NYC Comes Alive Around Massive Mural in Time Lapse Video

09 May

A 150-foot-tall figure of a man walking materializes on a Manhattan sidewalk, slowly coming into focus as the city awakens around it, in a new time-lapse video. French photographer and street artist JR directs a team of workers who can be seen scrambling around the piece like worker bees as the hours pass, the sun arcs over the site and thousands of people mill by.

The New York Times commissioned JR to create the piece for an accompanying story on walking in the city, and produced the video. A camera perched atop the adjacent Flatiron building captures the action as the team wets the pavement before dawn, preparing to adhere the giant paste-up.

It’s cool to see the process behind installing a wheat paste project this big, and the time lapse shows just how much work goes into it despite the fact that it’s not being hand-painted onsite.

JR is known for journalistic murals made of his own photography, putting giant faces all over urban structures like walls, roofs, streets and train cars. The photo-realism is especially effective when it’s paired with aging, deteriorating surfaces.

With Spring Showers Comes Lightning Photos

14 Apr

Storm season is upon us which means it’s the perfect time to try for some shocking shots.

Lightning photos are hard to perfect but super fun to attempt. Here’s a few tips for getting started.

First and most importantly: Stay safe. Distance is your best friend – use a telephoto lens when possible. Keep your gear dry by setting up under a covered patio or deck.

Second: Long exposures mean you need a tripod, or duct tape and a rock, whatever it takes to get that stability!

Third of all: Every storm is different, so your settings will vary slightly each time. Try these to start with and play around from there –

  • ISO 100
  • f/7 aperture
  • 30 second exposure

For a more in depth tutorial, check out Richard Gottardo’s excellent write-up here covering everything from storm searching to stacking images in post.

And you thought puddle jumping was the best part of a storm…

3D-Printed Spider Dress Attacks When Anyone Comes Too Close

25 Dec

[ By Steph in Drawing & Digital. ]

spider dress 1

No worries about anyone invading your personal space when you’re wearing this intricate 3D-printed dress, which extends animatronic spider-inspired arms when it senses another person’s presence nearby. ‘Spider Dress 2.0′ by Dutch designer Anouk Wipprecht responds with defensive gestures if anyone approaches too quickly, or come-hither motions to friendlier, slower-moving people.

Equipped with proximity and respiration monitors and an Intel Edison processor, the dress acts as a shield between the wearer and the outside world, interpreting the intentions of people who come near. The 3D-printed white components have a skeletal appearance, while LED lights add a bit more sci-fi appeal.

As seen in the video, the movements of the spider arms are creepily realistic. The design is an improvement upon Wipprecht’s ‘Spider Dress 1.0,’ which had a more mechanical appearance with arrow-like legs. The artist sees fashion as lacking in ‘microcontrollers,’ and seeks to combine fashion design with engineering, science and interaction.

The mechanisms that create the movement in Wipprecht’s wearable tech designs are left visible on the outside so viewers can “witness the designs creating their own unique forms of interaction, movement and meaning.”

POIEO3D family-friendly 3D printer
Following in the footsteps of the microwave oven, at-home 3D printing in the form of the Poieo3D Printer is ready for prime time, play time and study time!

POIEO3D family-friendly 3D printer

Designed BY families FOR families, the Poieo3D Printer aims to make an exciting new technology as commonplace and worry-free as microwave ovens and other home appliances we now take for granted. While not quite “Tea, Earl Grey, Hot”, the Poeio3D Printer just might be the closest thing on Earth to home-based Star Trek tech.

POIEO3D family-friendly 3D printer

Poieo3D is the brainchild of several families in the greater Toronto area who felt inspired by the wealth of opportunities offered by the amazing new world of 3D printing. The founders fervently believe an affordable, easy to use, and child-safe 3D printer should be available to ALL families and should be a vital component of every home, workplace and classroom.

POIEO3D family-friendly 3D printer

The Poieo3D Printer isn’t just user-safe, it’s environmentally-friendly too – something you’d expect of a product that’s to be a permanent part of one’s lifestyle. The 3D printing process employs biodegradable print material derived from renewable resources such as corn starch and sugarcane. Unlike petroleum-based plastics, this material doesn’t give off foul-smelling, toxic fumes when the printer is used making it ideal for non-industrial use. Available in a rainbow of colors at a surprisingly low price, the material comes in the form of thin flexible filaments wound on spools for ease of storage.

Fuji X-T1 Versus X-E2 – Which Comes Out on Top?

If you’re considering getting a more compact camera and downsizing from a DSLR, or maybe upgrading from a point and shoot camera – you might end up looking at one of these Fuji cameras.

I know for me, as a previous film shooter, the X-T1 has a lot of appeal and it currently sitting on my list to get. So I was interested to see this comparison and it actually solidified my choice.

Not convinced? Here’s a review of the X-T1 by dPS writer Paul Burwell.

04 Jun

vertu1.jpg

If you’ve always wanted a Hasselblad camera, but found the real thing too bulky and the rebadged Sony cameras too ridiculous, smartphone manufacturer Vertu has just given you another option. Vertu’s latest model, the Signature Touch, comes with a “Hasselblad-certified” camera. Despite a vague statement that Vertu has worked with Hasselblad to “perfect the image tuning of the camera onboard Signature Touch,” it’s almost certainly using a standard 1/3-inch CMOS sensor.
