There are three new articles being published here today; two reviews of the just announced Leica T, one by Michael and the other by Australian contributor Nick Rains. You can also read much more about the Leica T on our colleague Sean Reid’s subscription web site Reidreviews.

There is also the beginning today of a blog about Michael and Chris’ trip to Vancouver and China, to go on press for the printing of Michael’s two new books. In addition to daily reports, stills and videos, Chris will be shoting a documentary on book photo production, including interviews with Lenswork’s publisher Brooks Jensen, and the world famous designer of "Michael Reichmann – a 20 Year Photography Retrospective" – Arturo Chapa.

23 April, 2014 – Olympus OM-D EM1 and Fuji XT-1 Video Review

Mirrorless cameras are getting a lot of attention these days.  The new Fuji XT-1 and Olympus OM-D EM1 have redefined this format.  Both Kevin Raber and Michael Reichmann have adapted this format for much of their shooting.  We plan to do some more articles going over this format and using it on an everyday basis.  There will be some future articles on this soon.  In the mean time Luminous-Landscape made a video review on using both the Olympus and Fuji.

In a two-part video review, Kevin Raber (Luminous Landscape’s Publisher) takes a close look at the Olympus OM-D EM1 and the Fuji XT-1. These two mirrorless 16 megapixel cameras each offer very high image quality but differ radically in their design approach, features and intended user.

In Part One, Kevin details the features and functions of each camera.

In Part Two, the video follows Kevin on a field shoot in Zion National Park, Utah. He talks through his use of the cameras while shooting and demonstrates the cameras’ controls. He also offers some observations & advice while shooting.

21 April, 2014 – Panasonic GH4 Review

The Panasonic GH4 is a new micro four thirds system camera that is fully competitive in terms of features, functionality and image quality with anything currently on the market. It leaves little undelivered for stills work. If a 16MP image size is adequate for your shooting (and it is for mine), then you’ll likely find the GH4 a very practical and enjoyable stills camera.

When it comes to video, the GH4 is in a class of its own. There is nothing currently on the market, or even announced from any manufacturer, that can trump the GH4 when it comes to video in a DSLR / CSC form factor. This is the only camera of its type that can shoot 4K to an internal card, and which also features variable frame rates in HD mode.

18 April, 2014 – Why Photography Projects Are Important

When leading workshops I have a topic I like to cover called “Now That You Got It What Do You Do With It”.  This refers to coming home from a workshops with a lot of good images and not really doing anything in particular with them.  On a workshop recently to Tuscany with Art Wolfe he and I were talking and he said you should have a topic or something you concentrate on while shooting and he referred to it as a project.  On that trip I focused on door knockers and the hanging laundry of Sienna.   Today we have come full circle and Alain Briot as part of his continuing series of essays focuses on the topic of projects. Alain’s Why Photography Projects Are Important is a great read and will be a benefit when going out on your next shoot.  I am now going to go back through some of my past work and look for a theme to develop as a few new projects.

This new article is about creating impressionistic images of subjects in motion. But before proceeding, a word of caution. These images were taken at a bull fight in Mexico. I am not a big fan of bull fighting, indeed I find them mostly unpleasant to watch. But, I accept that in some countries they are an established part of the culture and history. All of the images on this page are done in an impressionistic manner and deliberately none are gory. I have mainly focused on the horsemanship in this collection. If you are offended by the very thought of bull flighting, please do not go to this page, and also, whatever you do, don’t write to me with your complaints about it.

1 April, 2014 – Announcing A Unique Swedish Troll Workshop

Iceland, Antarctica, the Amazon, not to mention the National Parks in the U.S. and Canada are old hat. Everyone has been there, done that.

With this in mind, in cooperation with Swedish / Mexican photographer Lars Svenstrom we are expanding our workshop activities in 2015 to include Sweden. We will explore the deep woods on the slopes of the southern Scandia Mountains where bears, moose, wolves, wolverine and lynx roam. 

And if we are really fortunate, we hope to encounter and photograph the highly elusive target of this adventure – trolls.

28 March, 2014 – A Redux Critique Of Contemporary Camera Design

Luminous-Landscape has spent a lot of time lately looking at the camera industry and camera design.  While we were doing this Richard Sexton, well know fine art photographer shared with us an article he wrote – A Redux Critique Of Contemporary Camera Design.  Richard’s article goes quite in depth regarding his opinions of cameras and lenses today.  It’s a follow up article to the one he wrote in May, 2012.  

William Neill well know photographer and author for Outdoor Photographer has just posted an article Antarctica Dreams on the Outdoor Photographer web site.  William was an instructor on our recent trip to Antarctica.  He shares his experience of this trip in the article.
