Mary Street Alinder Group f.64 Book Signing at the Scott Nichols Gallery

This past weekend I had the pleasure of meeting Mary Street Alinder during her Group f.64 book signing at the Scott Nichols Gallery. If you’re unfamiliar with Mary Street Alinder she was an assistant to Ansel Adams also wrote Ansel Adams: A Biography. Her latest book chronicles the famous Group f.64 photography movement that included Ansel Adams, Imogen Cunningham, Dorothea Lange, Willard Van Dyke and Edward Weston. If you’re a fan of photography and the West Coast Photographic Movement then this book, which also contains 100 photographs by and of its members, should be high on your list to read and add to your photo book collection.

Variations on Normal: Book of Absurdly Brilliant Inventions

The work of Dominic Wilcox is a wonderful blend of out-of-the-box design inspiration that, finally, you can get shipped to your door (in a box, no less!).

Often intentionally impractical and definitively theoretical, the ideas found inside this 128-page book (as on his blog) are nonetheless extremely compelling. Presented as something between sketches and comics, they will challenge you to look at the world from fresh new angles, not to mention their pure entertainment value.

From mobile fences and motorized ladders to square peas and coffin workstations, there is always an element of functionality (hence design, not art) but also a playfulness to each piece.

About his inspiration: “I’ve convinced myself that within everything that surrounds us, there are hundreds of ideas and connections waiting to be found. We just need to look hard enough. Some of my ideas develop from observations on human behaviour and I express them through the objects I create. I also experiment with materials to try to find surprises that can’t be found simply by thinking with a pen or a computer.”

Wilcox lives in London but was educated at the Royal College of Art (Design Products MA) and the Edinburgh College of Art (Visual Communication BA). More about his book and other recent works can be found on his website.

Western Digital’s My Book Thunderbolt Duo, An Awesome Way to More Securely Store Your Photos

For the past month or so I’ve been testing out one of the 8TB Western Digital My Book Thunderbolt Duos and I have to say I dig it. Before trying this out, my entire storage setup was built around Drobos. I’ve got 2 Drobo 5Ds with 15TB each in them and a Drobo Mini.

I was interested to see what the performance would be like with Western Digital’s large storage solution and I have to say I’m a fan.

What I like about it:

1. It’s quiet. So quiet. My Drobos are not bad, but the Western Digital My Book Thunderbolt Duo is even quieter. You don’t even know it’s on or there, except for the tiny little pinhole light that is on in the front, and of course you see it on your Mac. For some reason one of my Drobo 5Ds feels like it almost goes to sleep sometimes. When I try to access it in the finder I have to wait a few seconds and I hear it powering up a bit. This doesn’t happen with the My Book Thunderbolt Duo.

2. Thunderbolt is sooooo fast. Whoever invented Thunderbolt should get a Nobel prize for speed. I can’t believe how quickly I can copy hundreds of gigabytes of photos around.

3. The Duo is a bit cheaper than the Drobo for those who may be on more of a budget and need less storage. To get 4TB of replicated storage on a Drobo 5D I’d have to buy about 6TB worth of drives. This would cost me about $ 800. You can buy an 8TB My Book Thunderbolt Duo for about $ 650 or so. You can mirror the drives so that you get two copies of everything or about 4TB of replicated storage. Because the Western Digital My Book Thunderbolt Duo doesn’t rely on a proprietary format for replication, if one drive fails, you would always have a perfect backup copy on the other. I haven’t had a problem with Drobo’s proprietary format before, but it’s something that some folks have criticized in the past.

4. Primary data is automatically backed up. I can’t use a backup strategy that requires my manual contribution. With both the Drobos and the My Book Thunderbolt Duo your primary versions of photos are more secure.

5. The Western Digital My Book Thunderbolt Duo is smaller than the Drobo 5D and much lighter.

Setting up the My Book Thunderbolt Duo was easy. It’s just plug and play. Similar to my Drobos.

I know a lot of people will probably comment on this post about how they are doing things even cheaper by building their own solution with their own replicated in home RAID servers, etc. That’s just great, but I’m not a very technical guy when it comes to computer hardware and I’d wayyyyy rather pay a little bit more and have a Thunderbolt solution that is just plug and play, without me having to do any work, or do any coding, or manually buying and installing drives into a server body and all that. Different strokes for different folks though and each person should do whatever works best for them.

