  • Cool as Ice: 10 Years of Artist-Made Shanties on Frozen Lakes

[ By WebUrbanist in Art & Installation & Sound. ]

    SONY DSC

Over the past decade, over 1,000 artists and 60,000 visitors have taken part in this incredible seasonal arts event, coming together to create an annual temporary arts community-on-ice in one of the nation’s coldest states.

    art shanty village overview

    art shanty ice dice

Known as the “Land of 10,000 Lakes” but also as a center for the arts, Minnesota seems the perfect place for the Art Shanty Projects – a temporary autonomous zone where two disparate concepts to come together: the tradition of ice shacks built for fishing and the idea of public, interactive, community-built art on those same iced surfaces.

    art shanty aerial view

    art shanty collection image

Comparisons have been made to Burning Man, but those sell short the unique local nature of this undertaking. One thing they do share, however, is a harsh (if opposite) environmental context that makes serious demands on buildings and shapes their form and function. The resulting structures are a mixture of wooden stick-framed shacks, metal geodesic domes, triangular tipis and other proven engineering approaches mixed with creative touches and unusual applications.

    ART SHANTY INTERIORS

In years past, first on Medicine Lake and later White Bear Lake, the spaces these shape have featured a little bit of everything, from interactive games and dance floors to indoor and outdoor theatrical and musical performances. Sometimes a wild art car or two can be spotted patrolling the streets of the the shanty village as well and strange sculptures have been known to crop up in between buildings as well. While some things are scheduled, visitors learn to expect the unexpected.

This winter, the Art Shanty Projects is taking a break from the On-Ice Program to celebrate 10 years of success and complete a pivotal transition into an official non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. However, the organization is hosting a fundraising retrospective featuring some of the best shanties of years past as well as a custom-brewed beer specifically created for the event, taking place on February 28th at the Fulton Brewery in Minneapolis (more details can be found on ArtShantyProjects.org). Anyone wishing to donate to next year’s program can also do so online at Give.MN. This year, ASP is also a finalist for an Art Place America grant and is competing for a Black Rock Arts Foundation grant.

More about ASP: “Art Shanty Projects is an artist driven temporary community exploring the ways in which relatively unregulated public spaces can be used as new and challenging artistic environments to expand notions of what art can be. Our organization values artists, art in all communities, and the importance of interaction between the two. Through an array of artists receiving fair wages for their work, we broaden perceptions of art while maintaining respect for the environment and communities in which we work.” Note: the writer of this article serves as on the Board of Directors for the Art Shanty Projects, an unpaid position.

  • More Map Art: 27 Cool Cartographic Sculptures & Drawings

[ By Steph in Art & Drawing & Digital. ]

    map art fairburn 2

Rivers become veins in detailed portraits, mirrored city blocks resemble modernized Persian rugs and urban topographies emerge from rolls of tape in these map-based works of art. Some create the images of cities, countries and continents from unexpected materials, like Manhattan rendered in a 2.5-ton block of marble, while others use complex aerial imagery and cartography as an unexpected medium for drawings and sculpture.

Google Maps as Persian Rugs by David Thomas Smith

    map art persian rugs 1

    map art persian rugs 2

    map art persian rugs 3

Images composited from Google Maps screencaps are reconstructed piece-by-piece into mirrored images inspired by Persian rugs in ‘Anthropocene,’ a series by David Thomas Smith. The Dublin-based artist chooses locations that are centers of global capitalism, including Dubai, the Beijing International Airport, and industrial sites like the Delta Coal Port in Vancouver, British Columbia. “This collision between the old and the new, fact and fiction, surveillance and invisibility, is part of a strategy to reflect on the global order of things,” says the artist.

Manhattan in 2.5 Tons of Marble

    map art marble manhattan 1

    map art marble manhattan 2

Japanese sculptor Yutaka Sone did, in fact, use Google Maps and aerial photographs to render an accurate replication of Manhattan in this whopping 2.5-ton block of white marble. But most of his inspiration actually came from a series of helicopter rides in which he got a feel for the city, ultimately carving it as if it were an elevated plateau. The details of the sculpture are so accurate, residents of the city can locate their own buildings by counting the blocks.

Topographical Tape Maps by Takahiro Iwasaki

    map art tape 1

    map art tape 2

Best-known for his intricate thread sculptures, Japanese artist Takahiro Iwasaki has also created topographical maps carefully sliced into fat rolls of gray and blue electrical tape. The landscape replicated on the gray roll is Victoria Peak, a mountain located on the western half of Hong Kong Island.

    Map Portraits by Ed Fairburn

    map art fairburn 1

    map art fairburn 3

Ed Fairburn uses paper maps as canvases for incredibly detailed portraits, rendering human features as topographical landscapes on top of street maps, star charts, railroad blueprints and other types of maps. The portraits seem to blend seamlessly with the landscape features, with rivers and roads running through them like veins.

  • Photography Challenge – Chill Out with Cool Tones

Today I rounded up 37 great examples of images in cool tones. The tone or color of your image can create or shift the mood and meaning if your image and is a very powerful compositional tool when used well.

This week your goal is to practice creating cool tones in your photography.

    Photography challenge – cool tones

Here are a few examples of images with cool tones.

You can create a color tint in your image a few different ways:

    • By shooting at blue hour
    • Adjusting your white balance
    • Changing the color in post-processing
    • Using a colored filter on your lens

It’s your turn to get shooting, show me your blue or cool images.

Share your cool tone images here:

Simply upload your shot into the comment field (look for the little camera icon in the Disqus comments section) and they’ll get embedded for us all to see or if you’d prefer upload them to your favourite photo sharing site and leave the link to them. Show me your best images in this week’s challenge.

  • Posts With The Most: 12 Cool & Creative Traffic Bollards

[ By Steve in Art & Street Art & Graffiti. ]

    Traffic Bollards Leicester 1
Never mind the bollards? Uh-uh: these traffic stoppers halt wayward vehicles like no traffic cone can. The best bollards, though, are designed to look great!

    Traffic Bollards Leicester 2

    Traffic Bollards Leicester 3

Leicester City Council faced a conundrum in early 2014: children walking to and from Whitehall Primary school were endangered by vehicular road traffic. The street had no sidewalks; only a row of metal traffic bollards. The council’s ingenious solution was to modify the bollards to look like children, many wearing the school’s red uniforms. Kudos to Flickr user KiranParmar for capturing these kinda creepy “Stepford Children” in their native habitat.

    Traffic Bollards Leicester 4

    Traffic Bollards Leicester 5

    Traffic Bollards Leicester 6

Not only do the modified bollards remind drivers to be aware of pedestrians, the scheme is much cheaper than laying down sidewalks. One would hope older ex-students don’t try to re-enact the infamous mailbox scene from the 1993 film Dazed and Confused… a metal bollard beats a wooden baseball bat every time.

    Lean Design

    Leaning Tower Pisa Traffic Bollard

“When life gives you lemons, make lemonade,” and when traffic tilts your traffic bollard, make it look like the Leaning Tower of Pisa of course! Kate McGovern snapped this tilted but still functional bollard somewhere in Philadelphia. Compromised or not, the bollard seems in better shape than the surrounding pavement while providing some unexpected visual interest.

    Minions Of Bollards

    Traffic Bollards Penang Malaysia 1

    Traffic Bollards Penang Malaysia 2

    Traffic Bollards Penang Malaysia 3

Who knew the 2010 movie Despicable Me was so popular… in Penang, Malaysia! Located on Soo Hong Lane off Armenian Street in Penang’s inner George Town neighborhood, the charming street art installation was painted by Lithuanian-born artist Ernest Zacharevic early in 2013 as part of a city-sanctioned campaign to beautify Soo Hong Lane. Unfortunately, Zacharevic had to be recalled to repaint at least one of the not-so-despicable bollards which was defaced – literally – by vandals.

    LEGO My Bollard!

LEGO Man Traffic Bollards Le CyKlop Paris 2

LEGO Man Traffic Bollards Le CyKlop Paris 3

LEGO Man Traffic Bollards Le CyKlop Paris 4

One popular bollard design features a narrowed area near the top to facilitate the attachment of ropes, chains and the like. Coincidentally, these particular bollards bear a cursory resemblance to LEGO men… and a little artistry (plus some yellow paint) enhances the effect even more. The oddly one-eyed LEGO men bollards above come to us courtesy of French street artist Le CyKlop (which explains much) and can be found along the Canal de l’Ourcq in Paris

  • 20 Cool Things You Can Do With Nik Software’s New Analog Efex Pro 2

I’ve been playing around with Nik Software’s new Analog Efex Pro 2 photo processing software (brought to you by the good folks at Google) all weekend long and I’m super impressed. The purist film photographers out there are probably going to hate this new software, but for you digital photographers who dig an analog look and feel, you are going to love this.

I shot film exclusively for about 15 years before switching to digital in the early 2000s. While there is an absolute undeniable romance with rolling your own film, hanging out in a darkroom with your college girlfriend, and licking the fixer off your own prints you made yourself, it’s not something I think I’ll ever go back to — unless and maybe when my hipster buddy Daniel Krieger finally convinces me to buy a film Hasselblad.

