Samsung Galaxy S8 comes with two different camera sensors

01 Apr

It appears that as with previous Samsung flagship smartphones, the brand new Galaxy S8 and S8+ will, depending on region, come with different camera sensors. Since the launch users have spotted versions with Sony IMX333 and S5K2L2 ISOCELL image sensors. The latter is made by System LSI, which is a subsidiary of Samsung.

The situation is the same for the front camera. One version features a Sony IMX320 imager, the other comes with an ISOCELL S5K3H1 sensor. That said, there is no difference between the two versions in terms of camera specifications. In both main cameras the sensor is a 1/2.55″ 12.2MP variant with Dual-Pixel AF. With an F1.7 aperture and optical image stabilization the lens specification is identical as well. Sensor size in the front camera is not known at this point but all models come with an F1.7 aperture and face-detection AF.

Considering camera specifications are identical on all models and presumably so will be image processing, we should not expect any noticeable differences between the two versions, but if we get the chance, we’ll try and find out if there is any variation in image quality.

LG G6 comes with dual-cam and 18:9 FullVision display

27 Feb

LG has today announced its latest flagship smartphone, the LG G6 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. For the new model LG has abandoned the G5’s modular concept and focused on usability and durability instead. The G6 comes with an elegant looking metal frame with chamfered edges and a brushed metal back plate. The body is now also water and dust proof. On the front you’ll find a 5.7″ QHD+ display with an 18:9 aspect ratio that LG calls FullVision.

The unusual format allows for a device design that offers a large display but can still easily be held in one hand. It also makes the phone ideal for split-screen applications and movie-watching in cinematic formats. In the new camera UI it allows you to see a previously captured image in square format while already framing the next one. LG says that many apps are currently being optimized for the new format and streaming video providers are offering more and more content in 18:9 aspect ratio. The G6 is also the first mobile device to support Dolby Labs’ Dolby Vision high dynamic range video technology.  The display is framed by very thin bezels and LG says it is easier to view in bright sunlight than previous versions.

Due to the waterproofing the battery is now non-removable but comes with an increased 3300 mAh capacity. Unlike some of its competitors the G6 still offers a 3.5mm headphone jack as well. Android 7.0 is powered by last year’s top-end chipset Snapdragon 821 and 4GB of RAM. 32 or 64GB of internal storage are expandable via a microSD slot.

In the camera department LG sticks with the G5’s dual-camera concept but both sensors now offer the same 13MP resolution. The wideangle lens comes with a 71 degree angle of view and F1.8 aperture while the super-wideangle offers 125 degrees and a slower F2.4 aperture. Only the wideangle is OIS-equipped. In the camera app you can switch lenses at the press of a button and LG says it has improved the transition when zooming between the two. 4K video capture with stereo sound recording and a laser-assisted AF system are on board as well. The front camera comes with a 5MP resolution.

With improved camera specs, the interesting new display format and the attractive and waterproof body, the LG G6 looks like an appealing option for mobile photographers in 2017. We are hoping to get our hands on a review unit soon. No information on pricing and availability has been released yet.

Key specifications:

  • Dual-camera with two 1/3″ 13MP sensors
  • Wideangle, 71 degree angle of view, 3-axis OIS
  • Super-wideangle, 125 degree angle of view, F2.4
  • laser-assisted autofocus
  • 4K video with stereo sound recording
  • 5MP front camera with 100 degree angle of view, F2.2

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 chipset
  • 4GB RAM, 32/64GB storage
  • microSD support up to 256GB
  • 5.7″ 18:9 QHD+ IPS display, 2880 x 1440 resolution, 564 ppi

Gionee M2017 comes with 2x optical zoom and 7,000 mAh battery

28 Dec

Gionee is a relatively new name in the smartphone world but the Chinese brand has already established itself in Asian markets and is growing quickly in the Western hemisphere as well. With a price tag of approximately $ 1,000, its latest model, the M2017, places itself firmly at the luxury end of the mobile device spectrum; but looking at the specifications, that seems justified.

The M2017’s headline feature is its battery. The engineers have combined two 3500mAh units to create a massive 7000mAh battery that rivals those on some tablets. Gionee claims the device offers  32 hours of talk time or 26 hours video playback on a full charge. Quick Charge 3.0 is supported as well.

The camera specs sound very interesting, too, although Gionee has not provided too much detail. For now we know that the device features a dual-cam with a 12 and a 13MP sensor. This combination allows for 2x optical zoom, like on the iPhone 7 Plus, or a 8x digital zoom. The front-facing camera comes with an 8MP resolution.

