  • Weekly Photography Challenge – Dance

Earlier I shared a bunch of elegant images of the world of dance.

Dance is an art form just like photography. It take discipline and endurance to be a dancer. Can you relate as a photographer? Each is a passion, something which needs practice to perfect. Dance is picturesque and often is partnered with photography as the are symbiotic – they work well together.

Now it’s your turn. Do you know a dancer? Can you approach the local dance school to offer to take some photos for them? Maybe even something less formal like your own children dancing just for the fun of it?

    • photos of people actually playing an instrument
    • a rock concert
    • a marching band or parade
    • music CD, DVDs or old-time LPs

Weekly photography challenge – spare time

This week for your photography challenge I urge you to think about what ELSE you do in your spare time. Do you read, cook, go bowling, ride a motorcycle, play sports, draw, or walk your dog? How do you spend your free time? What sorts of recreational activities do you participate in?

Next go photograph some of these things. You could do a self-portrait or other people doing the things you enjoy doing as well. Such as:

  • Weekly Photography Challenge – New

Earlier I shared some images of different ways you might have rung in the New Year. As is it now 2015 and we’re embarking on a new year, we will stay with that theme for this week’s photography challenge.

    Weekly Photography Challenge – New

Your challenge is to convey the idea of new. That could look a number of different ways including:

    • A newborn baby
    • New objects like a shiny new car
    • A fresh new snowfall
    • New goals for 2015
    • New ideas
    • And many more others I haven’t even thought of . . .

So how will you convey an idea or concept? It might be literal or more subtle. Show me how you tell the story of NEW.

  • Weekly Photography Challenge – Festive Food

Well it’s that time of the year again. We spend days cooking and preparing for the big feast, then we stuff ourselves and retire to the sofa. Yup it’s holiday time.

Whichever religion or faith you practice, and wherever you live – there is likely some sort of festivities going on this month. I’m spending the holidays in Nicaragua so it will be very different that back home in Canada with my family. I’m sure we’ll have a big meal but it may not be the traditional turkey with all the trimmings – it could look like grilled meat of some kind with rice and beans.

  • Weekly Photography Challenge – Graffiti Street Art

In an earlier post I shared a set of some images of street art, also often referred to as graffiti.

If you live an urban area or any city, than likely you have some of this type of art nearby. Graffiti artists range from ones who just seems to do vandalism, to other who are highly talented and skilled artists.

Your job in this week’s photograph challenge is to seek out some street art in your area and photograph it in a manner fitting for the artwork. That could mean some grungy post-processing, a funky filter over the lens, or whatever creative idea you can come up with.

Let’s see a few more examples of graffiti street art:

  • Weekly Photography Challenge What Winter Means to You

Earlier I shared a set of frosty images to get you in the wintery mood.

Now it’s the time for the weekly photography challenge, so it’s your turn to get out and shoot winter. Since winter means different things and looks different depending on where in the world you live – this challenge is about winter and what it means to you.

If you’re in the northern hemisphere that might mean:

    • Snow
    • Ice
    • Frost
    • Fog
    • Winter sports
    • Frozen things
    • Cold

    • Using a colored filter on your lens

It’s your turn to get shooting, show me your blue or cool images.

  • Weekly Photography Challenge Bird’s Eye View

Earlier I shared a collection of photos shot from above using a bird’s eye view. In the photography challenge last week you were assigned to photograph from a worm’s eye view or low down. This week you will be looking down, using the bird’s eye view to create your images.

    Bird’s eye view

Bird’s are usually flying overhead or sitting up high on a wire looking down on us. So try something to get that kind of perspective in your image this week. Get up high and look down. That could mean:

    • Climb to a roof or the top of a hill and look down
    • Stand on a chair to photograph something on the floor
    • Just simply being aware of what is below your eye level and shoot that
    • If you really want to go for it take a hot air balloon, fly a quadcopter or GoPro, or even take a gondola ride

You get the idea right? Get up – and look down!

Share your bird’s eye view images here:

Simply upload your shot into the comment field (look for the little camera icon in the Disqus comments section) and they’ll get embedded for us all to see or if you’d prefer upload them to your favourite photo sharing site and leave the link to them. • Weekly Photography Challenge Worm’s Eye View

This week I rounded up a bunch of images taken low to the ground, otherwise known as worm’s eye view. It’s not a common view that people see, so images you create shot from this angle have a unique look and pique interest with viewers. Your job is to take on this low down task and shoot from the ground level. Here are some examples for you:

    Stephan Rebernik

    AJ Mangoba

    By AJ Mangoba

There’s no special equipment needed to do this, or magical subject matter. Even the most ordinary objects can be made to look interesting when photographed from the worm’s eye view. So it’s your turn.

Weekly photography challenge – worm’s eye view

So get down on your hands and knees, don’t be afraid to get dirty, and get as low to the ground as you can (and still be able to get up again). You might find things down there you haven’t noticed before, perhaps even in your own home or back yard. Like macro photography that makes you look for tiny subjects, getting down on the ground has a similar benefit and you start to see things you’d otherwise miss. Give it a try.

Share your worm’s eye view images here:

Simply upload your shot into the comment field (look for the little camera icon in the Disqus comments section) and they’ll get embedded for us all to see or if you’d prefer upload them to your favourite photo sharing site and leave the link to them.
