  • Samsung launches 1/3.4″ 20MP sensor for use in smartphone front cameras and tele modules

    Smartphone camera technology is moving faster than ever and in recent times we have seen two new developments on a variety of mid-range and high-end devices. More and more rear cameras come with secondary modules with longer focal lengths, usually a 2 or 3x zoom factor when compared to the primary shooter. At the front the latest trend are “hole punch” cameras that are pretty much hidden underneath the display and only peek through a tiny hole.

    Both these trends require small sensors to enable designers and engineers to maintain the slim form factors of current premium devices. Samsung has today launched its new ISOCELL Slim 3T2 20MP 1/3.4″ sensor which comes with a 0.8?m pixel pitch and is Samsung’s smallest 20MP sensor, making it ideal for such applications.

    ‘The ISOCELL Slim 3T2 is our smallest and most versatile 20Mp image sensor that helps mobile device manufacturers bring differentiated consumer value not only in camera performance but also in features including hardware design,” said Jinhyun Kwon, vice president of System LSI sensor marketing at Samsung Electronics. “As the demand for advanced imaging capabilities in mobile devices continue to grow, we will keep pushing the limits in image sensor technologies for richer user experiences.’

    In addition to tiny dimensions the new sensor offers, when used in front facing cameras, Samsung’s Tetracell technology, which merges four pixels to work as one for brighter exposures and less noise in low light conditions. Samsung claims Tetracell increases the color filter array’s light sensitivity to that of a 1.6?m-pixel image sensor at 5MP resolution.

    For applications in rear cameras, for example in a tele-module, the sensor uses an RGB color filter array instead of Tetracell. Samsung says the sensor’s small dimensions reduce the height of the tele-camera module by around seven percent when compared to the company’s current 1/3-inch 20MP imagers. Compared to the existing 13MP sensor with the same module height, the 3T2 offers, thanks to the higher pixel count, better performance when digital zoom is thrown into the mix.

    The Samsung ISOCELL Slim 3T2 is expected to be in mass production in the first quarter of this year.

  • DJI announces pricing, availability of Multilink accessory for DJI Inspire 2, Cendence controllers

    After first teasing it back in September 2018, DJI has officially announced the pricing and availability of Multilink for its Inspire 2 and Cendence controllers.

    The new Multilink accessory connects a single master remote with up to three additional controllers. This setup ‘allows slave networks to form a star network with the master controller as the hub, offering aerial filmmakers more options in camera control and in-flight monitoring,’ according to the press release.

    It features dual-band functionality for operating at 2.4GHz or 5.8GHz with the ability for the slave controllers to be up to 150m / 500ft away from the master controller. DJI claims the latency between the master and slave controllers is as low as 2.5ms and 3.7ms for the 5.8GHz and 2.4GHz bands, respectively.

    The Multilink accessory for Inspire 2 Cendence controllers is being sold on DJI’s online store for $ 99 a piece with the option to purchase a pack of three for $ 282, a savings of $ 15.

    About the Multilink

    The new DJI Multilink connects with the Inspire 2 and Cendence remote controllers to create a master-slave network with up to three additional slave controllers. The slave controllers connected to Multilink form a star network with the master controller as the main device. The slave controllers can wirelessly send commands to the aircraft through the master controller and receive images and video signals from the aircraft directly.

    With a dual-band operating frequency of 2.4 GHz or 5.8 GHz, the slave controllers can maintain a steady connection to the master controller at distances of up to 150m from each other, which allows for efficient filming even in the least ideal environments. The latency between the master controller and the slave controllers is as low as 2.5ms (5.8G) / 3.7ms (2.4G), allowing for a reliable live-feed of the aircraft’s camera to additional monitors.

  • Review: Sigma 60-600mm f/4.5 – 6.3 DG OS HSM for Wildlife Photography

    Out of the box I was impressed with the build quality and features (particularly the Arca Swiss foot) of this lens.

    In 2019, Sigma is bringing a new lens to their line up. The 60-600mm f/4.5 – 6.3 DG OS HSM (available for Nikon and Canon) offers flexibility and quality as a portrait and super telephoto lens. The lens, optimized for DLSR cameras (DG), features optical stabilization (OS) and Sigma’s Hyper Sonic Motor technology (HSM). This review focuses on the applications, strengths, and weaknesses for wildlife photography. In short, I found the image sharpness, build quality, and versatility of the lens to be good. The lens may not be suitable for a full professional looking for amazing bokeh of an f/4 or f/2.8, but many will find its flexibility and image quality to be more than satisfactory. For the nitty-gritty details read the rest of this article and view my final rating below.

    First impressions

    Out of the box, this lens has a great feel. At a little under 6 pounds (2.7kg), the weight lets you know the majority of its construction is from metal. The only pieces of plastic were the hood and lens cover. The weight is not surprising considering they have to pack in the elements to give you a 60-600mm focal length. I was surprised at how short the total length of the lens was considering its impressive ability to have a 10x optical zoom.

    Build quality

    There are some features out of the box that I noticed and appreciated immediately. Aside from the plastic pinch-style lens cap, the lens came with a padded Velcro hood cover. It was a quick way to protect the camera’s front element and provide some padding while in the case. The foot of the lens had Arca Swiss mounts built in removing the need to purchase a 3rd party plate if you use Arca Swiss tripod mounts. The hood mounted to the camera with a sturdy set screw rather than a twisting-lock design like many lenses have. Last, all mounts were metal, and the front element was large with very nice looking glass.

    Image Quality

    In the lab

    To examine the sharpness of the lens I took a series of images at 60, 220, and 600 mm and throughout the range of apertures (wide open to closed) at each of the focal lengths. All images were taken from a tripod and in natural lighting. The images below are entirely unedited, and I have provided samples of a 2:1 crop at approximately the center edge of each image to examine sharpness. The captions of each image dive into my observations at each particular setting, but the trend was the same throughout the tests. Edges of images were soft up to about four f-stops over wide open. The lens had a predictable sweet spot between f/10 – f/16 where edge sharpness was excellent. Sharpness tapered off from f/16 to the maximum aperture.

    At 60mm and wide open (f/4.5) there was noticeable softness in the edge of the image.

    The sweet spot of the lens was at f/14 which provided sharp edges at 60mm.

    When set at the smallest aperture there was some softness in the edge, but not nearly as much as shooting wide-open.

    Set at wide open (f/5.6) and 220mm there was noticeable softness in the edges.

    While set at 220 mm and the smallest aperture (f/29) the edges were slightly soft, but not as soft as wide open.

    At 600mm f/6.3 there was noticeable softness in the edges.

    I brought the lens into the field to make wildlife images and test out some of its qualities. I shot all of these photos and found them to be sharp and well stabilized. Sharpness would only improve with the use of a tripod. I will use the images to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the lens.

    I began to appreciate the incredible versatility of the broad focal range in this lens while in the field. Zooming out to 60mm allowed me to shoot contextual shots and wildlife portraits without moving my feet. The images of these swans were taken back to back – one at 60mm and the other at 600mm. The group of swans was about 40yards (~40m) away. These images are uncropped and unedited and show how the lens is capable of contextual and portrait scenes.

    I was surprised by how close I was able to focus on a subject. At 600mm I was able to focus on subjects about 6 feet away. This was a huge, huge benefit for getting near-to full frame shots of small birds. The minimum focusing distance was noticeably shorter than other telephotos I have shot. The image of this small Black-capped Chickadee I shot at 500mm at a distance of about 7 feet. It is uncropped.

    As expected with a larger minimum f-stop (f/6.3 at 600mm) it was more difficult to get amazing bokeh and subject separation. To achieve the lens sweet spot it was necessary to shoot at an aperture between f/8 – f/14. Shooting at the sweet spot resulted in background elements being more noticeable. Even at 600mm and f/6.3, it was challenging to get subject separation. When photographing small birds, this often meant distracting sticks were left relatively in focus in the shot. Although I did not shoot in twilight conditions, it would be difficult to stop moving wildlife because of slow shutter speeds related to the minimum aperture.

    600mm is a great reach, but what if you want to go even further? I used the internal 2x (DX) crop of my Nikon D810 to double the focal length for some shots. Even though I was effectively shooting at 1,200mm handheld, the optical stabilization (OS) system in the lens allowed me to shoot clean and sharp shots. I did not test this lens with any telephoto converters.

    This timid Trumpeter Swan was shot using the DX crop built into my camera at an effective focal length of 1,200 mm. I was happy with the OS of the lens.

    Focus, accuracy, speed

    You may have noticed by now I was shooting in winter conditions while testing this lens. Even though temperatures were between 15-30F (-9 to -1degrees), the autofocus remained fast and quiet thanks to the HSM technology. I was impressed with the speed of the autofocus system in capturing moving birds.

    I relied on the fast autofocus of the lens to lock onto this passing flock of Trumpeter Swans. This image was taken at 280mm and is uncropped.

    Shots from the field

    Here are a series of shots that I made with the Sigma 60-600 during my trials. Although I’m not using these to illustrate a specific point, I think the portfolio below can help you make your own deductions on what this lens can achieve and whether it is a good fit for you.

