Just Posted: Our group test of waterproof, rugged compact cameras. It’s been two years since we last published a review of this class of cameras and a lot has happened in the meantime. Today’s crop of rugged compacts are better specified and more competitively-priced than ever and, while most still look distinctly utilitarian, some are positively stylish. We’ve subjected six current models to our usual studio and real-world testing, on both dry land, and underwater. Click the link below to find our what we thought, and which cameras prevailed.

A Quiet Snack
Sometimes I have trouble abiding silence, I want to fill it with words. I used to daydream, when I was younger, before teachers at school would shame me for it, over and over again… so now I talk, to feel comfortable. One of the bad things about our schools… they force people like me to conform or reject. I did both, simultaneously. But it was painful at times.
Kianna, and people like here, are slowly showing me that it’s ok to be quiet.
She’s reminding all of us about something we used to know. It’s important to daydream, maybe even more important than long division.

In this talk, Sebastian Sylwan from Weta Digital discusses digital film making and the historic tradition of art and science converging to allow better tools for storytelling. Today’s digital tools are not only helping to create more *convincing, believable imagery, they have enabled the birth of methods like previs and virtual production that are changing the entire collaborative creative process of film making. Sebastian Sylwan is the CTO of Weta Digital. Before Weta, Sebastian served as Autodesk’s Senior Film Industry Manager, where he helped set the strategy for Autodesk’s products in the global film market, including the first steps into stereoscopic 3D. Prior to that, Sylwan was Director of Technology at Digital Domain, an Academy Award-winning VFX facility. He successfully renewed Digital Domain’s technology infrastructure while maintaining the legacy value of over 13 years and helped it venture into new areas like the development of the facility’s first stereoscopic rendition of a CG animated film. Sylwan has also served as Principal Technology Advisor at USC’s Institute for Creative Technologies where he led the Light Stage 6 project. In Italy, where he grew up, Sylwan designed, built, and acted as the CTO of Lumiq Studios, the country’s largest production, post-production and 3D character animation studio. Just Posted: Although it retains its predecessor’s styling, the Olympus PEN E-P3 shares very little else with its forebears. There’s still a 12MP Four Thirds-sized sensor at its heart, but its autofocus, rear screen and movie capabilities have all been radically overhauled. Crucially, Olympus has also managed to squeeze a flash into the body. Now sitting at the top of a three-model range, the E-P3 is clearly positioned as a camera for enthusiasts. So, do its third-generation refinements and promises of world-beating AF performance make the E-P3 into the camera that the PEN series always promised to be?
