You need an AF-S lens and have the A/M switch to A. Whilst it is in A you can’t manually focus. While you are recording, it will automatically focus for you

really confused, how can I get my nikon d5100 to do this? autofocus without having to press the shutter?
hey i have a problem with my d5100 because it has a noise really and i don’t like the quality of my video …. what is the setting am i going to use?

It can’t autofocus with AF, you are right… The lens used is AF-S.. obviously..
kit basic is 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G nikkor AF-S VR lens… wich is not very good for filming as the 50mm f/1.8D
“Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor” is the basic Kit Objectiv right? Looks like a pretty good and cheap Objektiv!
