Weekly Photography Challenge – Flowers

20 Aug

Earlier today I shared a bunch of flower photos to brighten your day. I can’t think of anyone who doesn’t like flowers, even the roughest toughest guys can appreciate nature’s beauty and splendour.

By Michael J. Moeller

The weekly photography challenge is flowers.

Now of course it’s your turn. Go find some flowers and photograph them. Go for a walk, find some wild flowers, or visit a garden. You could even think outside the box and make paper flowers or draw some on the sidewalk in chalk. Perhaps you could set up your tripod and do some macro shots and wait for a bee or bug to come along. Try some creative depth of field using a large aperture, or some multiple exposures.

The key of course is using light to your advantage. Show the flower off by backlighting it with gentle evening light. Or use side lighting to pick up extra texture. You’re only limited by your imagination.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Blue

16 Aug

Earlier I rounded up a set of blue images to inspire you. And as you may have guessed it’s that time again – the weekly challenge.

I was feeling a little blue this week myself after hearing about the passing of Robin Williams. Sad that someone who brought so much joy to so many, had so little in his own life. But I don’t want you to be that kind of blue!

Weekly photography challenge – blue

This week I want you to get out and notice anything and everything around you that is blue. Then – photograph it and share it with us here. Nature provides lots of things that are blue for you, try there and also look for man made things too like bicycles, cars, homes, you name it. Here are a few more ideas for you:

Weekly Photography Challenge – All Things Green

09 Aug

Earlier I posted a set of photos with a green theme.

It’s summer in the northern hemisphere and with summer comes lots of green. Green grass, trees, all over nature we see green. It happens to be my favorite color so it makes me happy.

This week I want to see your Green photos. Look around in your world, what do you see that’s green? How many shades can you find? Natural things and man-made. Big and little things. Show us your green!

Weekly photography challenge this week is – all things green!

Here are a few more images of green to get you started:

So what does that mean to you? What do you imagine in your head at the mention of the word? Do you take it literally and think of the color gold? How about an award or trophy? There’s so many ways to go with this – let’s see where you take it.

Earlier I selected and shared some photos of different beverages. There are many ways to photograph beverages and drinks including in the studio, in a restaurant, or outdoors on location.

Your photography challenge this week is to photograph a beverage or drink of your choice, in a way that makes it appealing to the viewer. Make us want to taste that drink. Make us thirsty!

Weekly Photography Challenge Things at the Beach

12 Jul

Earlier today I shared a bunch of jaw-dropping images of beaches. As you may have guessed, this week’s photography challenge is one in the same.

Even if you aren’t near the ocean you can get out and find a body of water somewhere near you – perhaps a lake, pond, stream or even the reflecting pool at your local town hall. The idea is to get out and photograph the stuff near the water including:

  • the beach and the sand
  • pathways
  • reflections
  • clouds and sky
  • rocks
  • silhouettes of people against the sun or sunset
  • marine life in tidal pools
  • the local flora or vegetation
  • go wide, and go closer and do some macro photography

You get the idea. Need some more examples?

Weekly Photography Challenge Reflections

05 Jul

Earlier I rounded up a set of reflection images. Now it’s your turn!

This week’s photography challenge is reflections

Reflections are great for learning to train the eye to see photographically. Start looking for them everywhere, in windows, doors, car panels, wet pavement, puddles, ponds, or icy surfaces. Rules of composition still apply to make a strong image, as does lighting.

Here’s a few more examples to get you started on the photography challenge:
