Between the eerie glowing lights, the otherworldly cavernous spaces and the long strange trip it takes to get there, this subterranean museum feels like it could be located on an alien planet. The Salina Turda Salt Mines of Romania have been converted to the world’s largest salt mining museum, but this is no dry historical tour – there’s weird wooden architecture, a playground and even a ferris wheel.
All of the LED lights sticking out of those unusual architectural shapes at the center of the museum make it quite a sight from far above, when looking down into the mine plunging 120 meters (393 feet) into the earth. Visitors take elevators to each of the three museum chambers at various depths to see the restored equipment.
The sports arena, amphitheater, mini golf course and bowling lanes are reason enough to take a trip to the mine, but the caverns themselves are the main attraction. Uplighting shows off the amazing natural patterns on the excavated walls. There’s even a small subterranean lake with boats for rent.
The mines were first excavated in the 17th century and provided a vast wealth of salt for the Romans. The interior is totally free of allergens and almost entirely devoid of bacteria, and maintains a temperature of about 52 degrees with 80% humidity.
Japanese artist Motoi Yamamoto uses salt’s symoblic role in Japanese culture to create amazingly complex and emotional salt sculptures and drawings.

The LuLa team has been quite busy on a number of fronts. Michael as you have seen in our recent video has made his annual trek to Mexico with Chris. Seems though that Mexico has lost their internet somehwere. Based on headlines they have been loosing a number of things lately So, Michael and Chris have very spotty internet and hopefully will be back on line 100% very soon.

Sucht Ihr ein gutes und umfangreiches Bildbearbeitungsprogramm, in das man sich dennoch gut einarbeiten kann, dann empfehlen wir Euch ohne zu zögern Lightroom. Für ambitionierte Fotografen, die mit Ebenen arbeiten und Composings anfertigen möchten, ist jedoch Photoshop das ideale Program.

There’s a long tradition of high-quality compact cameras going back more than a hundred years, and even now, in the days of digital, there are some incredibly capable compact cameras on the market. Portraits alter Menschen sind im Netz sehr rar. Deswegen freue ich mich heute umso mehr, die Bilder von Gustav Eckart vorzustellen, dessen bevorzugtes Thema Menschen sind.
Durch ein Unglück im Freundeskreis aus dem Gleichgewicht geworfen, griff er 1985 zur Kamera, lief bei Wind und Wetter in den Wald und machte Naturaufnahmen. Seitdem ist die Fotografie ein wesentlicher Bestandteil seines Lebens.
Nach einem Orts- und Berufswechsel erfüllte er sich den Traum einer eigenen Dunkelkammer, in der er nun seine Bilder nach seinen Vorstellungen kontrollieren konnte.
Seinen Wunsch, neben dem „Brotberuf“ noch etwas Eigenes zu schaffen, erfüllte er sich mit der Fotografie. Freunde und deren Familien sind ihm im Leben am wichtigsten und so ist es nicht verwunderlich, dass genau jene ein bevorzugtes Thema auf seinen Bildern sind.
Ich versuche, Menschen so aufzunehmen, dass diejenigen, die sie kennen, sagen: Ja, genauso ist er oder sie. Das macht mich stolz.
Durch die Privatheit seiner Bilder kam er lange Zeit nicht auf den Gedanken, diese zu veröffentlichen bzw. im Netz zu zeigen. Es genügte ihm, sie zu verschenken oder gelegentlich auf einer Ausstellung zu zeigen.
Wichtig dabei war ihm allerdings das Kennenlernen anderer Fotografen und deren Wertschätzung sowie die Mitgliedschaft im Fotografie Forum Frankfurt.
Als seine Eltern in ein gewisses Alter kamen, teilte er sich mit seiner Schwester die wesentliche Betreuung, was bedeutete, fast jeden zweiten Freitagmorgen die Koffer in die Gepäckaufbewahrung zu geben und abends mit dem Zug von Frankfurt nach München zu fahren, und am Sonntagnachmittag wieder zurück. Mit dabei immer der Fotoapparat.
Hätte er seine Eltern nicht gemocht, wäre ihm das sicher schwer gefallen, „so aber war es gut und für alles, was ich gegeben habe, habe ich etwas zurückbekommen.“
Im Erdgeschoss des Elternhauses lebte auch seine unverheiratete Tante, die Ende 2006 hundertjährig verstarb.
Bei den alten Menschen auf seinen Bildern handelt es sich also um die nächsten Verwandten, deren Leben und Alltag er begleitete und mit deren Fotos er ein Zeugnis seiner Zeit anfertigte. Ob alltägliche Dinge wie die Essenszubereitung, beim Fernsehen oder geselliges Beisammensitzen.
Ende 2005 ist er der analogen Fotografie jedoch untreu geworden und wechselte ins Lager der Digitalfotografen, hauptsächlich aus Bequemlichkeit, so sagt er.
Manchmal greift er jedoch aus Nostalgie zu seinen alten Apparaten und nimmt einen analogen Film auf.
Ich möchte an dieser Stelle Gustav Eckart noch einmal danken, dass wir seine sehr persönlichen Bilder und auch einen Teil seiner Geschichte hier bei kwerfeldein veröffentlichen dürfen. It's been two years since I fell down the Fuji rabbit hole. It's been a wonderful (and public) experience, and I probably get asked more questions about Fuji than anything else.
So today we're taking a small side trip from lighting and heading into mirrorless. Apologies to the uninterested. I'l be back soon. But for those considering a foray into Fuji, I hope you'll find this helpful.
