Photo Term Series Post #20: Bokeh

31 Oct

One of the more interesting terms in photography is bokeh (pronounced bo-keh). Bokeh is the aesthetic quality of the blur in the out of focus portion of an image. The word is derived from the Japanese word boke meaning blur or haze.

Bokeh can be an important quality photographers evaluate when choosing a lens. This is particularly true when a photographer strives for non-distracting and smooth backgrounds. Nature, portrait and event photographers for example often make use of bokeh to isolate their subjects from busier backgrounds by choosing a smaller f/stop setting and thus a larger aperture. By choosing a smaller f/stop setting a photographer chooses to narrow the plane of focus and create a shallower depth of field. By having a shallower depth of field more of the photographed scene is then placed out of focus.

6 Tips for Stellar Bokeh Photography

16 Oct

The main difference between the camera and the your eye is focus. Your eye has a nearly unlimited depth of field, whereas a camera does not. It makes it practically impossible for a camera lens to truly capture what can be seen with the human eye. Instead of fighting this limitation, many photographers choose to embrace it, making a feature Continue Reading

After a couple of weeks without a Battle of the Bokeh, we’re back with some more bokehlicious action. In this episode, we’re comparing the bokeh quality of the recently reviewed Sigma 85mm f/1.4 (www.youtube.com which we thought was quite decent for the money with a Nikon 85mm f/1.4 D, a true classic portrait lens. Photoshopping Digital Bokeh Tutorial

21 Sep

In photography, bokeh is one of the most incredible implementations of Aperture. The shallow depth of field causes any light in the background to blur into a floating orb. In this tutorial, we go through how to create bokeh using Photoshop, with simply beautiful results. Bokeh is derived from the Japanese word Boke which means blur or haze. In the late 1990s though, when boke photography was becoming popular, the word was changed to bokeh to help us english speaking people say it properly. I honestly believe this is one of the greatest tutorials on PhotoGuides to date, partly because it shows you how to create such a beautiful image, but also because it opens peoples eyes to the power of the brushes engine, and this demonstration can expand peoples abilities on Photoshop enormously.
