If you buy a RED and make it your full time job you can rent it out, learn a lot, offer your services at a Camera Tech, get on sets, make good connections, and (conceivably) eventually make good movies. But it will be a full time commitment. A cheaper and more hobbyish way to go about it is to buy a Canon 7D or something comparable… these new DSLRs are taking pretty gorgeous vid w/35mm look… not RED/commercial quality… but maybe close enough for what you’re looking to do.

Thank you for the information. Its helps out a lot considering I’m unable to go to film school due to several reasons. The top reason not being able to afford the cost. But I still wish to make cinema grade films. I mean my every day cam just won’t cut it. So I need a camera that will have that 35mm quality. I’ll look into the cams you listed. Also any further info would be great. And again thank you for the info.

If your able too afford one..then Go ahead. THo I wouldnt reccomend if you buy a BIg expensive camera like that..you could aslo get the top of the ling Consumer cameras Canon XL H1S, or the popular canon XL2. Oh any Panasonic brand..you would Save thousands…U might as well get a range rover for the price of a REd or pantavision or high end studio cam..

Lots of old foagies are hating on the RED and it’s followers because it makes it easier to take amazing footage! Of course a good concept, writing, and acting are important when telling a story visually but it sure helps to have high resolution images to work with! nobody is saying that this camera will automatically make your films good, but it sure wont make it harder to make something that wows people!

Thanks for all the nice response. I’m not here to tell you that you will make great movies just by buying any piece of equipment. Those who have posted about this miss the point of the video, which is just to show how to set your back focus on the RED camera.

The RED has a unique back focus adjustable collar. You set the back focus of other HD cams that have such adjustment differently – usually on the zoom lens itself.

But for those of us in the camera department, this is very helpful.

Yes your right it is about story telling and film making technique not technology…

Thank you, finally. Someone else who isn’t so wowed by technology, but promotes technique.
Yes, as Robert Mckee says: a filmmakers job is a story, well told.
A lot of gawkers should focus on their abilities to move their audience.
A fancy camera is not going to help you.

Lots of digi-kiddies getting aroused by this camera, as it it’s going to make their projects better because of the resolution.
A good concept, writing, and acting will look better shot on Super8, then on a RED in the hands of the countless techie “hobbyest” types. This camera is pretty great for the price. But it’s certainly not going to enhance bad writing. Worry about your project first, then rent the highest quality you can get, film or digi, what does it matter?
