Here it comes: Japanese network begins airing 8K broadcasts

04 Aug

Japan’s NHK has started broadcasting the world’s first 8K television content on a new ‘Super Hi-Vision’ satellite channel. NHK will air a mix of 4K and 7680 x 4320 8K content from 10AM to 5PM, with programming that includes concerts and highlights from the 2012 Olympics. There’s just one problem – nobody actually owns an 8K TV, so NHK has set up six viewing stations in Japan as well as in Rio de Janeiro, and plans to air live footage from Opening and Closing Ceremonies at the Olympic Games kicking off this Friday.

NHK has had its eye on 8K broadcasts for years, hosting public viewing events as early as 2014. The company has used NAB in Las Vegas as a showcase for its latest innovations since 2006, highlighting its advances in high-resolution broadcasting in April of this year by using a 133MP ‘portable 8K camera’.

Huawei’s Honor Note 8 comes with 6.6″ Quad-HD screen

02 Aug

If you’re keen on consuming video and images on your smartphone, Huawei’s latest model in its Honor sub-brand, the Honor Note 8, might be just the device for you. Its 6.6″ Super AMOLED display is one of the largest in the phablet segment and decidedly blurs the line between smartphone and tablet. With its Quad-HD resolution it offers a pixel density of 443 ppi.

Unlike the standard Honor 8 model, the Note variant does not come with a dual-camera setup. Instead, the Honor combines a 13MP image sensor with a fast F2.0 aperture, optical image stabilization and a dual-LED flash. Video is recorded at 1080p Full HD resolution and an 8MP front camera is available for selfie-shooting and video calls.

The Android 6 operating system is powered by Huawei’s in-house Kirin 955 chipset with octa-core CPU and 4GB of RAM. You can pick from 32, 64 or 128GB of storage options and expand capacity via a microSD card. The Note 8’s 4,500mAh battery should provide enough power to keep the large screen and other components running all day. The Honor Note 8 can be pre-ordered in China today for approximately $ 345 for the 32GB base model, $ 375 for the 64GB version and $ 420 for the 128GB top-end variant. There is no word on global availability yet but we would expect the Note 8 to become available in other regions soon.

Voyager 4 Drone comes with 16x optical zoom and 4G connectivity

25 Jul

Most camera drones come equipped with wide-angle lenses. For most use cases this makes sense from an image framing point of view but it also helps keep camera shake at bay. That said, thanks to improved gimbal and stabilization technologies we are now seeing the first consumer drone cameras with optical zoom appear on the market. The recently released Zenmuse Z3, DJI’s first zoom camera, offers a 7x zoom. The new Walkera Voyager 4 drone is now more than doubling the DJI’s zoom range by offering a 16x optical zoom lens that tops out at 1500mm.

The camera records 1080p Full HD video, can rotate 360 degrees and is stabilized by a gimbal. Drone and camera can be controlled from up to a mile away via a mobile app using the drone’s built-in Wi-Fi network. In addition the Voyager 4 offers a new 4G connectivity feature which means it can, as long as a mobile network is available, be controlled across much larger distances.

Both new features, the 16x zoom and 4G connectivity, won’t help to alleviate the privacy concerns related to drone use, but we will have to wait and see how the new technologies will be used. The Voyager 4 also comes as a 4K version with wide-angle lens. At this time pricing information has not been released. A product video is available on the Walkera website.

Huawei’s Honor 8 comes with dual cam, no Leica branding

13 Jul

Huawei has today announced the latest high-end model of its sub-brand Honor. The Honor 8 is in many ways a smaller version of the phablet-device Honor V8 and also has a lot in common with Huawei’s current flagship P9. Like the P9, it comes with a 5.2-inch 1080p IPS display and a dual-camera setup. The main imaging module combines the images of two 12MP sensors with F2.2 aperture but has to make to without the P9’s Leica Summarit branding.

In terms of memory the device offers up to 4GB of RAM and 64GB of expandable storage. Android 6 and Huawei’s EMUI 4.1 are powered by the Chinese manufacturer’s in-house chipset Kirin 950 and like on the P9 there is a fingerprint sensor on the back for increased security. The 3,000 mAh battery is charged via a USB Type-C port.

The Honor will become available in China on July 19th. The base model with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage will cost approximately $ 298, the top-end version with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage will set you back approximately $ 335. No information on international availability has been revealed yet but it can be assumed the Honor 8 will be available to purchase in other regions soon.

Street Smart: Theft-Proof Bike Comes With Recovery Service Guarantee

01 Jun

theft proof smart bike 8

Even the strongest bike locks aren’t totally foolproof, but when locks fail or risky storage options don’t pay off, the makers of this smart bike will send a recovery team after your ride. The ‘SmartBike’ by Amsterdam-based bike specialists VanMoof comes with a lot of cool features, but this anti-theft guarantee is definitely the most valuable of them all, and they’ll even buy you a new one if they can’t find it once it’s stolen.

