  • Alabama Hills Sunrise

    The Alabama Hills in the Owens Valley is quite a sight to see. Beyond the massive peaks and rock formations of the eastern Sierras, including Mount Whitney photographed below, it is the exquisite light that makes this area a photographers paradise. Galen Rowell made the Owens Valley his home and when I learned this as a young man I was left scratching my head wondering why. I had always driven through this area when I was young thinking nothing special of the landscape. It was only later when my eye became more trained that I realized how special this area is. The light here is like few other places and the geography is one of a kind.

    When ever I’m in the area I always stop over for the night to take in a sunrise. I’ll be doing that again this coming October on my way to Death Valley and based on my new workshop schedule I’ll be back in January and February of 2012. January will be a dedicated Alabama Hills trip and February will be a stop over on my way to Death Valley. If you have yet to see this stunning area definitely put it high on your list.

  • Learn from Big Shot

    bigshotIn keeping with the theme of learning, here’s an interesting program I hope expands in the future. Bigshot is currently only running workshops in the New York City area but it looks like they might reach other cities soon. The Bigshot workshops allow kids to build their own camera from a set of Bigshot click-together camera parts. The idea is to teach engineering and science concepts while building a working camera, which can then be used to teach photography.

    The program is run by Columbia University and, although you can’t buy the Bigshot camera parts, you can visit their website to learn how the different parts of a point and shoot camera work.

  • Steezy Marie and the Seven Courtly Jesters!

    Imagine the phone call for a second, it came in from the folks at Whitney Advertising. They were describing their idea… seriously, look at the finished ad and pretend you’ve never seen it, now describe it. That’s about how the phone call went.

    “Uhm. Say that again?” -I said slowly, with a heaping dose of incredulity.

    Honestly I wondered if this was actually possible to pull off, just the casting alone seemed, a bit too cinematic?  I don’t know.  They didn’t want any Photoshop inserts or anything silly, this is all real life, people (really cool people) dressed up like this standing there.  It seems too cool to be real… I don’t know, I was there.  We had witnesses.

    When the craziest of adventures are at the height of their mischief it’s always best to be the one holding the camera. That’s the rush we’re all chasing, professional or not.  That spot, that moment, the person that decides when to say, ‘click.’

    That’s why I do it.  That’s why you do it.  That’s why we all do it, we’re story tellers at heart and sometimes the universe provides you the opportunity to be part of a real life fairy tale.

    So ya, do I like what I do?  Sort of.  I guess.  ;)

    This is the results of the work of a huge team of talented creatives, executives, stylists, photography assistants, models, actors and… let’s not forget the caterer. Man that was good food. Thank you to MarkerUSA and Whitney Advertising for allowing me to be a part of their most crazy hatched plans.

    Make the annotating pen and virtual laser pointer appear in different colors while displaying a PowerPoint 2010 slide show.

    When displaying a slide show in Microsoft PowerPoint 2010, you can access a Pen tool from the right-click menu and draw / annotate on top of the current presentation. Also, by holding the CTRL key down and then using the left mouse button, you can activate a “laser pointer” to draw attention to certain points of a slide.
