious: users hold the fan’s body as if it were a microphone, then remove the protective fan blade cap and flip the switch to ON. Lest any late night talk show host wannabees feel the need to bend it like Fallon, be advised you’re just spittin’ in the wind.

Swirl World: 9 Cool McFlurry Flavors You Can’t Get Here

23 Jun

[ By Steve in Culture & Cuisine & Global. ]

McDonald's McFlurry international
McDonald’s McFlurry is the coolest thing on the menu but not all McMenus are created equal. Take these 9 cool McFlurry flavors… oops, our bad, you can’t!

Durian Crunch McFlurry – Singapore

McDonald's Durian Crunch McFlurry Singapore(image via: Facebook/McDonald’s Singapore Page)

McDonald’s is a proven master at thinking global while acting local and if you don’t believe that, feast your eyes (and nose) on the Durian Crunch McFlurry. This limited edition, Singapore-only dessert treat takes vanilla soft-serve ice cream blended with durian syrup, adds a crunchy topping, and is served in a squared off frosted plastic container.

You’ll pay $ 2.80 SG (about $ 2.24 US) for each helping dished out from any of the innumerable McDonald’s Dessert Kiosk outlets scattered all across the city. That is, of course, if you love durian… there’s no middle ground when it comes to the “(stin)king of fruits.” Try bringing your Durian Crunch McFlurry into certain hotels or onto Singapore Mass Rapid Transit trains? That just might cost you a caning.

Bubblegum Squash McFlurry – Australia & New Zealand

McDonald's Bubblegum Squash McFlurry Australia(images via: Brand Eating and Pretty Random)

Sweet-toothed fast-foodies fear not, the Bubblegum Squash McFlurry does NOT contain squash in any way, shape or form so Aussie & Kiwi parents can forget about sneaking some veggies into their children’s diets. In fact, the word “diet” should not be allowed anywhere near this pink, white & blue confection concoction made from bubblegum flavored syrup and marshmallows mixed into vanilla soft-serve ice cream.

Cadbury Creme Egg McFlurry – Canada, UK & Ireland

Cadbury Creme Egg McFlurry(images via: Coloribus and Facebook/McDonald’s Ireland)

You might think the McFlurry is as all-American as Mom’s apple pie but it actually originated in Canada: a McDonald’s franchise store in Bathurst, New-Brunswick first introduced the spoon-blended dessert in 1997. Canada continues to refine a distinct McFlurry identity with the Cadbury Creme Egg McFlurry. Coinciding with the appearance of its main flavoring feature, the Cadbury Creme Egg, the Cadbury Creme Egg McFlurry is usually available in most Canadian, British and Irish McDonald’s stores during the annual run-up to Easter.

Not all stores in all regions add the Cadbury Creme Egg McFlurry to their menus, which can be frustrating to devotees of the sickly sweet chocolate-shelled fondant orbs in all their various permutations. How does one know they’re such a devotee? Taking selfies with your long-sought sweet treat in foreign locales like London (England or Ontario) is a pretty good indication.

Visual-based spread (for photography, illustrations, and photos of student work)

Under Construction is an annual college publication featuring student art and literature over the year. It is designed by one of the graphic design classes, which I am a part of. This is a concept. The centered line indicates the spine.

Dialed In: 15 Cool & Quirky Radio Design Concepts

21 Apr

[ By Steve in Conceptual & Futuristic & Technology. ]

radio concept designs
The long history of radio and radios has progressed from polished wood, vacuum tube powered monstrosities through cheap Japanese transistor models to bass-pounding inner city “ghetto blasters” and finally sleek digital, satellite and internet receivers. These 15 cool & quirky radio design concepts provide a glimpse of this classic medium’s future while giving a respectful nod to its historic past.

MintPass Stackable Words Radio

Mintpass Word radio(images via: Yanko Design)

The “Used as Read” series of stacking audio components from MintPass takes almost all of the guesswork out of assembling one’s home audio system – simply chose, stack and connect the wires at the back. Even the remote control follows this design aesthetic: it’s shaped like the word “remote”.

Radio Ball Concept

Radio Ball concept(images via: Gadget Review and Gajitz)

One of the great joys offered by old-time radios was the thrill of exploration: slowly dialing up and down through the frequencies and (hopefully) stumbling upon some hidden jewel of a station playing YOUR kind of music, comedy or drama. The Radio Ball concept by Benoit Collette and Adam Kumpf of design group Teague was created to recapture the tactile, intimate & interactive thrill that seems to have been lost in the rush to digitization and automation. That’s just how it rolls.

Radio Valerie

Radio Valerie wireless radio concept(images via: The Art Of Science and WIRED/GadgetLab)

So long Radio Caroline, hello Radio Valerie! Radio Valerie from Pix Studio and chief designer Valentin Vodev is a cuter-than-cute wireless radio whose function is enabled by its form: changing the station involves moving the antenna up or down through the frequencies. What if the aerial needs adjusting to bring in a weak station but by doing so, you end up changing the station? Perhaps things aren’t as simple as they seem.

Plugg Radio

Plugg Radio concept(images via: Leibal Blog)

The Plugg Radio from Skrekkogle of Norway is more than the sum of its parts, being that said parts appear to be just a yellow cube and a cork. Secreted inside the box, however, is a fully functional AM/FM radio activated when the user removes the cork. So then: plug it in and pull the plug… makes perfect sense!