    Pros and Cons

    Pros:

    • Good OS for shooting handheld
    • Incredible versatility from 60-600mm
    • Can replace a couple lenses in your kit for traveling efficiency
    • Excellent build quality and Arca Swiss plate as a default

    Cons:

    • Sacrifice bokeh due to relatively large minimum f-stops
    • Edge sharpness is pretty soft at open apertures
    • It is heavy for its size and relative to comparable lenses

    The bottom line, final rating and product value

    Overall I was impressed with this lens for its versatility. I think there is a lot of appeal in having one lens that can “do it all”. However, fully professional photographers may shy away from the lens because of its minimum aperture and resulting depth of field. This lens sells for US$ 1,999 dollars. This value delivers a very nice lens with good capability. My overall rating: 8.5 out of 10.

  • EIZO releases ColorNavigator 7 calibration software for high-end monitors

    High-end display company EIZO has released ColorNavigator 7, the latest version of its calibration software for the ColorEdge series of LCD monitors. ColorNavigator 7 brings a number of features designed for graphics professionals who need consistent, accurate image quality for print, video, and other visual projects.

    ColorNavigator 7 supports scheduled monitor recalibrations and maintains the calibration settings across multiple PCs by saving the info to the monitor itself. In addition to the scheduled automatic calibration, select EIZO monitor owners can use ColorNavigator 7 to manually adjust grayscale balance and hue/saturation across all primary and secondary colors.

    Other features in the update include a color mode populated based on the display’s OSD menu, plus Film Emulation with 3D LUT to match a film look on the monitor. ColorNavigator 7 supports Windows 7 and higher, macOS 10.11 and higher, and Red Hat Enterprise 7 64-bit.

  • Rare, original Marilyn Monroe contact sheet by Bert Stern appears on eBay for $195K

    A new eBay listing is offering a 76 x 99.7cm / 30 x 39.25in contact sheet created by commercial photographer Bert Stern that features a dozen images of Norma Jeane Mortenson, more widely known as Marilyn Monroe. The mounted photo worksheet, which is described as being in excellent condition, was acquired by the New York-based seller rarepics914 from ‘an artist friend.’

    The rare contact sheet features images captured during Stern’s ‘The Last Sitting’ portrait series, which was notably Monroe’s last photo shoot before she passed away due to a barbiturate overdose. Though the contact sheet shows some marks and minor wear from handling, it was kept safe for more than four decades in a storage facility, according to the seller, where it was protected from fading and damage.

    The contact sheet is currently listed for sale on eBay with a Buy It Now price of $ 195,000 USD. Interested potential buyers can also make an offer and request to arrange a private viewing with the seller. Seller rarepics914 has a 100% rating with 633 confirmed reviews.

  • News links on Google may lose thumbnail photos under EU Copyright Directive

    Google has given the public a preview of what Internet news results may look like if EU Copyright Directive Article 11 passes. Under this directive, news aggregators like Google and Bing would be required to pay non-waivable licensing fees in order to display image thumbnails and small text snippets from news articles.

    The European Parliament backed the controversial copyright directive in September 2018 following the rejection of an earlier version in July 2018. Under the directive, the EU seeks to make certain companies liable for infringement of copyrighted content uploaded onto their online platforms (Article 13), and to require news aggregators to pay for displaying anything more than a link to a news source (Article 11).

    The directive has proven divisive. Though proponents argue that the law could help protect copyright holders and traditional publishers, critics have expressed concerns over the directive’s potential effects on small publishers and the quality of search engine news aggregation results.

    In its most recent update on the matter, Google gave SearchEngineLand access to an experiment showing what news search results may look like if Article 11 passes — devoid of image thumbnails, article titles, and text previews.

    The image follows a blog post published by Google News Vice President Richard Gingras in December, who warned that under Article 11:

    … search engines, news aggregators, apps, and platforms would have to put commercial licences in place, and make decisions about which content to include on the basis of those licensing agreements and which to leave out.

    Effectively, companies like Google will be put in the position of picking winners and losers. Online services, some of which generate no revenue (for instance, Google News) would have to make choices about which publishers they’d do deals with. Presently, more than 80,000 news publishers around the world can show up in Google News, but Article 11 would sharply reduce that number.

    Though the licensing fees paid by Google and similar companies under Article 11 could potentially benefit content creators, that assumes the companies would be willing to pay the fees rather than alter their products.

    In late 2014, Google announced that it was closing down its Google News product in Spain after the country passed legislation that would have required it to pay publishers for displaying a preview of news articles. Google had called the requirement ‘unsustainable,’ stating that it doesn’t display ads on Google News and does not make revenue from that product.

    In 2015, following the loss of Google News, an analysis by NERA Consulting found that publishers in the country experienced an average traffic drop of 6%, with small publishers suffering the most at 14%. German publishers experienced similar issues in 2014.