Available in 3 speed in grey or 8 speed in black, the VanMoof SmartBike features GSM anti-theft tracking with ‘Peace of Mind Service’ free of charge for the first two years of ownership. If a thief manages to make it past all the built-in anti-theft parts, like tamper-proof nuts and screws, the GSM cellular info will activate, allowing the recovery team to find it even if it’s inside a building. They promise to get it back within two weeks, with the last mile of tracking powered by a “top-secret” locating technology.

But theft isn’t the only special feature on this bike. Designed to be the ultimate city ride, this one comes with a smartphone app, and can be unlocked with a tap of your finger on your phone or the bike’s dashboard. The software will automatically check via your smartphone’s Bluetooth that it’s really you before it unlocks your bike, so freeing it takes seconds. The app also offers personalized direction and weather for your commute and ride stats, and the bike has head and tail lights that automatically turn on and off. All electric components are pedal-powered, so there’s no charging required.

Sony Xperia XA Ultra comes with 16MP OIS front cam

19 May

Sony first announced its new Xperia X line of smartphones at MWC earlier this year. Now the Japanese manufacturer has added another model to the line in the shape of the Xperia XA Ultra. As the ‘Ultra’ moniker suggests the new device is larger than the standard XA model. The XA Ultra display measures 6 inches instead of 5 but retains the 1080p resolution and overall design.

That said, the XA Ultra’s headline feature is its front camera. It comes with a 16MP Exmor R sensor, optical image stabilization and a front flash, making it a significant upgrade to the original XA’s front camera, which at 8MP is no slouch either. The wide 88 degree viewing angle should allow for group self-portraits without selfie-sticks or similar contraptions.  The main camera has been upgraded as well and features a 21.5MP Exmor RS sensor with Hybrid-AF, which sounds similar to the camera specification of the Xperia Z3+.

The rest of the specification arguably puts the XA Ultra into the mid-range bracket of the market. The Android 6.0 operating system is powered by a MediaTek MT6755 chipset and 3GB of RAM. 16GB of storage can be expanded via a microSD slot and Sony says the 2700 mAh battery is good for two days of use. Given the large screen, we’d take that statement with a pinch of salt though. The Sony Xperia XA Ultra will be available from July but no detail on pricing and regional availability has been released yet.

Lenovo’s Moto G Plus comes with 1/2.4-inch sensor and fingerprint reader

18 May

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_3124387172″,”galleryId”:”3124387172″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”standalone”:false,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”startInCommentsView”:false,”isMobile”:false}) });

Motorola’s Moto G series has always been one of the best options for smartphone users looking for top performance at mid-range pricing. Now, the first new G model has been launched since Motorola became a Lenovo company. True to form, the Moto G Plus offers several features we are used to seeing on high-end devices and a promising-looking camera specification.

An Omnivsion OV16860 1/2.4-inch 16MP sensor with a large pixel size of 1.34um is paired with a fast F2.0 aperture, on-sensor phase detection and laser-assisted AF. There is also a dual-LED flash and a 5MP front camera with F2.2 aperture. On the software side of things a new Pro mode allows for manual control over shutter speed and other essential shooting parameters.

Like all recent Moto devices, the Moto G Plus comes with a ‘pure’ version of Android 6.0, without any manufacturer-specific add-ons, to keep things as responsive and smooth as possible. Google Photos is the default photos app and includes two years of free storage at original image quality for Moto G buyers.

The OS and other software is powered by a 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 chipset with octa-core CPU and 550 MHz Adreno 405 GPU. There are 2GB of RAM and microSD-expandable storage options ranging from 16 to 64GB. Images can be viewed and composed on a 5.5-inch 1080p display that is covered with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for protection.

The 3000 mAh battery features Motorola’s TurboPower charging which can provide approximately 6 hours worth of power in 15 minutes of charging. A fingerprint reader at the front increases security and provides a convenient way of unlocking the device. The Lenovo Moto G Plus has first been launched in India where it will be exclusive to Amazon.in and start at approximately $ 200 for the base 16GB version. Pricing for other regions has not been revealed yet. With the Moto G Plus Lenovo has also launched the 4th generation of the standard Moto G model which comes with identical processor specifications but has to make do without the fingerprint reader and, with a 13MP Sony IMX214 image sensor, offers a very similar camera specification to last year’s Moto G.

Key specifications:

  • Omnivsion OV16860 1/2.4-inch 16MP sensor
  • F2.0 aperture
  • On-sensor phase detection and laser-assisted AF
  • 1080p video
  • 520p slow-motion video
  • Dual-LED flash
  • Manual control over shutter speed
  • 5MP / F2.2 front camera
  • Android 6.0
  • 5.5-inch 1080p display (401 ppi)
  • 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 chipset with octa-core CPU
  • 2GB RAM / 16, 32 or 64GB storage
  • MicroSD support up to 128GB
  • 3000 mAh battery with quick charging
  • Fingerprint reader

Leica M9 falls from balcony onto granite, granite comes off worse

20 Aug

Leica has a reputation for making pretty rugged cameras, going back more than 100 years. But nobody would expect a rangefinder to survive a fall from a balcony, onto granite tiles. However, if a recent post on Chinese social network Sina Weibo is to be believed, that’s exactly what happened to a Leica M9 recently, and somehow it survived the experience.
