Yes, it’s a pretty good portrait lens as long as you don’t get too close to the subject (makes their face bulgy). However, the 50mm 1.8G is more zoomed in and will give you a nicer focal length and shallower depth of field. For portraits I typically use the 50mm 1.8G and my 135mm f/2 DC.

Sort of. You will get lots of vignetting (dark corners). If you shoot at f/1.8 on an FX camera the vignetting will cover more of the frame, but it will be softer and not as edgy. As you stop the lens down the vignetting becomes sharper. So yes, you can actually get some great shots as long as you can deal with the vignetting which some people actually like.

I’m just wondering… can u use a DX lens on a full frame camera because if I upgrade to a full frame in the future, can I still use the 35?

The 35 is so wonderful on DX. You could bring it on a trip and never really need another lens; heck, it could be your only lens if you wanted. It’s a great focal length.

This was soooo helpful man. Im getting a D7000 this monday upgrading from a d3100 and i actually owned a 50mm but it was a AIS built for a film camera. Constantly had me backing up to take shots in tight places. So i thought maybe with a upgraded 50mm it will be sharp enough to take my mind off of backing up so much. Being told the 35mm would be just as good with smaller zoom helps me out

As far as I am aware, the Nikon D7000 is a still images professional and the video mode is just to please the person out there who wants to pose. Seriously, if you want a camera with excellent video mode, go and buy a Panasonic AG-HMC40.

@Laash101 i feel this space between simply semi pro and pro is smaller now. d7000 is perhaps all we all want. go to… freedslr dot com change dot with . and get a way to win completely new Nikon D7000

I like the fact that you show us the Canon vs Nikon videos. Very nice.

By any chance, do you know what Nikon (Nikkor) lens would be close to Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM ?

    NICE JOB. Thank you.

I think that you had more time to play with 60d and d7000 than the factory testers.

Please, can you tell us for a all-round camera what would you buy?

    Canon 60d or Nikon d7000?

    Thanks.

Of course this video is compressed. YouTube also compresses the videos…

That is actually a shutter speed of 1/48th of a second at a framerate of 24 frames per second.

24p has a specific purpose and that is to mimic the look of real film which is shot at the shutter speed of 24 frames per second. When you shoot at 30fps is a completely different look. If you are not trained to differentiate the two then you are not a professional filmmaker. A tv series like CSI:Miami, which is now shot with 24p video, has a completely different look of a daytime soap opera or a reality look. 24p looks great but is a totally different thing from 30p.

    @philippewuestenbergs
Exactly, there isn’t a camera or camcorder in this price class with 24p that’s so special about some DSLRs. With 24 fps and the depth of field you can create a cinematic look without a big budget!
Nearly every camera has 25 fps and in NTSC 30 fps…

they do have 30p at 720p.

    January 16, 2013 at 11:34 am

24fps no good for anything fast moving… 30 needed at least… and this is why the Canon 60D (as a videographers DSLR) outclasses this new Nikon with its 720p 60fps by a mile..!

If you want to shoot a film with cinematic look, 24p make sense.