I used to joke around with anyone who asked me what camera I shot and tell them a Holga. Now it’s like I really am shooting a Holga, just with my Canon 5D Mark III. ;)

Anyways, check out 20 different looks you can create with Analog Efex Pro 2. I’m a fan. You can buy it here if you want.

Motion Blur. It’s like owning a lensbaby without having to actually use one of those horrible awkward things. Just kidding, lensbabys are great!

How did I ever get a double exposure of this classic neon sign? I’ll never tell.

Hey It’s Amanda Morgan shot with my cool Toy Camera #9.

Wet plate photography, without all the sticky wet plates.

Jenna Jamieson shot with Toy Camera #1.

Every respectable concert photographer brings their Toy Camera #2 to the photo pit these days. Chvrches rock!

    Instant triptychs.

Classic Camera #7 has such a nice warm film feel, doesn’t it?

Hey tilt shift and I didn’t even have to buy the $ 2,500 Canon TS-E 17mm f/4L Tilt-Shift Lens! Which is a totally awesome lens by the way that I actually will buy someday. Canon L lenses are the best. I cannot say enough positive things about all my Canon glass. I’m not being sarcastic there, I’m being serious.

One of my neon signs that I took back in 1972 while on a photography junket across America with Stephen Shore.

Motion blur with Jeremiah Owyang. It’s just like Star Wars only better because it’s got Jeremiah in it.

Colorcast #2 makes butterflies look so pretty.

Colorcast #2 makes models look so pretty too, but this one was already pretty to begin with. :)

I think this painting from the Met in New York City looks better this way, don’t you? I could totally print this up and hang this in my house. So can you too, because I licensed it Creative Commons non-commercial. Friends share right? ;)

Oopsie, a little light leak thing happened in my Holga again.

Doing wet plate photography in Holbrook, Arizona.

Love the authentic real life colors from Classic Camera #2 on this San Francisco victorian in the Mission District. A couple million in stock options and this too can be yours.

Smoothdude let me borrow his Hasselblad to make this photo on our Route 66 trip last year.

I took a photo of my Kodak Instamatic with my Kodak Instamatic. Get it?

More Seattle fun with Toy Camera #2.

  • IKEA 2014 Small-Space Set: 51 Designs from Cool to Kitsch

[ By WebUrbanist in Design & Furniture & Decor. ]

    ikea ps collection on move

The sales pitch for this new 2014 series is compelling: 51 inexpensive designer objects made for young city dwellers, people who may be on the move more often or whose domiciles simply lack square footage.

    ikea small space living

The research driving IKEA’s 2014 PS collection, On the Move, is spot on: more people are living in cities than ever before, and young persons are particularly like to have smaller residences. The design results, though, are a bit of a mixed bag, with some truly useful modular and multi-functional pieces alongside less-obvious options.

    ikea designer wall shelf

And indeed the collection features a some handy items, like a small-footprint, unattached wall shelf (that fits corners as well) by Japanese designer Keiji Ashizawa, easy to set up and shift as needed.

    ikea standing dresser roller

Similarly practical: a tall and lightweight mesh wardrobe by French designer Matali Crasset that can be tilted and rolled around within or between apartments.

    ikea balancing bench design

Other choices are a bit more debatable – it is hard to see how often a balancing bench (by Swedish designer Henrik Preutz) will come in handy, particularly in narrow halls for which it is intended (its angled feet could trip you up in a skinny space).

    ikea integrated lamp side table

Though it has a smaller footprint at least, it is also hard to say why a combined magazine rack, side table and standing lamp (by Polish designer Tomek Rygalik) is better when integrated rather than separated, especially when it comes to transporting it between places.

    ikea portable carry greenhouse

And then there is this awkwardly cute greenhouse plant holder (by Swiss designer Nicolas Cortolezzis) that seems just slightly redundant, unless you like to take your flora for walks in the park.

    slightly kitsch modular ikea

From a purely aesthetic standpoint, some of the pieces are a weird mix of retro, modern, farm and industrial, but one could argue that is all part of a refreshing trend toward a new time-spanning eclecticism.

    ikea portable box shelf

Regardless, enough of these designs are on the right tack that they are worth a closer look, including bookshelves that are just a bit easier to transport thanks to wire-frame edges and folding, rolling and flip-down tables that have at least a little more character than their regular retail cousins. Everyone knows a million dollars does not go quite so far in Manhattan, but some might still wonder if the place is worth the asking price. Cool factor and high-tech tweaks aside, though, it is worth noting that other units in the building have Zillow estimates of 1.5 million dollars in some cases, so at the very least this high-sounding price may not be wildly off base.
