Badwater Sunset, Death Valley National Park
It’s good to be back from Death Valley National Park. I was fortunate on many fronts while in Death Valley National Park. The members of my Racetrack photo tour were great, we had unbelievable light and incredibly clear skies to enjoy every star in the sky! Weather conditions were unseasonably cold with temperatures dipping down below 26F, but that didn’t slow us down.
Conditions at Badwater this trip were particularly nice with the salt flats recovering to their former glory. The hexagonal shapes of the salt were clearly seen and quite white. A nice change from my previous visit with very flat muddy grey salt formations.
I have many photos from this trip that I’m eager to share including some amazing night sky and star trail photos. Stay tuned for those! In the meantime here’s a sample of what we experienced on this trip. If you’re interested in joining me in February I’ll be repeating this trip to Death Valley to make the most of the new moon, so as to see every star in the sky – 2012 Death Valley Photo Tour Info.

Want your B/W’s to POP? [a Quick and Easy Tutorial]
The following quick tutorial is by Vincent Montalbano – one of our wonderful forum members – originally posted in our forum.
I just learned this and thought I’d share this simple procedure. This will also work on color photos, however, I really like what it does for black and whites. Here you go:
- use whatever process you prefer to convert your image to B/W (but do so while maintaining the color channels)
- open up the channels palette (that’s one of the tabs you’ll see on the top of your History palette)
- hold the control key (on PC’s, Mac may be Alt key??) and click on the RGB selection in the Channels palette. You will see the marching ants show up in your image
- make a new layer (Ctrl J) and click on Overlay (Softlight will also work with a little less intensity)… WOW!
- adjust your slider opacity to taste Flatten layer

Heinz Maier’s Insanely Beautiful Water Droplets
For those of you who like to tinker around with the art of water droplet photography, the bar has just been raised. Significantly.Using the hydraulic setup you see above, German photographer Heinz Maier captures the tiny slices of time in which multiple drops of falling water interact with each other.
The lighting tools, which are not shown here, are very simple: a small DIY cardboard softbox with two flashes (cutting the already fast t.1 times in half) some sample gels (complete with spindle holes, no less) and a lot of creative thinking.

Wo lasst Ihr Eure Fotos drucken?
Gerade eben erreichte mich wieder der Newsletter eines Fotodruck-Anbieters. Darin werde ich darauf aufmerksam gemacht, dass jetzt die Zeit beginnt, in der man doch Fotokalender drucken lassen kann, um sie sich an die eigene oder gar fremde Wände zu hängen. Ein nettes Fotogeschenk wäre das ja obendrein und ich werde aufgefordert, direkt einen zu er- und dann bestellen.
“Aha. Schön. Später vielleicht.”
Auch, wenn ich meine eigenen Präferenzen dahingehend habe, wo ich besonders gern bestelle, frage ich mich, wo denn unsere Leser Kalender, Fotobücher oder stinknormale Abzüge ihrer Fotos machen lassen. Zwar kenne ich schon eine Menge dieser Anbieter, doch die Neugier hat mich heute gepackt und ich dachte, da fragste einfach mal wieder nach.
Schließlich hat jeder so wie ich seine Präferenzen und Geheimtipps. Oder gerade zum ersten Mal einen neuen Anbieter getestet und ist grenzenlos begeistert von der Qualität und den Preisen. Dahingehend versuchen sich ja die vielen Services ständig zu unterbieten und für noch mehr Qualität noch weniger Kohle zu verlangen.
Aber stimmt das auch? Kommen die Fotos tatsächlich so an, wie oft lautstark angepriesen? Oder werden sie schlampig gedruckt, geschweige denn so, wie es versprochen wird? Ich hatte schon diverse Enttäuschungen vorliegen, die ich hier lieber nicht ausbreite. Da dreht es einem den Fotografenmagen sprichwörtlich um.
Somit bin ich mittlerweile nicht mehr ganz so erpicht darauf, die günstigsten Fotos zu bestellen, sondern durchaus bereit, für Qualität etwas tiefer in den Geldbeutel zu greifen. Denn was habe ich davon, für ein paar Cent Bilder zu bestellen und mich bei der Auspackzeremonie zu fragen, ob mir hier die Fotos von einem anderen Fotografen zugesandt wurden?
Ich gehe einfach davon aus, dass auch Ihr ein Auge auf die Qualität habt, aber trotzdem keine Lust, das ganze Monatsgehalt für ein paar Fotos auszugeben. Und weil Ihr mehr seid als wir in der Redaktion, frage ich Euch jetzt ganz direkt:
Wo lasst Ihr Eure Fotos drucken?
Bitte schreibt auch ein wenig über die Qualität der Bilder, über die Preise, den Bestellvorgang und ob Ihr grundsätzlich damit zufrieden seid. Ob Ihr erst ein Mal oder schon des Öfteren dort bestellt habt. Aus Erfahrung kann ich sagen, dass hier auch Einteiger mitlesen, die noch nie Fotos selbst bestellt haben und daher dankbar für Tipps sind.