There is also a 4TB and 6TB version of the My Book Thunderbolt Duo. You can learn more about them including all of the technical specs on Western Digital’s site here.

A HUGE disclaimer on any device like the Drobo or My Book Thunderbolt Duo. These solutions may protect you against hard drive failure, but they will not protect you against fire, theft, etc. For that reason you may also want to incorporate both offsite and/or cloud storage to whatever your backup strategy may be. I see replicated hard drives really only as a first line of defense. In my own case I also purchased a large fireproof gun safe and when I’m out of the house or on a trip or something I usually lock my drives up in there. I also have off site backup storage for my images and I’m actually working on a plan this year to begin moving my offsite storage into a bank security deposit vault.

The book next to the My Book Thunderbolt Duo by the way to compare size is the excellent expanded edition version of Robert Frank’s The Americans which was reissued a few years back and is *highly* recommended. One of the best photography books ever published. It’s one I go back to and revisit over and over again.

Exhibit & Book Not To Miss – Carleton Watkins: The Stanford Albums
“The Yosemite Valley from the ‘Best General View,’” 1866

There is a lot we take for granted about National Parks, in particular the likes of Yosemite National Park, which are steeped in history particularly in the realm of nature conservation. If you’re a fan of Yosemite you may already know this year is the 150th Anniversary of the Yosemite Act of 1864. This single piece of legislation put the wheels in motion for the eventual creation of our National Park system with the help of then U.S. President Abraham Lincoln.

What is particularly fascinating about this anniversary is that it may never have happened without Carleton Watkins photographing Yosemite in the early 1860′s with a camera capable of producing stereo views and another camera capable of holding 18×22 glass negatives. These 18×22 plates became known as the “mammoth plates”. Watkins had a rough ride of it as a professional photographer losing his studio in the great San Francisco earthquake of 1906, but some of his photographs survived. (3) three of his albums reside at the Stanford University Libraries and select photos from these albums are now on display through August 17th, 2014 at the Cantor Art Center. Even more notable for Yosemite fans worldwide is the release of these 3 albums via a large format photo book aptly titled the Carleton Watkins: The Stanford Albums. Remarkably this beautiful large format book, containing 280 pages, is only $ 40. I received my copy this past week and it’s amazing. I highly recommend it both for the beautiful photos, rich history, and fine quality of the book. Before there was Ansel Adams there was Carleton Watkins and his photos are a rare glimpse into Yosemite Valley’s past.

Side Notes

What did I find so amazing about the images in this book?
1. It reveals a view of San Francisco when it was still forming.
2. It shows Yosemite more barren and populated in a different fashion than we see today.
3. It shows how a single photographer first visualized wild landscapes setting the visual tone for future photographers to emulate for decades to come.

Book of Shadows: 2D Shape Cutouts Cast Silhouettes on Pages

A children’s book with an interactive twist, Motion Silhouette engages readers through pop-up pieces that require lighting to animate shadow pictures on each page.

The idea is to add elements of manual animation that are necessarily subjective – each person will hold, turn and highlight the cutouts in different ways.

Secondary readers or viewers (young kids watching over parents’ shoulders) will also have their own unique experience each time.

Motion Silhouette is actually a sequel to another book, simply titled Silhouette (excerpts shown above), a work which similarly uses slightly less-developed pop-up pages to create a more basic multi-dimensional experience.

From its Japanese creators, Megumi Kajiwara and Tathuhiko Nijima: “I will begin to talk about the story and illustrations shadow falls on top of the page overlap. In this work, you can enjoy the animation of shadow phantasmagoric by you move the light. Trees and become bigger and bigger, which aims to train a distant star. Story that changes depending on the page falling shadows, shadows move around the top of the page.”

Mini Book of Major Events: Whole World History in Your Hand

In a handful of pages in a book the size of a fingernail, this book artist tells a minimalist story of life on Earth, illustrating pivotal moments with brief text and tiny images.

A beautiful bit of hand-bound book art, The Mini Book of Major Events is just one of a series of micro-volumes made by Evan Lorzenzen, all of which pack large ideas into the smallest space possible.

Of course, selectivity is key – which events warrant mentioning when space is at a premium? Then, how does one illustrate these most effectively at such a minute scale?

Along similar lines, The Little Book of Big Ideas tackles large and important concepts from war and death to love and infinity, again with lovely drawings alongside each.