The rest of the specification reflect the luxury price point as well. Images can be viewed and composed on a 5.7-inch dual curved QHD AMOLED display. In terms of memory, there are 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Unfortunately though there is no microSD-card slot, and for some strange reason, Gionee decided to use the mid-range Snapdragon 653 chipset to power the M2017.

The device is made from premium materials, weighs in at 238 grams and, despite the massive battery, is 10.78mm thin. There is no information yet on international availability, but we’d certainly like to have closer look at that dual-camera.

The iBlazr Case comes with 40 LEDs and a built-in battery pack

24 Nov

Ukrainian company Concepter, which brought us the iBlazr smart flash in 2013, has launched a new Kickstarter campaign to fund production and distribution of its latest product, the iBlazr Case. The iBlazr Case combines 40 dual-tone LEDs for better flash photography with a 2,500 mAh battery pack and is compatible with the iPhone 6, 6S, 6 Plus, 6S Plus, 7, and 7 Plus models.

The ’40 high-power LEDs’ on the rear of the case are triggered by the phone’s built-in flash via a light sensor, which means the case works with virtually any iPhone camera app. According to its makers it provides 5 times the light output of the built-in LED flash or approximately 300 lux at 1 meter subject distance. The beam angle is 180 degrees and the built-in battery, which can also be used to charge the iPhone, is good for 1500 flash exposures. When the case is used as a flash light it provides more than 2.5 hours of constant illumination.

The LEDs can also be used to display customizable notifications for incoming calls, texts or other events, when the case is paired to the iPhone via a Bluetooth connection. The Shotlight companion app allows for adjustment of the flash color and brightness and is a fully-fledged camera app in its own right.

The iBlazr Case is made of ABS plastic and coated with a rubber material. The built-in battery is charged via USB Type-C port. You can now reserve a unit by pledging $ 55 or more on the project’s Kickstarter page. Shipping in envisaged for April 2017.

Wacom has updated its Cintiq line of pen displays that allow you to work with a stylus directly on a screen that is connected to a Mac or PC. The 13″ Cintiq Pro 13 and the 16″ Cintiq Pro 16 differ mainly in terms of display size, resolution and color gamut. The larger model comes with a 3840 x 2160 UHD resolution and can display 94% of the Adobe RGB color space. The smaller variant offers a 1920 x 1080 Full-HD panel that covers 87% of Adobe RGB.

The ExpressKeys and TouchRing controls of previous models, that offered easy access to frequently used tools on the right side of the display, have been removed and replaced by an optional Express Key remote. The tablets also come with pop-out legs that allow you to angle them up.

Both models support multi-touch gestures and come with Wacom’s new Pro Pen 2, which, according to Wacom, is four times more accurate and pressure sensitive than the previous version. The Cintiq Pro 13 will be available from next month for $ 1,000. Huawei Mate 9 comes with next generation Leica dual-cam

04 Nov

Huawei has today launched its latest top-end phablet, the Mate 9. The new device features a large 5.9″ LCD IPS display with 1080p resolution and 1500:1 contrast ratio. In the camera department the Mate 9 comes with a new dual-camera that, like its counterpart in the P9, was co-developed with camera manufacturer Leica.

The new version of the Huawei dual-cam boosts resolution of its monochrome sensor to 20MP (up from 12MP in the P9) with a 12MP color chip. Both lenses feature an F2.2 aperture. There is a new 6-axis optical image stabilization system and a 4-in-1 hybrid AF system that combines, contrast detection, phase detection, laser time-of-flight measurements and depth information.

As before, image data from both sensors is combined to achieve better image results than conventional cameras. Like on the P9, the dual-camera can also simulate the bokeh of a fast lens on a DSLR, but Huawei says the effect has been improved and is now visible in the live-view image.

In addition the camera features a new hybrid zoom system, which uses image information from the 20MP monochrome sensor for ‘lossless’ digital zooming of the 12MP standard image output. Huawei says that, thanks to improved compression methods, the camera’s 4K video mode creates smaller file sizes without a loss in image quality. The front camera features an 8MP sensor and F1.9 aperture.

Android 7.0 and Huawei’s EMUI 5.0 launcher are powered by the in-house Kirin 960 CPU, which, according to Huawei, delivers 180% more performance than the predecessor Kirin 950. Huawei also claims the 4000mAh battery is good for 2.5 days of normal use per charge, or 1.7 days of intensive use. An improved version of Huawei’c quick charging system is on board as well. The Huawei Mate 9 with 4GB RAM, 64GB storage and microSD support will be available in mocha, black, white, gold, space grey and silver and cost €699 in Europe (approximately $ 775).

Huawei also introduced a limited Porsche Design edition of the Mate 9. This luxury device comes with 6GB of RAM, 256GB of internal memory and features a 5.5″ curved 2K AMOLED display. Other specifications are identical to the standard Mate 9. The Porsche Edition will be sold exclusively through Porsche Design Stores and set you back a hefty €1395 ($ 1545).

RAW by 500px comes with licensing and assignment notifications

16 Sep

iOS 10 finally brings Raw capture and editing to the iPhone, and a range of camera and editing apps have already integrated the new feature. The RAW by 500px app does the same but takes things a step further by adding image licensing and on-demand photography assignments to the feature set.

After editing your images, they can be submitted to 500px for licensing. Photographers can earn up to 60% commission if an image is licensed to publishers, advertisers or marketers. In the near future users of the app will also be notified of on-demand photography assignments in their geographical area.

“With RAW, we set out to create a great capture and edit experience that photographers could have fun and be familiar with. Something that feels like it should be part of our everyday photography workflow on mobile,” Adam Shutsa, VP of Design at 500px shares. “After speaking to many community members, we made sure this app would fit your processing workflow and needs.”

In addition to the usual exposure and tonal parameters, Raw editing tools include hue, saturation and luminance by color. The app allows you to save your favorite settings as a custom filter and, if that sounds too much work, you can alternatively use one of the community filters that have been created by photographers around the world. RAW by 500px is now available on the App Store.

LG V20 comes with dual-cam and stereo sound recording

08 Sep

LG has unveiled the V20, a smartphone with a focus on audiovisual performance that is also the first device to come with Google’s Android 7.0 operating system. The latter brings with it the new multi-window mode, a new notification system, improvements to battery management and the in-app search application, which allows for content search from third-party apps. Thanks to LG’s UX 5.0+ launcher the interface looks very similar to the LG G5’s.

Also pretty much identical to the G5 is the V20’s camera specification. Like its smaller cousin the new model uses a dual-camera setup. A 16MP sensor is combined with a fast F1.8 aperture and optical image stabilization in the main camera, which is joined by an 8MP/F2.4 unstabilized wide-angle module. There is also on-sensor phase detection and laser assistance for AF. In video mode the new device can record up to 4K resolution and comes with Qualcomm’s new Steady Record 2.0 electronic image stabilization which optimizes synchronization between the image and the device’s gyro. At the front there is a 5MP camera with F1.9 aperture.

In addition, thanks to a built-in 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC, the V20 can record high-quality stereo sound with its videos and eliminate background noise. Recorded images and video can be viewed on a 5.7″ Quad HD display that, like on the predecessor V10, features a secondary small display for quick access to apps, notifications and quick settings.

The Android OS is powered by a Snapdragon 820 chipset and 4GB of RAM. 64GB of expandable storage are on board and the 3200 mAh battery is removable. It also supports Quick Charge 3.0 via a USB Type-C connector. All the components are wrapped up in a smooth-surfaced metal body. The LG V20 will first be released in Korea later this month but availability in other regions, including the US, should be announced soon.

Light Art Comes to Life: Dancing Animated Gifs by Lucea Spinelli

Beams of light dance, jump, squiggle, scatter and interact with each other as if they’ve taken on a life of their own in a series of animated light art gifs by New York City-based photographer Lucea Spinelli. Abandoned school buses, public park benches, playgrounds, glass jars and human bodies become the settings for surreal, almost ghostly scenes calling to mind the common superstition of supernatural beings affecting electricity.

dancing light art 7

In fact, all that seems to be missing from some of these animations is a proton pack from Ghostbusters, as the clusters of light created by Spinelli take on the movements of autonomous beings. Spinelli takes still shots of moving light using long exposure methods and then strings them together to create these animated sequences.

“In her project phötosgraphé, Lucea Spinelli creates long exposure photographs that afford us a view into the unknown,” reads the statement on the artist’s website. “For the duration of the open shutter the lens becomes a canvas upon which Lucea paints with light. The illuminated forms she creates interact with spaces and objects in a wa that evoke the unseen – such as spirit, dreams and metaphor – within the everyday.”

“Often staying in the dark for long hours and relying on muscle memory alone, the process reflects ritual as a necessary part of interacting and evoking the unseen aspects of our reality. Thus by using a medium is commonly used to mimic reality, to suspend it, Lucea invites us to push beyond the bounds of visual perception to explore other ways of knowing. Finally, by stringing sequences of these long exposure photographs together into an animated gif, the light forms are literally brought to life as they dance across the forever looping frame.”
