  • Weekly Photography Challenge – Street Photography

In this previous post I shared a bunch of street photography images. But not just any old random ones. They are images that were taken all around the world, but yet still have a common thread, a connection. They included:

    • Photographers shooting other photographers
    • Subways, taxis and transportation
    • Markets and vendors
    • And buskers or street musicians

Weekly Photography Challenge – Street Photography

Now the challenge is over to you. Go do some street photography, and if you want to take the challenge up a notch then try to work with the themes mentioned above. See if you can add to the body of work in those categories and let’s see how far and wide dPS readers reach. When you post you photo please tell us where it was taken.

  • The Cheap Camera Challenge – It’s Not All About the Camera

In my own classes, workshops and tours I tell my students that it is not the camera that makes good photos it’s the photographer. This video series by DigitalRev TV takes that statement to the next level with their Pro Photographer, Cheap Camera Challenge.

In this instalment street photographer Gary Tyson is given a cheap camera in a wristwatch. See how he uses it to make some pretty decent photos, interacts with people and uses it to his advantage rather than it being a disadvantage.

What can you learn from that video? What is the lesson there?

Sure maybe the photos are high resolution and won’t stand up to anything other than being on the internet. But take those same techniques and apply them using whatever camera you do have.

Are you up to taking the cheap camera challenge? I might give it a go myself!

  • Weekly Photography Challenge – Still Life

In this set of images I rounded up some imaginative images of objects, non-living things. Things don’t always have to appear as they really are in photos. Light, the right lens selection and angle of view can create an image of an everyday, seemingly ordinary object, and make it look interesting.

    ~lzee~by~the~Sea~is~not~really~all~here~

    By ~lzee~by~the~Sea~is~not~really~all~here~

So your goal this week is to find some inanimate objects to photograph – in an interesting way. Use your imagination and creativity. How can you bring this ordinary thing to life? What camera settings or techniques can you use? What is the best lighting? You can use natural light, or flash, it’s up to you.

Look around your house, see what you can find just sitting around that might make a good subject. Don’t be afraid to place it where you want, or even take it outside on location. Use a reflector to add light, or add off-camera flash for more dynamic lighting. The possibilities are unlimited and your subject has all the patience in the world – so experiment and have fun with it.

  • Weekly Photography Challenge – Get Buggy With It

Editor’s Note: This is part a series on macro photography this week. Look for a new one each day. The next newsletter will have them all if you miss any!

This week we’re focusing (pun intended) on one specialized area of photography, macro or close up photography. True macro photography means that you are close enough to reproduce the subject 1:1 or actual size on the camera sensor (or film). Usually that requires a special macro lens but there are other ways to do it – check out: 3 Ways to Try Macro Photography on a Budget for some ideas. See more examples of bug images here.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Bugs Close-up

Your challenge this week is to get buggy with it – go find some creepy crawlers, multi-legged creatures, flying nuisances and photograph them. Get as close as you can with the equipment you have, perhaps give reverse lens macro a try if you haven’t got extension tubes or a macro lens.

    Here are a few examples:

Roads and paths are easy to find – whether you live in the city in an urban area, or in the country – there are roads. A dirt track, a walkway, a sidewalk, or a highway – find a road or path and start shooting.

Use the lines of the road to create an interesting and powerful composition. Lead the viewer into the image and tell a story. Like this images:

  • Weekly Photography Challenge – Places of Worship

Today I rounded up some images of some special places. Some architectural wonders, many full of history – all special to the people who visit them. This is various places of worship.

    Neil Howard

    By Neil Howard

That could mean a number of different types of buildings and places including:

    • Small home town churches
    • Basilicas
    • Mosques
    • Synagogues
    • Temples
    • Wats
    • Even cemeteries

Weekly Photography Challenge – Places of Worship

In my quest for example images I found a lot of HDR images of interiors – many that were quite a bit over done, at least for my tastes. I even found some of my own images dating back to 2010 when I first started experimenting with HDR and they were making my eyes bleed – my own images! See this article on the stages of HDR photographers, see if you can relate.

So I redid a few from the Montreal Notre Dame Basilica, an amazing thing to see and photograph. I used the new Lightroom 6 (CC) Merge to HDR feature – see what you think.

    churches-dps717px-01

    churches-dps717px-02

    churches-dps717px-03

Just for comparison here are my old versions, my first attempts from 2010. Even pros and teachers make mistakes but we aren’t too big to admit them.

    Multiple image HDR

    churches-dps717px-05

“Ewww” right? I agree – let’s move on!

Okay here are some other good examples (in my opinion) of places of worship.

Now it’s your turn. Think outside the box to other places besides those listed about that might be considered for worship. A quiet outdoor coffee shop, how about sunrise on a deserted beach? What places do people go to find solice and think, or pray (if so inclined)?

Note: please be respectful of people inside places or worship. Those are NOT public areas and you do not have free rights to photograph them. By all means photograph the architecture if you’re allowed but always ask before taking someone’s photo inside.

A couple more ideas from my own image collection. Keep in mind you can do bits and pieces of places too, not just grand sweeping wide angle shots. How quiet is this shot of the candles? How meaningful is it though, and does it tell a story of the place?

  • Weekly Photography Challenge – Light Rays

Rays of light are that golden egg photographers dream about, lust after, desire with all their heart. Earlier I shared a set of images that display a great example of rays of light.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Rays of Light

So now it’s your turn to go out and replicate this type of photograph. You may think – that’s impossible how can I create that if it doesn’t already exist? Well there are some things you can do to help it along.

    • Look for a foggy day or condition
    • Go out to shoot in the early morning and look for mist that is laying low over the land with the sun coming through it
    • Find a dusty old dirt road and drive up and down it a few times, then get out and start shooting
    • Go to a historic site or museum and see if you can shoot inside some of the old musty buildings, look for light coming in the windows
    • Sheer curtains or blinds over a window can help too

So get out and look for the light. Here are a few more examples:
