Light – is one of the most impotent aspects of photography. Every photographer should know how to see light and how to use it. In this lesson we will be talking about light and its characteristics. A lot of examples for better visualization and understanding. Music: Kevin MacLeod. (Licensed under Creative Commons “Attribution 3.0”)

The 55-210 would be better in terms of weight and is cheaper and would compliment the 18-55mm kit lens. If you want an all-rounder lens without having to change lenses and you intend to use it for video recording, the 18-200mm (silver) would be the better choice.

John, I have the same question as Tekmonkey782. Which one is better to have: 55-210 or 18-200 silver?

Hi, I considering purchasing the Sony nex-VG20 with the sony 18-200mm zoom lens but have 2 questions 1. How good is the sony 18-200mm lens, and 2. is the touch screen panel easy to use, & does it give you manual options as I’m not very fond of touch screens? I’ve always used CARL ZEIZZ lenses and they never dissapoint. Just need to know how good the sony lenses are and is their and equivalent 18-200mm lens in the CARL ZEIZZ range? Another thing I’m worried about is zoom facility on this camera

it’s so ugly when zoomed on such a small camera. I prefer using primes on a nex.

good review,
after trying the LE for a week, exchanged to the larger model and its much better for video

nice review John. Totally agree – the older silver version is much better – but it is a bit pricier and bulkier but worth it – but a good alternative at a lower price is the Tamron 18-200 E mount – at around $739 – not sure if it is true but I have heard that the Sony and Tamron lenses are really the same thing basically – they sure look the same – maybe you can confirm.
The Tamron is so similar to the Sony you are reviewing in this video as far as image quality and function.

Technically the older 18-200mm is better because it has active steady shot for video but the good thing about this lens is that its smaller and a bit lighter.

sorry john i actually mean the older version of this lens, the silver chunkier one

hi john, is it worth getting this lens for my nex5n for 600 or will the 55-210 do the basic job?

January 16, 2013 at 3:28 pm
Apparently its just a rebadged Tamron but it remains to be seen as I have not compared both of those lenses side by side.
I would say the HVL-F20AM would be a cheap little flash to trigger external flashes. I will be doing a review on that very soon. Hopefully this week.

Found that the Tamron was just as good so I got it – a bit cheaper to – and a bit narrower –
everything you said about the Sony lens is correct – so it is a bit pricy.
What is your take on a wireless trigger for the NEX 7 – I like to shoot with few flashes but do not have a Sony flash so happy with manual mode – do you recommend a particular trigger – also what about the little Sony external flash ?

Hi John. Would the telephoto/zoom of this lens design be suitable for video use? and would the optical Steadyshot work for video as well as for photos?

I’m not sure if 60g qualifies as a considerable or a sufficient reason to drop active steady shot… I would still go for the original version.
PS. Nice review, thanks!

I have listened to so many people on youtube about photography. BUT you are the only one that got through to me. I understood every point you made. Maybe it was the simplicity of details, the amount of time you took to explain or BOTH! Thank you so much. More videos please.
